The Importance of Getting Ahead In Football Games in The Age of Scoring – Give These Hot Seat Coaches Hell Johnny Cash! – Post Week 6 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings

It is always amazing how fast the college football season moves but then life itself moves fast as one gets older and we are getting old here at Coaches Hot Seat as we enter the midseason of our 12 th year doing CHS so that makes this about the 160 th time we have written the Post Week “X” Coaches Hot Seat Rankings using the Great Johnny Cash and his Terrific Song Ring of Fire to roast the coaches on the Hot Seat but before we bring Johnny out a few words on the Age of Scoring in College Football we are now right in the middle of.

Last week we wrote about the Age of Scoring in today’s College Football which is changing the game completely as head coaches see scoring more points as way to both control a football game and to provide insurance if your team makes mistakes and thus has a cushion to fall back on. Former Texas Head Coach Darrel Royal once said about a pass that…

“Three things can happen on a pass play and two of them are bad.”

….meaning an interception of course and an incomplete pass which in Royal’s mind was a wasted play as opposed to a run that gained 4 yards.

Today many coaches would laugh at such a notion that an incomplete pass was a wasted play since that could easily be made-up on the next play, but now that is a coach that has a quarterback that can make plays and bounce back from mistakes which not every college football team has as we all see every Saturday.

What is now happening in college football is that teams are pressing to score points from the opening possession to get on the board first and have some control of the game and in the process are putting pressure on the other team which is an often missed point that many coaching and playing the game of football do not completely understand.

Decades ago a legendary football coach gave a Coaches Hot Seat member the following charge:

“I would like for you to study the reaction and mistakes made by a team that is down in a football game by one more or more scores. Does the team make more mistakes if they are down on the scoreboard from the start of the game or just in the second half or do they not make more mistakes at all in working to get back to even or head of the competition. Also study if there are any mitigating factors that a team might have that allows them on multiple occasions to come back from being down in games often. If it is found that teams behind on the scoreboard tend to press and make more mistakes identify by what factor they make mistakes and if coaches in general or particular coaches tend to make mistakes when their football team is behind in a game. Finally, determine the advantage that a team gains towards winning the game if they are often ahead in the first half, at halftime, and in the second half and if teams ahead a lot on the scoreboard are able to bounce back more effectively if they lose the lead after being ahead for much of the game.”

The report that was produced for the above requests several decades ago has been circulating at Coaches Hot Seat for about 6 weeks now since our Summer Party at Lake Tahoe and it has got to be one of the most interesting reads on football that any of us have ever encountered.

Overall it seems very clear from the report that a team that often gets ahead on the scoreboard not only tends to win a lot more games than teams that often do not score first or are able to stay within reach of the other team on the scoreboard, and teams that fall behind early to the opposing team…

Tend to make 2-times more mistakes in the first half when behind

AND

Tend to make 2 ½ to 3-times more mistakes in the second half when behind

Teams that get ahead of the competition early in football games not only are able to control the flow of the game and win more games than teams that fall behind, but when the team behind comes back to tie or go ahead the team that was ahead first and for most of the game seems much more resilient in coming back to win the game in the end.

Now the above finding could have something to do with that the team that gets ahead early and stays ahead on the scoreboard is a better team, but what seems very clear from reading this report is that….

Teams that are often ahead on the scoreboard are overall more confident football teams than teams usually playing from behind.

There are some other fascinating findings in this study that are way too deep to get into in this spot, but one of the charges for the study was to see if there were any mitigating factors that often changed the fortunes of teams that routinely fell behind on the scoreboard but would often also comeback to win the game and the mitigating factor in that case was those teams….

Tended to have a great quarterback and a strong player on defense with one and often both of those players being great leaders on and off the field.

The Bottom-Line Point from this report is that it is vitally important for football teams to…

Get Ahead Early and Keep Scoring Points in football games because teams that routinely play ahead of their opposition on the scoreboard into the mid 3 rd quarter tend to win a Helluva lot of football games!

Of course, every football coach knows all of the above, but what makes this report very relative to the current Age of Scoring that College Football is now living in is that many coaches have embraced the idea of scoring lots of points early to both get ahead and subdue the competition, but also to provide a backstop of sorts of extra points if the team plays bad as the game wears on.

Scoring lots of points is now an insurance policy and college football coaches today are throwing out the ideas of Rockne, Leahy, Bryant, Hayes and other legends of the game who wanted to “control the game” by getting a small lead and hanging onto it which is now just…

Total Horseshit

…which will only get coaches asses onto the Hot Seat and their teams beat!

Get Ahead Early and Score As Many Points As Possible = How You Win Lots of Football Games!

Let’s get to the Post Week 6 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings and if you would please Mr. Cash give these Hot Seat Coaches Hell!

Thank You Johnny!

Post Week 6 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings

1.  David Beaty, Kansas – Kansas played Top 10 West Virginia pretty well on Saturday but in David Beaty’s 42 nd football game at KU it was still another loss which now leaves Beaty’s records in 4 years on the job at….

Overall:  5 – 37

Big 12:  1 – 29

….which isn’t good in River City or any Damn city we know of and the Jayhawks still have to play in 2018:

At Texas Tech
TCU
Iowa State
At Kansas State
At Oklahoma
Texas

We would bet that Kansas gets one more win to finish at 3 – 9 which would be…

6 Wins in 4 Years

…for David Beaty at Kansas and there’s just No Damn Way Beaty survives that kind of record.

2.  Chris Ash, Rutgers – Reading the USA Today Coaches Salaries report this past week we could not help but laugh to learn that Rutgers head coach Chris Ash has a….

$10.35 Million Dollars Buyout

…as of December 1, 2018 and let’s take a look at what that Massively Stupid Contract that Chris Ash has gotten Rutgers exactly with Ash’s win/loss records in 3 seasons at the school:

Overall:  7 – 23

Big Ten:  3 – 19

That’s 7 wins in 3 seasons and the last head football coach at Rutgers was Kyle Flood who won….

18 Football Games

…in 3 seasons before getting fired and anyone with a working brain that has watched Rutgers play the last 3 seasons can see that the football team has gone BACKWARDS from the Flood years which weren’t all that great!

Let’s see what the 1 – 5 Scarlet Knights have left to play in 2018….

At Maryland
Northwestern
At Wisconsin
Michigan
Penn State
At Michigan State

We don’t see Rutgers winning another game this season because if you can’t beat Illinois at home…

Which has won 8 games the last 3 seasons now….1 more than Rutgers….under Lovie Smith!

…then how in the Hell exactly you going to beat any of those teams left on the Rutgers schedule?

You Are Not is the answer to that question!

What was the former AD at Florida Jeremy Foley’s thought on firing someone…

“Anything that will have to be done eventually should be done immediately.”

Yep!

3.  Randy Edsall, UConn – UConn has played 5 FBS teams in 2018 and lost to every single one of them but take a look at the scores of those games….

UCF – 56 – 17
Boise State – 62 – 7
Syracuse – 51 – 21
Cincinnati – 49 – 7
Memphis – 55 – 14

Oh….UConn did beat FCS Rhode Island and the score of that game…

56 – 49!

UConn is giving up an average of….wait for it….

53.67 Points Per Game!

In his second stint at UConn which is the last 2 seasons Randy Edsall is now sitting on records of…

Overall:  4 – 13

AAC:  2 – 8

…and the Huskies still have to play in 2018:

At South Florida
UMass
At Tulsa
SMU
At East Carolina
Temple

Maybe UConn can beat UMass but we don’t see them winning more than 2 games at the most and we cannot help but wonder….

What exactly is the point here?

There is no point!

4.  Larry Fedora, North Carolina – North Carolina had a bye-week in Week 6 but it’s back to football in Week 7 for the 1 – 3 Tar Heels with a home game against…

Virginia Tech

…followed by the below games that are left on UNC’s schedule:

At Syracuse
At Virginia
Georgia Tech
At Duke
Western Carolina
NC State

What does North Carolina end up with in 2018….

2 – 9 or 3 – 8?

Probably…and Larry Fedora’s buyout on December 1, 2018 =

$12.2 Million Dollars!

Absolutely Freaking Hilarious!

5.  Brent Brennan, San Jose State – San Jose State played a pretty average Colorado State team tough for awhile before losing 42 – 30 to drop to 0 – 5 on the season which takes head coach Brent Brennan’s records with the Spartans to…

Overall:  2 – 16

MWC:  1 – 10

….which isn’t so good especially when one considers the last head coach at SJSU, Ron Caragher, put up records in 4 seasons at the school of…

Overall:  19 – 30

MWC:  14 – 18

The San Jose State football program is stagnant at best and going backwards in reality and that’s a problem that head coach Brent Brennan better Damn fix and do it in a Helluva hurry!

6.  Bobby Petrino, Louisville – What you are watching at Louisville is a football program coming apart at the seams in the wake of the entire Louisville athletic department coming apart at the seams in the last couple of years after it was built in our humble opinion on a pile of Bullshit and we fully expect the Cardinals program to continue to explode downwards and…

$14 Million Dollar Buyout

…or not save some kind of Come To Jesus moment soon there is nothing that will save Louisville from looking for a new head football coach come December….that is if the folks at Louisville actually want real breathing human beings at their football games next season!

Looking at what Louisville has left on their schedule in 2018…

At Boston College
Wake Forest
At Clemson
At Syracuse
NC State
Kentucky

….we don’t see the Cardinals winning another game this season and Kentucky…

Totally Damn Destroying Louisville in the last game

….and if you believe in The Good and Doing Things Right then you will be hoping that the Wildcats will put a whipping on Petrino that is at least as bad as the….

66 – 31

….beating that Georgia Tech just put on Louisville!

7.  Gus Malzahn, Auburn – With the loss to Mississippi State on Saturday Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is now…

2 – 4

…in his last 6 games against Power 5 Conference Schools and we could not help but laugh out loud when finding out that Gus has a…

$32 Million Dollars Buyout

…if fired this season which maybe that is what Gus is wishing before because in our humble opinion…

Gus Malzahn is No Longer Coaching the Auburn Football Team and he has just Flat-Out Quit!

Yep…that’s our humble opinion but then Gus wouldn’t be the first person to get his ass on Easy Street and just Flat-Out Quit with Tens of Millions of Dollars coming now whether he wins another game or not….not that we think Gus Malzahn gives 2 rips if Auburn ever wins another football game!

We don’t take that opinion lightly and a former US Military Intelligence Officer here at Coaches Hot Seat who watches SEC Football very closely and all of the coaches press conferences in the SEC every week has watched Gus Malzahn’s press conferences in 2018 and the words he uses to describe Malzahn is…

“Total Indifference to his job as head football coach at Auburn.”

The now 4 – 2 Auburn Tigers have a Helluva Mess on their hands in a lot of ways we are choosing to not write about in this spot that are Auburn friends are passing along to us have left on their 2018 schedule….

Tennessee
At Ole Miss
Texas A&M
At Georgia
Liberty
At Alabama

Auburn could sleepwalk through the game and beat Liberty…right?….and they have 3 or 4 more times talent than Tennessee so that should be an easy win at home…but can Auburn beat Ole Miss, A&M, Georgia and Alabama?

Our guess is that Auburn wins 3 more games to finish at…

7 – 5 in 2018

…which ANY Damn Stumblebum falling off a train rolling through Auburn before the season and taking over this talent-filled Auburn team could have won and for a Helluva Lot Less than the…

$6.7 Million Dollars

…that Auburn is paying Gus Malzahn this season who again in our humble opinion…

Has Flat-Out Quit on his Football Team!

8.  Clay Helton, USC – Clay Helton must have been quite interested in watching Colorado beat Arizona State on Saturday with the undefeated Buffs headed to the LA Coliseum for a game next Saturday night in a game that Clay Helton and the Trojans cannot afford to lose if they hope to save this season from a Total Disaster!

The 3 – 2 Trojans have left in 2018….

Colorado
At Utah
Arizona State
At Oregon State
California
At UCLA
Notre Dame

…and we only see 2 sure-fire wins on there….Oregon State and UCLA….and the Trojans could lose both of those games easily so YES beating Colorado would be HUGE and we fully expect to see after a bye week to USC to come out and play…

Hard and Disciplined Football

….because a loss and dropping to 3 – 3 with what’s left….Not Good….Not Good At All for Clay Helton!

9.  Chip Kelly, UCLA – They had the Washington – UCLA game on the big screen at Stanford Stadium before the Utah – Stanford game on Saturday night….

With the Stanford loss to Utah being nothing short of a Total Freaking Disaster for the Cardinal in Oh So Damn Many Ways!

…and the Bruins were certainly playing hard and the offense looked like it took another step-forward but UCLA has to get a win sometime this season…right?

Maybe….here’s what 0 – 5 UCLA has left in 2018:

At California
Arizona
Utah
At Oregon
At Arizona State
USC
Stanford

UCLA might get 2 wins in 2018….just maybe!

Maybe we will come see your team play Cal in Berkeley Chip….give those Bears Hell Son!

10.  Kalani Sitake, BYU – The last thing that BYU head coach Kalani Sitake needed was to get blown-out by Utah State at home but that’s exactly what happened on Saturday losing 45 – 20 in a game that wasn’t even that close.

The 3 – 3 Cougars are now in a world of hurt because of what they have left on their schedule in 2018….

Hawaii
Northern Illinois
At Boise State
At UMass
New Mexico State
At Utah

…and what Sitake needs to do is find 3 wins in those last 6 games because less than 6 wins in 2018 after 4 – 9 last season would be a bad look…a Very Bad Look!
