Our guess: Georgia State finishes at 2 – 10 in 2015 and the Panthers are looking for a new head football coach come December and Hell we would be interested in a job coaching an FBS program in Atlanta, Georgia and we know a few very good head coaches a level or two below the FBS level that would be interested in that job as well!

Keep coaching them up Trent….just keep coaching them up son!

12. Paul Rhoads, Iowa State – You have to give Paul Rhoads and his Iowa State football team credit for continuing to play hard and beating a decent and much more talented if not admittedly arrogant Texas football team that is full of more Prima Donnas than we could possibly count BUT the win over the Longhorns doesn’t change Rhoads’ records by much in SEVEN seasons coaching the Cyclones:

Overall: 32 – 51

Big 12: 16 – 41

Even worse is Paul Rhoads records at Iowa State over the past THREE seasons….

Overall: 8 – 24

Big 12: 4 – 19

…which points to a declining football program especially when benchmarked against the rest of the Big 12 which is how Paul Rhoads is ultimately measured which is how we are all measured in this world today:

Not very Damn good over the past THREE seasons which brings us to another point if one goes back to the 2011 and 2012 seasons one will remember that was about the time that the Big 12 teams started to really rev-up their offenses and that was the exact spot where a head coach like Paul Rhoads needs to recognize what is happening…

Namely that it’s going to take a Helluva LOT more points to win games in the Big 12 meaning probably north of 30 points per game

….and adapt accordingly by finding a way to score more points whether that be running the ball, throwing the ball, or doing a combination of running and throwing BUT whatever the method if you are going to compete in the Big 12 Conference today in the game of football there is one very simple rule:

You MUST score points….meaning a Helluva LOT of points!

Now at 3 – 5 on the season after the win over the Pitiful Texas Longhorns….who the more we think about put up one of the most DISGRACEFUL performances in 2015 in the game against Cyclones….Iowa State has wins over…

The Cyclones lost to undefeated Iowa 31-17, undefeated Toledo 30-23, undefeated TCU 45-21 and undefeated Baylor 45-27, with games against one-loss Oklahoma and undefeated Oklahoma State in the next two weeks. Only their 66-31 loss at 5-4 Texas Tech (with losses to TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State) stands outside the top 25. “We’ve been playing really good football teams. We’ve improved in the process. We had one loss that was embarrassing to us, humiliating to us. Other than that, our football team has fought, prepared and done the things we’ve asked of them.”

….if we were the AD at Iowa State after reading the above comments we would call Paul Rhoads into the office realizing we would have already told him that it was either a .500 record or better and a bowl game in 2015 or he was out of a job come December and say to Paul on this Tuesday morning:

“OK Paul. Nice win over Texas. Your team is 3 – 5 and has 4 games left on the schedule. You win 2 of those games and you can return to coach this team in 2016 BUT 4 wins will not do it because that would be 4 wins in your SEVENTH year on the job. Also it’s clear to me that the rest of the Big 12 is leaving us in the dust and that if I don’t make this move now we will just fall further behind the coming years and I need a full stadium for every Iowa State home game to make my athletic budget work. Now good luck to you Paul and I am hoping you can find 2 more wins which I remind you is 1 win less than I said you would need before the season to keep your job. Now give them Hell Paul!”

OK…Paul Rhoads has been warned that he needs to win 2 of his last 4 games to return to coach at Iowa State in 2016 BUT that leaves on the table the most important question that any AD must ask and answer before he fires a head coach and that question is this:

“If I fire my head football coach will I be able to hire a BETTER head coach to replace him?”

Now this is obviously a very subjective question since a head coach that is not posting winning seasons is ALWAYS at risk of being fired BUT each school is different and Iowa State is a very tough place to coach at because it sits in a touch place to recruit to and it plays in a very tough conference in the Big 12 which is full of teams and head coaches that are bound and determined to win games and championships and that is just a Helluva tough neighborhood for a head coach of the Cyclones to operate in.

The obvious answer to the above question is that…

OF COURSE Iowa State can hire a better head coach than Paul Rhoads but WOULD Iowa State hire a better head coach than Paul Rhoads if Rhoads was fired?

Certainly Tennessee COULD HAVE hired a better head coach than Phillip Fulmer after Fulmer was fired after the 2008 season but the Tennessee AD then Mike Hamilton hired Lane Kiffin and then Derek Dooley who by any measure we can think of…

Were NOT even close to being BETTER head coaches than Phillip Fulmer

….and that takes us back to Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard who at this moment should have a list of 5 to 7 current head coaches or assistant coaches on the FBS and FCS levels that he believes would consider the Iowa State job if offered that would be BETTER at winning games and championships than Paul Rhoads at ISU.

Frankly…we have a list here at Coaches Hot Seat of the Top 25 College Head Coaches and Top 25 College Assistant Coaches that are Ready for Bigger and/or Head Coaching Jobs which includes a number of coaches that would LOVE a shot at coaching Iowa State and one FBS AD friend of ours has asked us to post those two lists in the Coaches Hot Seat Blog which we may indeed do next week if we can agree on the last few coaches on both lists actually are in our minds.

15. Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech – Plenty of Coaches Hot Seat members are old enough to have played football in the 1970s and 1980s for coaches like Paul Johnson who spends most of his time…

Chewing out and running down his players

….and we are also smart enough to know that in today’s world just as it was when we were growing up if you do as the Late Great Paul “Bear” Bryant said was the wrong thing to do…

“If you whoop and holler all the time, the players just get used to it.”

…then you will end up with a very inconsistent football program and that is what Paul Johnson has in his EIGHT seasons at Georgia Tech as shown by the yearly records below:

2008: 9 – 4
2009: 10– 3
2010: 6 – 7
2011: 8 – 5
2012: 7 – 7
2013: 7 – 6
2014: 11 – 3
2015: 3 – 6

We are going to let everyone in on a secret of coaching that we got from a member of Coaches Hot Seat who played for Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama in the 1970s who has given us a tremendous amount of valuable information based upon what he learned from Paul Bryant on how to lead people, motivate people, and generally create winning organizations that we use all the time in our REAL day jobs and one of those things that this former player for Bryant told us was an incredible insight that coaches like Paul Johnson that spend a Helluva lot of time yelling at their players should take to heart. The below conversation happened in 2013 in Atlanta at the home of a Coaches Hot Seat member as we were sitting around talking about what this former Alabama player had learned from Paul Bryant:

Coaches Hot Seat: “Tell us about Bryant’s demeanor on the sidelines during games and how it was different from other coaches you played for or saw first-hand in your life.”

Former Bryant Player: “Something that I hardly noticed when I was at Alabama but which really stood out to me as I thought about my days of playing for Coach Bryant and seeing how other coaches interacted with their players is that Coach Bryant on the sidelines during games rarely yelled at players unless they did something really stupid but he sure the Hell would light up his assistant coaches all the time who would then get onto the players about specific things. That small thing which I didn’t give two seconds thought to when I was at Alabama really hit home when I got out into the business world and realized that chewing out front-line employees that were almost always doing their best not only made me look bad and even small, but also undermined the managers in the company who were charged with managing the front-line employees and who resented it when I went straight to their employees to chew someone out or to get an answer to something. Coach Bryant most of all coached his assistant coaches and held them accountable for the play of their individual units and players and that kept Coach above the fray so to speak and because he wasn’t involved in chewing out players directly gave him more power over the entire team in a strange sort of way that I cannot really explain but most importantly the approach that Coach Bryant took made all of us want to play that much harder for him.”

Now as you take in all of the above one must believe that Paul Bryant told his assistant coaches when he hired them that he was going to hold them responsible for the area of the team they coached at that there may indeed be times when he would get on his coaches in a very direct way during practices and in games when he probably should be getting after the player who did something wrong so the assistant coaches shouldn’t take what he says to them personally but instead should take it as a message for the assistant coach to get after his players.

On a related note we once heard former Auburn head coach Pat Dye say in a radio interview that he fired his offensive coordinator Pat Sullivan several times each game only to hire him back quickly and no doubt Dye learned a Helluva lot in how to be a head coach in the NINE seasons that he spent on Paul Bryant’s staff at Alabama.

Memo to Paul Johnson: Not only is it bad form to be yelling at your players all the time it’s hindering your football team’s chances to win more games and that’s what football is all about…

Mike MacIntyre, Colorado – We are reticent to criticize Mike MacIntyre with the Stanford football team headed to Boulder along with several dozen Coaches Hot Seat members this coming Saturday for a game between the Cardinal and the Buffs BUT there is no getting around the FACTS that now in his THIRD season at CU Mike MacIntyre is sitting on records of…

Overall: 10 – 23

Pac-12: 2 – 21

….and has a 4 – 5 record on the board in 2015 and we are still wondering how in the Hell that Colorado lost to Hawaii in the opening game of the season when having ONE more win on the board this season would have been HUGE for the CU Buffs!

Now with the 4 – 5 record in come Stanford to play Colorado as 16 points favorites which looks like a HUGE line to us with the Buffs playing a lot better football in 2015 BUT if Colorado does lose to Stanford they will face these remaining games needing TWO more wins to get to a badly needed bowl game:

Steve Addazio, Boston College – With the Boston College loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday the Eagles continue their falling to pieces routine in the 2015 season because that is FIVE straight losses and an 0 – 6 record in ACC play this year and which leaves Addazio’s records in his THIRD season at BCS at:

Overall: 17 – 18

ACC: 8 – 14

Damn….that is BAD and getting WORSE and the Eagles still having to play these games this season:

Mike Riley, Nebraska – Although we talk to people all over the country about college football programs who we will quote anonymously in this blog to protect their identity we have only quoted current college coaches THREE times in the last 9 football seasons and today will make it FOUR times. A couple of days after Mike Riley was hired by Nebraska from Oregon State last December we were having a drink with a current Pac-12 assistant coach who said to us the following:

“Perennially, the coach with the softest team in the Pac-12 is hired to be the head coach at Nebraska? Please…tell me what sense that makes! None is the answer to that question!”

THINK about this for a second…

Mike Riley who spent the vast majority of his life on the West Coast and almost all of his coaching career at Oregon State which has played on TV dozens of times so there is plenty of tape of the Beavers for anyone that was interested in hiring Riley to watch where in watching that tape they would have found mediocre football for the most part, but more importantly teams that could and often were pushed around when playing the big boys in Pac-12 conference play is the FIRST choice by Nebraska to be their head football coach?

Please…the Idiocy of the hiring of Mike Riley at Nebraska really knows NO DAMN bounds and points to someone….whether that be Nebraska AD Shawn Eichorst or him and others that were involved in hiring Riley….that these folks just have…

No Damn Freaking Clue About Nebraska Football!

As we have written about many, many times in the Coaches Hot Seat Blog we have a great infinity if not downright love for the People of Nebraska and over the past couple of decades we have spent hundreds of days in the Omaha area on business often at night dining with alums and sometimes former football players at the University of Nebraska and if someone asked us to draw up a list of 100 coaches to replace Bo Pelini at Nebraska there is NO doubt in our minds…

Mike Riley would not only have NEVER been on that list of 100 coaches to replace Bo Pelini….Mike Riley’s name would have NEVER entered our minds because we are talking about…

Mark Richt, Georgia – A couple of Coaches Hot Seat members were at the Florida – Georgia game on Saturday and worked their way down to the field just before halftime so they could see Mark Richt up-close as he took his team into the locker room down 20 – 0 and later that night one of them said what they saw in Richt’s face as his team left the field:

“A man that was totally defeated and it seems almost shell-shocked and if we didn’t know better even downright not caring that his team was getting its ass kicked by its main rival.”

The usual competitiveness, the punching back, the good-natured gabs, the gritty competitor…those are all gone it seems and what is left it looks like to us and this is from not seeing Mark Richt up-close on a daily basis is a man that is one of only a very few things:

A man that has lost his fire to coach football

A man that is questioning the importance of football in life

A man that is sick

We certainly hope that Mark Richt is not sick and would imagine he would put his own health ahead of coaching football so let’s move to what we think is going on with Mark Richt at Georgia and this is just a guess BUT a guess based upon what is now patently obvious to anyone paying attention to the goings-on in Athens:

Our opinion is that Mark Richt has lost his love for the game of football and thus coaching the game of football which is driven by how much importance and thus pressure that is placed on Richt and the Georgia players from fans of UGA football which Richt believes is terribly misplaced and warps what he is trying to do which is to raise young men to be great older men while playing some football while they are at the University of Georgia.

Now assume for a moment that the above is correct and we don’t have a clue if it is or not since we cannot read Mark Richt’s mind BUT if even one iota of the above is in Richt’s mind it’s no doubt is having an impact on the amount of energy and enthusiasm that Richt brings to his job each day AND thus to what all of us see on the field each week AND what we saw of Georgia on Saturday against Florida AND what we have seen in recent years from Bulldogs football which is a Helluva long ways from the football that Georgia was playing when Mark Richt first got to Athens.

Getting back to the 2015 season the Bulldogs have played 8 games and are 5 – 3 on the season AND here is how that seasons breaks down…

Beat one FCS team in Southern

Beat four FBS teams that have combined record of 11 – 21

Lost to three FBS teams that have combined record of 18 – 6

In other words Georgia has beaten NO ONE in 2015 and what is the reason for that…in our humble opinion of course?

Georgia…YES the Georgia Bulldogs in Mark Richt’s 15 th year on the job do not have a FBS quarterback on their roster

Georgia’s defense is AVERAGE at best against good or great football teams

Mark Richt is about as motivated as the common house cat to win games and championships at Georgia anymore

Add those THREE things up and you have a Helluva mess on your hands and that is what Georgia football fans are facing right now and into the future it seems until either Mark Richt finds the fire to coach again or Georgia finds itself a new head football coach.

1. Mark Richt, Georgia vs. Florida – Since the last time the Georgia Bulldogs won the SEC Conference Title under Mark Richt….2005…the following SEC teams have won a National Championship…

2006 – 07 – Florida

2009 – 10 – Alabama
2010 – 11 – Auburn
2011 – 12 – Alabama
2012 – 13 – Alabama

….and if that in black & white doesn’t piss off fans of Georgia football then NOTHING WILL but then now we here at Coaches Hot Seat have to wonder…

Is Georgia football’s ultimate goal to win the National Title each season?

Maybe it’s a stated goal at Georgia but we have spent a decent amount of time around Athens, Georgia the last couple of years and we don’t think Mark Richt will lose one nanosecond of sleep if he retires without a National Championship on his resume which raises another question:

How driven is Mark Richt to win a National Championship at Georgia?

Our guess….whether Mark Richt wins a National Championship at Georgia or not is probably not real high on what Mark Richt thinks is important to be worried about in life which raises another question:

If you are NOT driven to win a National Championship at a place like Georgia and we mean REALLY driven to win a National Championship should you be the head coach at Georgia?

CANNOT LOSE Game for Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs

…but is this a CANNOT LOSE Game in the deep recesses of Mark Richt’s mind?

Come on Mark Richt…you aren’t going to lose to a Florida team with a first year head coach that took over a Gators team that won 10 games in Will Muschamp’s last two seasons in Gainesville…are you?

Mike Riley, Nebraska vs. Purdue – Not that we think the 8-point favorite Nebraska Cornhuskers can possibly lose on the road to 1 – 6 Purdue Boilermakers BUT if Nebraska did fool around and lose to Purdue on Saturday Mike Riley would wake-up on Monday morning on one of the Hottest Seats in the American Republic!

We really don’t want to see Mike Riley lose this game so Good Luck Mike!

3. Gus Malzahn, Auburn vs. Ole Miss –The reality of the very Damn tough situation that Gus Malzahn now faces is defined by two different things…

YES….Ole Miss is a CANNOT LOSE Game for Gus Malzahn and the Auburn Tigers!

4. Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss vs. Auburn – Based upon the losing that has happened to Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss in his first THREE years at the school that is heavily tilted towards the back-end of the regular season….

2012 – Lost 5 of their last 8 games
2013 – Lost 5 of their last 9 games
2014 – Lost 3 of their last 5 games

….we have a working theory here at Coaches Hot Seat that coming from as we do the “Bill Walsh…let’s call and execute the right play boys” school of football that Hugh Freeze’s “Hocus-Pocus” wears-off the Ole Miss players somewhere around the middle of the football season and right on schedule in 2015 at the first of October Ole Miss has now…

Kyle Flood, Rutgers vs. Wisconsin – We will admit we haven’t had the best grasp of the situation at Rutgers and head coach Kyle Flood in the Complete Freaking Disaster that is Rutgers athletics these days BUT a Coaches Hot Seat member remembered this past week that he worked on Wall Street with a Rutgers alum in the early 1990s in Manhattan and tracked that person down and after some chit-chat about what each had been doing the past 20-plus years the CHS Member asked about Kyle Flood’s status and the response was:

Rutgers Alum: “It’s a Damn mess over there…always has been it seems. From what I have been hearing if Rutgers doesn’t go to a bowl game this season Flood is finished because the bottom would drop out of the support for the football program and also because it might be possible to rehire Greg Schiano at Rutgers if he doesn’t take another job first.”

Well…there you have it. Kyle Flood needs to take Rutgers to a bowl game in 2015 to save his job and sitting on a record of 3 – 4 with these games left…

Here is a great excerpt from that book that happened just after the First Battle of Bull Run, August 1861:

“Dozens of regiments had set up impromptu around Fort Corcoran, on Arlington Heights. Every day these canvas congeries trembled like leaves in the wind as fresh rumors of an impending Confederate attack. And every day Lincoln heard fresh stories of demoralized troops, mutinous regiments, poor discipline. Some regiments were entitled to – and clamoring for – an immediate discharge, their ninety-day service complete. The War Department’s officers seemed to busy for the burdensome task of mustering them out. Unchecked, however, mutinous sentiments could spread through camps like a virulent disease.

Lincoln decided to see for himself, and Seward went with him. A few days after Bull Run, they rode across the Potomac in an open carriage on an impromptu visit to the troops. What greeted them was redoubts spreading across the landscape, tents sprouting like mushrooms in nearly every direction, dusty roads, a cross-hatching of cart tracks, men milling or lolling about, few signs of order or purpose. Yet the District, on edge for its safety, has more than enough men to defend it – if the men chose.

As the carriage rattled along towards Fort Corcoran, a red-bearded colonel strode up: William Tecumseh Sherman. He had commanded a brigade at Bull Run, superbly. Sherman asked if the President had come to see the troops. “Yes,” said Lincoln. “We heard that you had got over the big scare and we thought we would come over and see the boys.”

Sherman got into the carriage, giving the driver directions to a camp at the top of a small hill. Sitting next to Lincoln, he asked if the President intended to speak to the men. “I would like to,” said Lincoln.

Sherman said he no objection to that, but he did not want cheering, “No hurrahing, no humbug. We had enough of it before Bull Run to spoil any set of them.” None worse than the 69 th New York, filled with Irishmen angry at not being discharged. Sherman had rebuked one of the officers of lax discipline.

Standing in the carriage, Lincoln gave an impromptu talk to Sherman’s troops: bravery, sacrifice, gratitude, a glorious future. The men began to cheer, but he held up his hand. “Don’t cheer boys, I confess I rather like it myself, but Colonel Sherman says it is not military, and I guess we had better defer to his opinion.”

Closing his impromptu peroration, Lincoln said that as Commander in Chief, he was determined that every man should be treated exactly as the law required: his indirect promise that those entitled to a discharge would soon have one. As the carriage moved on, a young officer ran after it, calling out piteously, “Mr. Lincoln! Mr. Lincoln!”

Lincoln ordered the driver to stop. Here was the officer of the 69 th New York whom Sherman had criticized, panting hard. “Mr. President, I have a cause of grievance. This morning I went to speak to Colonel Sherman, and he threatened to shoot me.”

“I told him Mr. President, that if he refused to obey my order, I would shoot him on the spot,” said Sherman. “And I here repeat it, sir, that if I remain in command here, and he or any other man refuses to obey my orders, I’ll shoot him on the spot.”
