We can’t all strike very big blows, and even the little ones count for something.”
“The more we progress the more we tend to progress. We advance not in arithmetical but in geometrical progression. We draw compound interest on the whole capital of knowledge and virtue which has been accumulated since the dawning of time. Some eighty thousand years are supposed to have existed between paleolithic and neolithic man. Yet in all that time he only learned to grind his flint stones instead of chipping them. But within our father’s lives what changes have there not been? The railway and the telegraph, chloroform and applied electricity. Ten years now go further than a thousand then, not so much on account of our finer intellects as because the light we have shows us the way to more. With Week 5 of the 2018 College Football Season in the books we can say 2018 has been an interesting year so far and that we are seeing some major trends that could impact college football for the long-term with the main trend being the increase in scoring which is being driven by head football coaches who no longer see as scoring a Helluva lot of points as a negative which it should have never been in the first place!
We have told the story many times about seeing Florida practice in the first-year under Steve Spurrier in 1990 during Fall camp before the season and recognizing immediately that the SEC Conference and as we came to see all of college football in general would be changed forever with Spurrier’s desire to score as many points as possible. Spurrier’s approach to the game with the Head Ball Coach winning….
1 National Title
8 SEC Conference Titles
….in 12 seasons at Florida was fully understood in the 1990s but as we approach 2020 the idea that a team should hang 30, 40 or even 50+ points on their opponents is not a bad thing because if you score 30, 40 or even 50+ points you are going to be a very hard football team to beat…as Barry Switzer knew in the 1970s in his “hang half-hundred” days in Norman coaching the Sooners!
We will be interested to see in the coming years how many coaches embrace the idea of “cutting loose” their offense to score as many points as possible to make winning football games all that much easier and how many coaches continue to try and play a possession game which will be doomed to fail as more points are piled up and the teams without the ability to score a lot finding themselves losing more games they win and those head coaches then finding their asses on the Hot Seat!
More Points on the Scoreboard = Insurance Against A Loss = Your Ass Not on the Hot Seat so…Score A Helluva Lot of Points Coaches!
With that in mind let’s bring out the Great Johnny Cash to give these Hot Seat Coaches Hell!
1. David Beaty, Kansas – Kansas is not an easy place to win football games which is certainly the case in today’s Big 12 Conference where you better be scoring 30+ points a game to have any chance to win a lot of games, but there comes a point when a head coach at Kansas either has to fish or cut bait and in Beaty’s fourth year at KU he is off to a 2 – 3 record which puts his overall records at KU at…
Overall: 5 – 36
Big 12: 1 – 28
You look with us at the rest of the Kansas schedule and tell us how many more games do you think the Jayhawks will win 2018?
At West Virginia At Texas Tech TCU Iowa State At Kansas State At Oklahoma Texas
Kansas could beat Kansas State…YES…that could happen but will Kansas beat anyone else besides KSU?
Not in our opinion and that is why we think the Kansas job will open up in November and just a note to college coaches out there that has an agent that is always calling around to ADs whispering in those ADs ears that “X” coach would be a great fit IF you have an opening down the road….
Don’t be talking to your agents about potential job openings during the season or your ass will take the focus off games you are coaching this year with your current team and you will get your ass upset as happened this past weekend which will cost you a shot at a better job!
Memo To College Head and Assistant Coaches that might be up for Head Coaching Jobs:
Quit talking to your agent during the Freaking Season you Damn Morons and tell your agent you will talk to him in late November at the earliest about potential job openings!
Some of these coaches…just not the brightest bulbs!
2. Lovie Smith, Illinois – Lovie Smith’s Illini had a bye week in Week 5 and return to play in Week 6 with a game at Rutgers which might be the only chance for Illinois to get another win in 2018….except for Nebraska which might not win a game itself in 2018!
Right now Lovie Smith’s records at Illinois in his third year on the job stand at…
Overall: 7 – 21
Big Ten: 2 – 17
…and if you were thinking that is BAD…you are RIGHT!
Illinois has left in 2018….
At Rutgers Purdue At Wisconsin At Maryland Minnesota At Nebraska Iowa At Northwestern
…and if we were an Illinois fan we would assume that….
…and Hell….maybe even
…are beatable this season but if we had to guess if Illinois does beat Totally Hapless Rutgers on Saturday they will finish the 2018 season at…
3 – 9 or 4 – 8
Can Lovie Smith survive posting even a 4 – 8 record in his third season at Illinois?
Not a snowball’s chance in Key West in August!
3. Chris Ash, Rutgers – Rutgers did play a decent game against a pretty good Indiana team on Saturday before losing 24 – 7 and in Week 6 the 1 – 4 Scarlet Knights host Illinois in a classic…
Hot Seat Coach vs. Hot Seat Coach
…game with the losing moving up in the Coaches Hot Seat Rankings unless Kansas doesn’t win again since it would impossible to get by David Beaty in the #1 Hot Seat unless the Jayhawks find a way to win another game this season.
Our guess…Rutgers finds a way to beat Illinois on Saturday in a close game!
Oh…Chris Ash’s record at Rutgers now stand at:
Overall: 7 – 22
Big Ten: 3 – 18
4. Randy Edsall, Connecticut – After Connecticut got blasted by Cincinnati on Saturday by the score of 49 – 7 after getting blasted by Syracuse 51 – 21 the week before we are not quite sure what is going on at UConn under Randy Edsall but we are sure of one Damn thing…
Whatever the Hell is going on it isn’t good!
UConn is now 1 – 4 on the season with these games left to play…
At Memphis At South Florida UMass At Tulsa SMU At East Carolina Temple
…and we had to guess the Huskies will finish 2018 with a….
2 – 10 or 3 – 9
….record after Edsall went 3 – 9 last year at UConn.
Will Randy Edsall be allowed to continue to field football teams that win 3 games a season?
Not in our humble opinion.
5. Larry Fedora, North Carolina – In Larry Fedora’s last 20 games at North Carolina, after the loss to Miami this past week, he is sitting on a record of…
5 – 15
…and that is run of football that no coach can survive at a place like UNC where the expectations by us here at Coaches Hot Seat is…
7 to 8 wins a year
…and with the Tar Heels now at 1 – 3 on the season they still have to face in 2018:
Virginia Tech At Syracuse At Virginia Georgia Tech At Duke Western Carolina NC State
With a bye in Week 6 how many games might UNC win in 2018?
Our guess the Tar Heels will finish at…
2 – 9 or 3 – 8
…with the UCF game cancelled and only 11 games on the schedule and can Fedora survive two straight 3 win seasons in Chapel Hill?
We don’t think so.
6. Major Applewhite, Houston – Houston got their cupcake win on Saturday against Texas Southern to raise their record to 3 – 1 on the season and now Major Applewhite and his Cougars need to take care of business in the next two games that Houston should easily win against…
Tulsa At East Carolina
…so they are 5 – 1 headed into the last 6 games of…
At Navy South Florida At SMU Temple Tulane At Memphis
In our opinion if Major Applewhite does not win 9 games in the 2018 regular season his job will be in serious jeopardy so taking care of business the next 2 weeks and winning at least 4 of the last 6 games Houston has on the docket is CRITICAL!
Keep your focus on THIS WEEK Major!
7. Brent Brennan, San Jose State – Brent Brennan and San Jose State almost got their first win of the year on Saturday with a 5-overtime loss to Hawaii at home but alas it was another loss which drops Brennan’s records in his 2 nd season at the school to…
Overall: 2 – 15
MWC: 1 – 9
…and the Spartans still have left to play in 2018…
Colorado State Army At San Diego State UNLV At Wyoming At Utah State Nevada At Fresno State
Colorado State at home is a very winnable game for the Spartans but do we see San Jose State winning more than 2 games in 2018?
Nope…don’t think so….but we do have it on pretty decent authority that if Brennan can somehow find a way to win 4 of his team’s last 8 games he will return to coach San Jose State in 2019 but alas…another 2 win or worse season….it will be Dandy Don Time!
8. Bobby Petrino, Louisville – To truly understand why Bobby Petrino gave a away a sure-fire win over Florida State on Saturday….
Bobby Petrino is one of the Most Arrogant Asses on the Earth
….which is why Petrino called a pass play on 1 st down with the ball on the Florida State 20 yard line and 2 minutes left in the game and just for that decision alone…
Bobby Petrino should be fired
…and in our opinion Bobby Petrino will be fired later this year because the folks at Louisville are sick and tired of Bobby Petrino and want to fire Bobby Petrino and that incredibly stupid decision on Saturday against FSU just made the decision to fire Bobby Petrino all that more easy when it does come…and in our opinion it will come before December 1, 2018.
Bobby Petrino could have had all kinds of great jobs in his life…
Auburn, LSU, Hell…even Alabama was looking at Petrino at one time
….but he ended up at Arkansas and made it into the 2 nd best team in the SEC West behind Alabama but then we all know what happened with the blonde and the motorcycle and that happened for the same Damn reason that Bobby Petrino threw the ball on 1 st down late in the game against Florida State….
Bobby Petrino is one of the Most Arrogant Asses on the Earth
Louisville is now 2 – 3 on the season with games left against…
Georgia Tech At Boston College Wake Forest At Clemson At Syracuse NC State Kentucky
…and our guess is the Cardinals will finish with a record of…
4 – 8 or 5 – 7 or 6 – 6
…and the folks at Louisville will be looking for a new head football coach come December whatever the team’s final record is in 2018 and we will say this…
Louisville is a Helluva Coaching Job for the right coach!
9. Clay Helton, USC – USC looked Very Average to borderline in Total Chaos in beating a Very Average Arizona team on Saturday night and with that win the Trojans are now 3 – 2 on the season and Clay Helton with what we will call a…
Disgraceful Performance Against Arizona
….now have a week off to get things straightened out with Colorado coming to the LA Coliseum on Friday, October 12 in a game that USC just…
Flat-Out Cannot Lose
….because of what they have left on the schedule after the Buffaloes:
At Utah Arizona State At Oregon State California At UCLA Notre Dame
If USC loses to Colorado we see the Trojans finishing at…
7 – 5
…on the 2018 season and if Clay Helton wins less than 9 games this season he is going to be in Helluva tough spot come late November especially if the Irish lay a whipping on USC in the Coliseum on Friday, November 23 which would be a Total Explosion sending USC fans, alumni and boosters into a Total Meltdown that might see the Head Coach and AD shown the door in South LA!
10. Chip Kelly, UCLA – Check-out the numbers for Chip Kelly’s offense at UCLA this season…they are UGLY!
Scoring Offense = #120 – 17.3 points per game
Total Offense = #118 – 319.7 yards per game
Rushing Offense = #103 – 131.5 yards per game
Passing Offense = #108 – 176.5 yards per game
Completion Percentage = #108 – .541%
Third Down Conversion = #121 – .304%
First Down Offense = #128 – 64
The above is nothing short of a Total Freaking Disaster for Chip Kelly’s offense at UCLA and watching the UCLA – Colorado game on Friday night we did see some improvements but those 4 – 0 Buffs everyone is talking about….they have beaten 4 teams who have a combined record of…
1 – 16
…so playing well against Colorado….not a Big Whoop!
UCLA is now 0 – 4 on the season and after a bye week the Bruins have games left against…
Washington At California Arizona Utah At Oregon At Arizona State USC Stanford
Will UCLA win even ONE game in 2018?
In our opinion….NO!
The reality is the whiz-bang offense that Chip Kelly had at Oregon from 2009 – 2012 is now run widely across college football and teams know how to defend it and unless Kelly can come up with something new and quick…
The Jig Is Up on Chip Kelly’s Offense and he WILL NOT make it past Year 2 at UCLA!
For over a decade we have had a contact within the UCLA Athletic Department who has passed along info on the football programs coached by Karl Dorrell, Rick Neuheisel, Jim Mora, and now Chip Kelly and that person has not only been very reliable but we also have very diligent in using any of that information directly since it was info that was very closely held by a very few people in Westwood. We talked to our contact on Sunday about the current state of UCLA football program and our contact’s main takeaway was:
“The most successful coaches on any level teach the fundamentals.”
“No coach, no matter how successful, ever completely escapes the pressure of winning.”
“You don’t beat people with surprises, but with execution.”
“It bothers me that they (the national media) have picked us to be the worst team in football. Because what they are doing now is challenging your physical and your mental capacity and my ability to coach you. Now, this hurts me. Second worst team, I could stand it. But not the worst team.”
“Kickers are like horse manure. They’re all over the place.”
“Intensity is a lot of guys that run fast.”
“Emotion is highly overrated in football. My wife Corky is emotional as hell but can’t play football worth a damn.”
On his team’s blocking strategy: “Hold when you’re at home and don’t hold when you’re on the road.”
“If you have everyone back from a team that lost ten games, experience isn’t too important.”
On how coaching an expansion team is a religious experience: “You do a lot of praying, but most of the time the answer is ‘no.’ “
On the play of Joe Namath in the Jets 34-0 victory over Tampa Bay, “Namath is still Namath, but I must say that our guys were nice to him. I noticed when they knocked him down, they helped him to his feet. That was gentlemanly. I thought one stood around long enough to get his autograph.”
“I told our players that there were 700 million Chinese people in the world who didn’t even know the game was played. The next week, I got five letters from China asking “What happened?””
“Behind every fired football coach stands a college president.”
“Nobody becomes great without self-doubt. But you can’t let it consume you.”
“We didn’t tackle well today, but we made up for it by not blocking”.
“Three or four plane crashes and we’re in the playoffs.”
* On the execution of the Bucs offense: “I think it’s a good idea.”
“On the Bucs early games: “Every time I look up, it seems we’re punting.”
