Post Week 9 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings

MikeRiley1181818

1.  Mike Riley, Nebraska – Although we talk to people all over the country about college football programs who we will quote anonymously in this blog to protect their identity we have only quoted current college coaches THREE times in the last 9 football seasons and today will make it FOUR times. A couple of days after Mike Riley was hired by Nebraska from Oregon State last December we were having a drink with a current Pac-12 assistant coach who said to us the following:

“Perennially, the coach with the softest team in the Pac-12 is hired to be the head coach at Nebraska? Please…tell me what sense that makes! None is the answer to that question!”

THINK about this for a second…

Mike Riley who spent the vast majority of his life on the West Coast and almost all of his coaching career at Oregon State which has played on TV dozens of times so there is plenty of tape of the Beavers for anyone that was interested in hiring Riley to watch where in watching that tape they would have found mediocre football for the most part, but more importantly teams that could and often were pushed around when playing the big boys in Pac-12 conference play is the FIRST choice by Nebraska to be their head football coach?

Please…the Idiocy of the hiring of Mike Riley at Nebraska really knows NO DAMN bounds and points to someone….whether that be Nebraska AD Shawn Eichorst or him and others that were involved in hiring Riley….that these folks just have…

No Damn Freaking Clue About Nebraska Football!

NebraskaStadium281818

As we have written about many, many times in the Coaches Hot Seat Blog we have a great infinity if not downright love for the People of Nebraska and over the past couple of decades we have spent hundreds of days in the Omaha area on business often at night dining with alums and sometimes former football players at the University of Nebraska and if someone asked us to draw up a list of 100 coaches to replace Bo Pelini at Nebraska there is NO doubt in our minds…

Mike Riley would not only have NEVER been on that list of 100 coaches to replace Bo Pelini….Mike Riley’s name would have NEVER entered our minds because we are talking about…

Nebraska Football

…and Nebraska Football is NOT about a quarterback standing three yards behind the center throwing the football and we thought that everyone in Lincoln had come to understand that FACT when Bill Callahan’s Sorry Ass was hired and then appropriately run out of the Great State of Nebraska!

Mike Riley is a fine fellow and if Mike Riley called ANYONE here at Coaches Hot Seat today and said he really needed “X” done besides taking his ass of the Hot Seat we would do it in a nanosecond BUT Mike Riley no more should be nor has earned the right to be the head coach at Nebraska AND eventually either tomorrow, or the next day, or the next week, or the next month, or maybe even next year Mike Riley will be fired at Nebraska and appropriately…

The Stupid Son of a Bitch that hired Mike Riley

…will also have his Stupid Ass run out of town and NEVER be hired again at a big-time football program like Nebraska!

We have a list here at Coaches Hot Seat…

Worst Head Coaching Hires in the Post-Bear Bryant College Football History

….and here is the Top 10 of that list as it stands today:

1.  Charlie Weis, Kansas

2.  Charlie Weis, Notre Dame

3.  Gerry Faust, Notre Dame

4.  Bill Callahan, Nebraska

5.  Lane Kiffin, Tennessee

6.  Lane Kiffin, USC

7.  Mike Riley, Nebraska

8.  Mike Price, Alabama

9.  Howard Schnellenberger, Oklahoma

10.  Ron Zook, Florida

Congratulations to….

Charlie Weis for being the list TWICE!

Lane Kiffin for being on the list TWICE!

AND

Nebraska for being on the list TWICE!

How does it feel fans of Nebraska football to be in the company of Freaking Charlie “Decided Schematic Advantage” Weis and Lane “Someone find me a mirror so I can look at my Precious Ass in it and make it quick” Kiffin?

Do you feel ashamed fans of Nebraska football?

You should feel ashamed BUT be ashamed for the RIGHT thing and the RIGHT thing is that you let THREE Complete Morons get into positions of power at the University of Nebraska:

Chancellor Harvey Perlman

Former AD Steve Pederson

Current AD Shawn Eichorst

Without the THREE Husker Stooges as they are known here at Coaches Hot Seat there is NO…

Bill Callahan

….thus no reason to hire Bo Pelini and then there is also no Idiot around to hire Mike Riley who we point out posted a record in Pac-12 Conference play at Oregon State of…

58 – 63

….and over the last FIVE seasons at Oregon State posted a Pac-12 Conference record of…

19 – 26!

A record of 19 – 26 in Pac-12 Conference play over the last FIVE seasons can get you the…

Freaking Head Coaching job at the University of Nebraska?

Please…is there ANYONE in the state of Nebraska that can explain to us how current Nebraska AD Shawn Eichorst is still employed at the University of Nebraska?

Geez….getting back to the point here…that Mike Riley after the Huskers Total Debacle against a Purdue team that has been getting its ass whipped for a few years now is on the No. 1 Hot Seat after that Total Debacle against Purdue are 3 – 6 on the season and still have to play games against…

Michigan State
At Rutgers
Iowa

For some reason a quote from Paul “Bear” Bryant comes to mind in this spot and we aren’t talking about the head coach at Nebraska when using this quote but rather the chancellor’s office at the University of Nebraska:

PaulBryant181818

“Make no mistake. You start at the top. If you don’t have a good one at the top, you don’t have a cut dog’s chance. If you do, the rest falls into place. You have to have good assistants, and a lot of things, but first you have to have the chairman of the board.”

As the main character in the Michael Crichton movie Disclosure…Tom Sanders…played by the Great Michael Douglas in the movie…is reminded of over and over again after problems keep cropping up even after he believes he has fixed the real problem is told in messages which says…

“Solve the Problem….It’s Not Over”

…if the fans of Nebraska football REALLY want to “Solve the Problem” they MUST actually…

Solve the Damn Problem

….which is Harvey Perlman’s Sorry Ass should be run out of Lincoln before he does more damage to the University and the Nebraska football program.

HarveyPerlman891819

In our humble opinion of course!

MarkRicht818181

2.  Mark Richt, Georgia – A couple of Coaches Hot Seat members were at the Florida – Georgia game on Saturday and worked their way down to the field just before halftime so they could see Mark Richt up-close as he took his team into the locker room down 20 – 0 and later that night one of them said what they saw in Richt’s face as his team left the field:

“A man that was totally defeated and it seems almost shell-shocked and if we didn’t know better even downright not caring that his team was getting its ass kicked by its main rival.”

What is going on with Mark Richt?

The usual competitiveness, the punching back, the good-natured gabs, the gritty competitor…those are all gone it seems and what is left it looks like to us and this is from not seeing Mark Richt up-close on a daily basis is a man that is one of only a very few things:

A man that has lost his fire to coach football

A man that is questioning the importance of football in life

A man that is sick

We certainly hope that Mark Richt is not sick and would imagine he would put his own health ahead of coaching football so let’s move to what we think is going on with Mark Richt at Georgia and this is just a guess BUT a guess based upon what is now patently obvious to anyone paying attention to the goings-on in Athens:

Our opinion is that Mark Richt has lost his love for the game of football and thus coaching the game of football which is driven by how much importance and thus pressure that is placed on Richt and the Georgia players from fans of UGA football which Richt believes is terribly misplaced and warps what he is trying to do which is to raise young men to be great older men while playing some football while they are at the University of Georgia.

Now assume for a moment that the above is correct and we don’t have a clue if it is or not since we cannot read Mark Richt’s mind BUT if even one iota of the above is in Richt’s mind it’s no doubt is having an impact on the amount of energy and enthusiasm that Richt brings to his job each day AND thus to what all of us see on the field each week AND what we saw of Georgia on Saturday against Florida AND what we have seen in recent years from Bulldogs football which is a Helluva long ways from the football that Georgia was playing when Mark Richt first got to Athens.

Getting back to the 2015 season the Bulldogs have played 8 games and are 5 – 3 on the season AND here is how that seasons breaks down…

Beat one FCS team in Southern

Beat four FBS teams that have combined record of 11 – 21

Lost to three FBS teams that have combined record of 18 – 6

In other words Georgia has beaten NO ONE in 2015 and what is the reason for that…in our humble opinion of course?

Georgia…YES the Georgia Bulldogs in Mark Richt’s 15 th year on the job do not have a FBS quarterback on their roster

Georgia’s defense is AVERAGE at best against good or great football teams

Mark Richt is about as motivated as the common house cat to win games and championships at Georgia anymore

Add those THREE things up and you have a Helluva mess on your hands and that is what Georgia football fans are facing right now and into the future it seems until either Mark Richt finds the fire to coach again or Georgia finds itself a new head football coach.

Up next for the 5 – 3 over and 3 – 3 in SEC play Georgia Bulldogs:

Kentucky
At Auburn
Georgia Southern
At Georgia Tech

YES….Georgia has plenty of talent to win ALL FOUR of its remaining games but there is enough chaos at UGA right now to lose ALL FOUR of its remaining games as well!

KevinWilson77-393x530

3.  Kevin Wilson, Indiana – The Indiana Hoosiers were off in Week 9 but get back at things with a game against Iowa in Week 10 and then the 4 – 4 Hoosiers finish the season against…

Michigan
At Maryland
At Purdue

…and one would have to think that since IU head coach Kevin Wilson is now in his FIFTH season at the school and has ZERO .500 or better records that the Hoosiers will need to find at least TWO more wins for Wilson to be back coach at Indiana in 2016…right?

One would think but then this is Indiana football we are talking about here and maybe one can survive going FOREVER without a .500 or better record and hang onto your job because after all….

This is Indiana Football we are talking about here!

DanaHolgorsen17171

4.  Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia – The West Virginia Mountaineers got crushed by TCU on Thursday night by the score of 40 – 10 which dropped WVU’s records to….

3 – 4 overall

0 – 4 in Big 12 Conference play

….and left head coach Dana Holgorsen’s records now in his FOURTH season coaching West Virginia in the Big 12 Conference at….

Overall: 21 – 24

Big 12: 11 – 20

….and if those records are acceptable at West Virginia….WELL…

“Where have you gone, Rich Rodriguez,
Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
What’s that you say, Mrs. Robinson.
Jolting Joe has left and gone away,
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey”

Up next for West Virginia….

Texas Tech at home this coming Saturday in the…

Better Damn Not Lose Game of the Year for head coaches Dana Holgorsen and Kliff Kingsbury!

5.  Todd Berry, La. Monroe – With La. Monroe’s loss to La. Lafayette on Saturday that is SIX straight losses for the Warhawks and a 1 – 7 record overall and now in his SIXTH season coaching at La. Monroe Todd Berry is sitting on records of…

Overall:  28 – 41

Sun Belt:  20 – 23

….and we don’t have a clue if those kind of records can keep you employed at La. Monroe or not BUT it will be interesting to find out in the coming weeks if that is so!

The 1 – 7 Warhawks have left on their schedule….

At Troy
Arkansas State
At Texas State
At Hawaii
New Mexico State

….so let’s just keep playing out the games and see where this all ends up because there’s not much else La. Monroe can or should do at this point.

6.  Chuck Martin, Miami (Ohio) – At the cradle of coaches which Miami (Ohio) is known since the below coaches have led this school’s football team during its illustrious history…

Sid Gilman
Woody Hayes
Ara Parseghian
Bo Schembechler
Bill Mallory
Dick Crum
Randy Walker
Terry Hoeppner

…things are not going so great these days with the Redhawks and current Miami (Ohio) head coach Chuck Martin now sitting on records in his SECOND year on the job of…

Overall:  3 – 18
MAC:  2 – 11

…and we certainly expect that in these last THREE games that Chuck Martin and his football team do SOMETHING!

Eastern Michigan
Akron
At UMass

It’s a Damn mess at Miami (Ohio)…there’s just no getting around that FACT!

DarrellHazell18818

7.  Darrell Hazell, Purdue – A BIG Congratulations are in order to Darrell Hazell and his Purdue football team for their win over Nebraska and for the Boilermakers continuing to fight and play hard in all of their games this season even if they have been challenged in actually getting some wins on the board! Not against Nebraska though with Purdue getting the win to move to…

2 – 6 overall

1 – 3 in Big Ten play

….with these games still left to play:

Illinois
At Northwestern
At Iowa
Indiana

Hell….if Purdue plays the way it played against Nebraska they can win THREE of their remaining FOUR games and finish at 5 – 7 which in our minds would be a step-forward and might just save Darrell Hazell’s job BUT that is a BIG DAMN…

IF!

First….Purdue MUST beat Illinois at home on Saturday!

GusMalzahn11818

8.  Gus Malzahn, Auburn – Against FBS teams in 2015 the Auburn Tigers have THREE wins over…

Louisville which is 4 – 4 on the season

San Jose State which is 4 – 4 on the season

Kentucky which is 4 – 4 on the season

…and losses to….

LSU
Mississippi State
Arkansas
Ole Miss

…and one really has to wonder with the below games left on the schedule and with Auburn now sitting at 4 – 4 on the season…

At Texas A&M
Georgia
Idaho
Alabama

….if Auburn finishes at 6 – 6 on the year…our best guess right now with wins over falling to pieces Georgia and Idaho at home….which would leave head coach Gus Malzahn’s records the last TWO seasons at…

Overall:  14 – 11

SEC:  6 – 10

….what would the Powers That Be at Auburn including the Athletic Director and the alums/big boosters that along with the very loyal fans at Auburn collectively pour Tens of Millions of Dollars into the Auburn Football program possibly be thinking then?

Something like….

What the Hell is the point in spending north of $50 Million Dollars on Auburn football each year when it has a LOSING record in SEC Conference play over the last two seasons?

Our recommendation to Gus Malzahn: Don’t get blown out this coming Saturday night in College Station against Texas A&M son because if you do and somehow finish the season below .500 you will NOT be the head coach at Auburn come December…PERIOD.

CharlieStrong288118

9.  Charlie Strong, Texas – Let it be recorded that in Charlie Strong’s…

21 st Football Game as the Head Coach at Texas

….that his Longhorns football team went to Iowa State….which has won FOUR Big 12 Conference Games the last THREE seasons combined….and lost to the Cyclones by the score of…

24 to Freaking ZERO!

Oh by the way….

Northern Iowa scored 7 points on Iowa State

Iowa scored 31 points on Iowa State

Toledo scored 20 points on Iowa State

Kansas scored 13 points on Iowa State

Texas Tech scored 66 points on Iowa State

TCU scored 45 points on Iowa State

Baylor scored 45 points on Iowa State

AND

Texas scored ZERO points on Iowa State

A FREAKING SHUTOUT!

Now at 3 – 5 on the season and 2 – 3 in Big 12 play Charlie Strong and the Longhorns face Kansas at home on Saturday which with a loss would no doubt in our minds lead to…

Charlie Strong being fired in December

…..which is followed by games against:

At West Virginia
Texas Tech
At Baylor

Bottom-Line: If Texas finishes with a losing record in 2015 one would have to think Texas will be looking for a new head football coach come December and if we were Charlie Strong’s agent we would be talking to the schools that now have or will have open jobs in the near future because it’s going to be No Damn Fun to be in Texas in the offseason with a losing record on the board for Charlie Strong and his coaches IF and that is a BIG IF Texas keeps Charlie around for another year.

Our guess on what might be the best fit for Charlie Strong among the open jobs…

Maryland

CurtisJohnson888899

10.  Curtis Johnson, Tulane – With Tulane’s very predictable loss to a very slow in getting out of the gates Memphis team on Saturday that drops the Green Wave’s records in 2015 to…

2 – 6 overall

1 – 4 in American Athletic play

….and head coach Curtis Johnson’s records at Tulane to…

Overall:  14 – 31

Conference:  10 – 19

….and we would recommend to Curtis Johnson he find a few wins over these last FOUR games…

UConn
At Army
At SMU
Tulsa

….or the Tulane job will come open in December which in our minds is a job we would be very interested in getting with the amount of high school football talent that lives with a 5 hour drive of the school and that is sitting in one of the more entertaining cities in America!

And

“You know this baseball game of ours comes up from the youth – that means the boys. And after you’ve been a boy, and grow up to know how to play ball, then you come to the boys you see representing themselves today in our national pastime.”
