A Few Thoughts on the 2016 – 2017 FBS Coaching Changes

As always the folks at FootballScoop.com are doing a great job of keeping up with the 2016-17 Coaching Changes on the FBS level….

2016-17 Coaching Changes, FootballScoop.com

….and it is interesting to see their listing of the number of head coaching changes in FBS in recent years:

2008 – 22
2009 – 23
2010 – 24
2011 – 28
2012 – 31
2013 – 20
2014 – 15
2015 – 29
2016 – 14

That’s an average of…

….FBS head coaching changes over the last NINE years with probably a few more changes coming this year which works out to an average of about…

….of FBS head coaching jobs changing each season.

Is a roughly 20% turnover in FBS head coaches a season an appropriate number or is there even an appropriate number when considering FBS head coaching turnover?

The answer to that question is that FBS head coaches just like EVERYONE else in America is evaluated and kept in their jobs based upon performance and most Americans if they didn’t perform at an acceptable level for…

Just One Week

….would more than likely be shown the door so please save us the crying about coaches getting fired after two or three years on the job!

As the Great Vince Lombardi said long before Coaches Hot Seat showed-up on the scene in 2007…

“If you aren’t fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm!”

As for the head coaching jobs that have turned over in 2016-17 here are few comments on those firings and new hires if there has been one…

Baylor – What a Damn mess Baylor football and athletics is for that matter. We are not sure what they are teaching in the churches, classrooms and halls at Baylor University, but for Damn sure it isn’t Christianity as defined by Jesus Christ and as spread by Paul. Baylor should be a great coaching job, but every time we think of Baylor football now we think of…

Sorry Ass People claiming to be Christians putting the safety and lives of innocent women at risk in the name of winning football games which.

Disgusting is the word that comes to mind when we see or hear Baylor University and the next head coach in Waco is going to have a Helluva rebuilding job on his hands!

Who should Baylor hire as their next head coach: We haven’t a Damn clue!

Cincinnati – Watching Tommy Tuberville the last few years at Cincinnati none of us thought his entire heart and soul was into coaching the Bearcats and we would recommend to Tubs before he goes looking for another head coaching job that he might want to do some TV work for a year or so and see if maybe that is where he might find some enjoyable and decent paying work that want take 24/7 of his time!

Is Tommy Tuberville a College Football Hall of Fame coach?

Well, considering that Tubs and Auburn got jobbed out of playing for the 2004 National Title which we think Auburn would have won that year, and that Tommy has 159 – 99 overall record we would have to say that…

YES…Tubs is a future College Football Hall of Fame coach!

Who should Cincinnati hire as their next head coach? Maybe Philip Montgomery at Tulsa or Scott Satterfield at Appalachian State or Bobby Wilder at Old Dominion or Charlie Strong maybe….hire someone with some energy whatever you do Cincinnati!

Florida Atlantic – No doubt Charlie Partridge worked hard at FAU, but three straight seasons of…

3 – 9

….records with no noticeable improvement in the program doomed Charlie and now FAU has to start anew again. We know the Boca Raton, Florida area pretty well having visited and played golf around Boca many times, and we would love to have the FAU head coaching job and so should LOTS of good coaches!

We would probably look at a very good FCS head coach to move up to the FBS level if we were AD at FAU.

Who should FAU hire as their next head coach? We would hire a top and hungry FCS head coach who had done some recruiting in Florida for the FAU job.

Florida International – Ron Turner should have NEVER been hired as the head coach at FIU, and it going to be interesting to see what the 65 year old Butch Davis will do with the Panthers where a .500+ record in any season is a pretty Damn good coaching job.

Fresno State – Whatever caused Tim DeRuyter’s fall at Fresno State after winning back-to-back Mountain West Conference Championships in his first two years on the job (2012 – 2013) we haven’t been able to figure it out, but for Damn sure something changed in Fresno besides losing a few good players to the NFL. The last few years DeRuyter hasn’t looked happy coaching Fresno State and there is nothing worse than not being totally committed to the job you are doing which can be severely impacted by many things on and off the field that most people know nothing about.

Fresno State has hired former Cal head Jeff Tedford to be the head coach at Fresno State, and we would say the 55 year old Tedford is an interesting hire that we have no Damn clue how it’s going to work out. When Jeff Tedford is in a good spot and very motivated he is a very good football coach and exceptional play-caller, and with that in mind if we are the AD at Fresno State we make sure Jeff Tedford is in a good spot and very motivated!

Georgia State – The Georgia State job should be a decent place for up-and-coming coaches to take and run with since there is a TON of high school football talent with a 3 hour drive of downtown Atlanta, but for some reason like UAB which is only a couple of hours away the Georgia State program has never really become a thing to do in Atlanta.

Most of all Georgia State football needs an identity and a quality head coach and if we are the AD at Georgia State right now we are probably looking for an innovative, ambitious, highly-competent FCS-level head coach to take this job.

Houston – Certainly no one with a working brain thought Tom Herman was going to hang around Houston after UH lost out on getting into the Big 12 Conference and if Texas hadn’t hired Herman we have no doubt he would the head coach of LSU today.

Houston has a TON of money to spend on a football coach and high school football players galore all around the Houston + South Texas area and with that in mind Houston should be able to hire a Helluva football coach.

Who should Houston hire as their next head coach? We would hire P.J. Fleck at a place like Houston which really needs someone to keep the pot stirred, but then we would hire P.J. Fleck at most places if sitting in an AD chair with an open head coaching job.

Indiana – Whatever was going on at Indiana must have raised some eyebrows behind the scenes because that was simplest mutual parting of the ways we have seen between a head coach and AD/School with Kevin Wilson leaving Indiana since Tommy Tuberville was giving a TON of money to “resign” at Auburn a few years back.

We know very little about the new Indiana head coach Tom Allen, but we have read about Coach Allen is impressive…mighty Damn impressive.

Great Luck to you Tom Allen and remember…do it YOUR way because YOU are the head coach at Indiana now Tom!

LSU – Reality is Les Miles should have been fired at the end of the 2015 season and there is not a Chance In Hell that Ed Orgeron would have be the head coach at LSU today if Les Miles had been fired last year or if the Texas job had not opened up for Tom Herman this year.

The most interesting thing about the LSU head coaching search both last year and in 2016 was that it seems LSU AD Joe Alleva was targeting ONE guy…

Jimbo Fisher in 2015
Tom Herman in 2016

….and when that ONE guy didn’t come through he fell back to…

Les Miles in 2015
Ed Orgeron in 2016

Now let’s assume for a moment that a new AD had been hired at LSU before the end of this year’s college football season and that AD was charged by the President and Board at LSU…

“Hire the best coach possible!”

….would Ed Orgeron have been the “best coach possible” or rather way down the list of potential new head coach at LSU?

Way down the list of potential new head coaches at LSU is the answer to that question and we have it on good authority there are several very good FBS coaches who would have loved a shot at the LSU job, but who never got a call.

We can only wish the best of luck to Coach Ed Orgeron who we will really be pulling for the in coming years to do great things at LSU and of course Ed…if you win less than 10+ games a year Son….yours ass will go right on the…

Nevada – We had been hearing rumblings from University of Nevada folks we know that they weren’t very happy with Brian Polian and the state of the Nevada football program for about a year now, and it looks like those folks got their way after a very AVERAGE 5 – 7 record in Brian’s fourth year at Nevada.

Nevada is not an easy coaching job sitting in Reno, Nevada which is a nice town, but not exactly an easy place to recruit kids to and certainly recruiting will need to big positive piece of the next head coach at the school.

The word on the street is that Eastern Washington’s Beau Baldwin and Vanderbilt OC Andy Ludwig are up for the Nevada job and if we asked to choose between one of those two coaches we are hiring…

Andy Ludwig

Oregon – People that didn’t get to see the Oregon football program in person in the last year have no Damn idea how bad things were with Ducks football which in our opinion looked….

Totally Leaderless in 2016

….which left the folks at Oregon and the powerbrokers behind the scenes with no choice left but to fire Mark Helfrich who let’s be honest here…

Is NOT head coaching material on the FBS level forget at a high-profile place like Oregon!

Who would we hire to be the next head coach at Oregon? Well…a few years ago we thought Chris Petersen would be an amazing hire for Washington even though we knew that Petersen would build a powerhouse in Seattle that would directly threaten Stanford football and for Oregon we know that the ONE coach we hope the Ducks don’t hire is…

P. J. Fleck

…because the last Damn thing that Stanford football needs is a dynamic coach like Fleck in the Pac-12 North raising Hell and taking names!

Maybe the folks at Oregon and the powerbrokers pulling the levers behind the scenes will go with a “name” coach who will be a terrible fit for Eugene and who will no doubt burn the Oregon football program to the ground which Hey…won’t be a bad thing for Stanford football going forward!

Purdue – We are old enough to remember Joe Tiller throwing the ball all around the place at Purdue posting an overall record of…

87 – 62

….in 12 seasons at the school and what has been the overall record of the Boilermakers since Tiller was pushed out the door at Purdue?

31 – 67

Damn….the above is what happens when you have Total Damn Idiots hiring football coaches and let’s hope that Purdue finds a great coach this time around to get things going again in West Lafayette!

Who would we hire as the head coach at Purdue? Couldn’t go wrong with Jeff Brohm, P.J. Fleck, Matt Rhule, Troy Calhoun, Philip Montgomery, Bobby Wilder, Scott Satterfield…to name a few head coaches we would be going after as AD at Purdue.

San Jose State – In four seasons at San Jose State Ron Caragher posted an overall record of…

19 – 30

…which of course rightly led to his firing and now the question is who is San Jose State going to get to right the Good Spartan Ship?

If we were the AD at San Jose State we would be thinking of someone who can bring an innovative offense to San Jose….and we can think of 10 coaches like that from young ones, to old ones, to ones middle-aged….and certainly Jon Wilner who follows San Jose State closely has his list…

Six names for San Jose State job, Jon Wilner, East Bay Times

….none of which we would hire at San Jose State by the way.

If we are the AD at San Jose State we would probably try to hire…

Maybe we will whisper it to San Jose State AD Gene Bleymaier instead of writing it in this spot!

Texas – In THREE seasons at Texas Charlie Strong posted an overall record of…

16 – 21

…and whether you are white, black, red or green that kind of record in THREE seasons would have gotten your ass fired and no surprise…

Charlie Strong got his ass fired at Texas!

With Tom Herman taking things over at Texas and most of the folks in front and behind the scenes in the Lone Star State with a rooting interest in the Longhorns are now in the stable and ready to see what Herman can do and we predict great things for Texas in the coming years, but when we write…

…that means Tom Herman you better Damn win 10+ games a year or your ass…

Will Go Right on the Hot Seat!

Mack Brown in his first 12 seasons as the head coach at Texas averaged winning…

…games a season BUT in his last 4 seasons he averaged winning…

….games a season and thus the reason why Mack Brown’s ass was fired after the 2013 season!

Coach Up Those Longhorns Tom Herman!
