The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades. In this revolution, research has become central, it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.

Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers. The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present — and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.

As we peer into society’s future, we — you and I, and our government — must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.”

What Rex Ryan and so many other head coaches on all levels of football in America fail to understand is that you can be Helluva “Xs and Os” guy and still be a Complete Failure as a head coach and that the actual “Xs and Os” is about….

10% of goes into being a head football coach!

Something that a few of us here at Coaches Hot Seat learned from a legendary football coach over 30 years ago now is that…

A football team collectively plays at a level that roughly equals the confidence that the team as a whole and each player individually believes in their head coach.

What the Hell does that mean?

Well, on each play each individual player gives somewhere between 0 and 100 percent effort and the closer a team has…

100 percent of its players giving 100 percent effort on each and every play

…the more games and championship that team will win in any given season and of course the inverse is true as each player individually gives less and less effort which is often even in professional football tied to how much each player believes in the head coach the team will win less and less games and of course not win a championship.

We actually have an internal rating here at Coaches Hot Seat which is our guesstimate on how much effort a team is collectively giving during each week of the season which is just that a guesstimate after watching a team play and in 2014 our guesstimate on the level that the New York Jets collectively played for Rex Ryan ranged between….

10% and 40%

…and anything less than 75% on a regular game-by-game weekly basis and a team and their head coach will be heading for a .500 record or worse.

Since all of the above may be too complicated for Rex Ryan to understand maybe Paul “Bear” Bryant can help out Rex on this point and give Rex something to think about when he is out of coaching:

You see something that is lost on NFL owners and general managers is that the “fit” of a head coach to a team and city is just as important as it is in college football and if the Chicago Bears hired us tomorrow to hire a new head coach for the Bears we would be looking at coaches that matched as close as possible…

It is very easy for us to know what kind of head coach would be a good “fit” for the Chicago Bears because we have been visiting Chicago on business for 25-plus years now and when we think of Chicago we think of…

Tough Men and Women

….and certainly the word TOUGH comes to mind when thinking about the two “Perfect Fits” for head coaches of the Chicago Bears in the above list in George Halas and Mike Ditka.

Here’s a thought for the person or persons tasked with hiring the next head coach of the Chicago Bears:
