"Covering College Football Coaching from Miami to Honolulu"

What is going on at Michigan, SMU, and UCLA?

One really has to wonder if the people running this coaching search at Michigan can do anything without it ending up on the front pages of every sports page in America?  Maybe Rich Rodriguez’s agent leaked the story on the meeting between Michigan officials and Rodriguez in Toledo yesterday, but clearly this is something that the people at Michigan should have been able to keep quiet.  This Michigan coaching search has been a disaster from the word go, and if Bill Martin had a clue he would have had a deal with Les Miles to become the next Michigan coach put together sometime before the LSU regular season ended.  Martin so botched everything leading up to the SEC Championship that Miles really only had once choice, to stay at LSU, and it is disgraceful, and embarrassing for that matter that Michigan cannot even land a guy in Miles that wanted the job desperately.  Forget the pleasantries!  This is big time college football not a game of tiddly-winks, and the Michigan people need to either get this search for a football coach in gear, or fire Martin and get someone in there that has a clue.

SMU – The Mustangs better be hiring a coach that has a team playing in bowl game, or this is going to turn into the stupidest move in the history of college coaching searches.  If the SMU AD has waited this long to hire a guy that has been available all of this this time, then you really you to question everything that is going on in the SMU athletic department.  Looking at coaches that have teams in bowl games the only coach that would make any sense is East Carolina’s Skip Holtz , but that is certainly not the type of hire that Orsini has made in the past.  If SMU is not planning on hiring a coach that has a team in a bowl game, then the coach should be hired today.  There is no reason to wait around and let recruiting get damaged any further, and everyday that passes makes us seriously question just what in the hell is going on in Dallas.  If Orsini cannot find a proven head coach, then he needs to hire a up-and-coming assistant like Southern Miss did with Larry Fedora.  Whatever they decide, they need to get off the dime and hire a football coach.

UCLA - This has been another coaching search full of leaks.  Next thing I am going to read in the LA papers is that Dan Guerrero has gone to the bathroom and on his way back to his office he took a call from another coach that wanted to talk about the UCLA job.  Are these LA reporters camped out in Guerrero’s office, or is there someone at UCLA who calls up these reporters every time someone makes a move on the coaching search front?  Why the people at UCLA feel the need to broadcast their every move is beyond us, but these are also the people that immediately eliminated from consideration the one and only guy that wants the job that also fits everything that Guerrero wants in a new head football coach.  That coach is Texas Tech’s Mike Leach.  We are not quite sure why Leach was removed from consideration so quickly, it could have been pressure from the Pac-10 office who hate Leach’s honesty, or it could have been that Guerrero doesn’t want a head football coach that will actually stand up and tell you what he is thinking.  As for the candidates that have been mentioned by the LA papers, DeWayne Walker, Norm Chow, and Rick Neuheisal, we cannot help but say, WHAT?  None of these guys remotely fit the parameters that Dan Guerrero outlined in the press conference after the firing of Karl Dorrell, and as for what the Champions across town at Heritage Hall think of the above 3 men…..Wait, the USC people are laughing hysterically as they imagine facing off with any of these guys in the coming years.  UCLA should be hiring a proven head coach that has won on the Division I-A level, and if they hire one of these other guys and it doesn’t work out, Dan Guerrero is going to find that no matter how many championships you pile up in other sports, no one gets a 3rd chance to hire a football coach.  We will be watching with great interest the rest of this UCLA coaching search, because up to this point it has been a great disappointment.

3 jobs remain open:  Michigan, UCLA, and SMU.  If these schools are planning on hiring a coach that is not coaching in a bowl game, then they should do it quickly.  If they have a bowl game coach in mind, they should zip it up and quit allowing so many leaks to the media.  Last year, after the deal between Alabama and Rich Rodriguez blew up, the people in power at Alabama decided to lock down the leaks out of the athletic department, and it wasn’t until the Alabama AD Mal Moore showed up in Miami to pick up Nick Saban that a word was said by anyone at Alabama about who they were going after.  Everyone thought it was Saban, but no one at Alabama was saying that, and these other schools need to heed that advice if they are waiting for a bowl game to be played, and if they are not, then they need to get a head coach hired.  Time’s a Wasting sang Johnny Cash, which is quickly becoming the theme song for the UCLA, SMU, and Michigan athletic departments!
