QB Peter Laliich and Why the University of Virginia IS the University of Virginia

There are very few times in our society today when right wins out over expediency, when principles trump the “easy thing to do,” or when the standards of an institution are held up as more important than the selfish actions of an individual, but all of those things happened this week with the removal of QB Peter Lalich from the Virginia football team. Yesterday, after Peter Lalich admitted to a local court in Charlottesville that he had violated the terms of his probation related to an original charge of underage drinking, UVA athletic director Craig Littlepage removed Lalich from the Cavalier football team and stood up for the principles of the University of Virginia at the same time. In this age of student-athletes being able to commit all kinds of criminal behavior and receive little or next to no punishment for their actions, what a refreshing change that the University of Virginia believe its standards for behavior and conduct trump the bad actions of its students, even if that student happens to be the starting quarterback on the football team.

Just in the past week there have been reports of DUI arrests at Ole Miss and the University of Wisconsin with the punishment ranging from basically nothing (internal punishment with no suspension) at Wisconsin to a 1 game suspension at Ole Miss, and we wonder just what in the hell our athletic administrators are thinking with these very light punishments. What a contrast between the universities of Wisconsin and Mississippi and the University of Virginia, where a student-athlete can only be caught lying to university officials about violating the terms of probation by drinking alcohol and be thrown off the football team, and at those other schools the student-athletes can actually get drunk and get into a car (or a moped!), put other people’s lives in danger, get arrested, and basically receive no real punishment. Just absolutely outrageous, but absolutely outrageous and the standards for our student-athletes’ behavior has sunk to such a low, that no one hardly even notices or cares anymore when our young adults break the law and just get a slap on the wrist. “Internal punishment” or a 1 game suspension is not a real punishment when a student-athlete gets into a car drunk and puts the lives of the community into danger, and student-athletes at both Wisconsin and Mississippi can be assured that they can go out and get drunk and then drive drunk and be in no danger of being removed from their sports team. One wonders what the punishment would be at Wisconsin and Mississippi if a student-athlete got into a car drunk and killed a local citizen or university student. Would the punishment then be 2 games held out of play or extra conditioning? One can only wonder, because the standard is now set so low for student-athletes that put the community and themselves into danger, that for all intense purposes there is no punishment at most schools for even very dangerous behavior, and that is a sad commentary on the condition of our Republic at the university level. (It is our opinion here at Coaches Hot Seat that a DUI/DWI should be followed by at a minimum with a 1 year suspension from a sports team for a collegiate student-athlete, because that is the type of real punishment that would send a clear message to our collegiate athletes that putting our communities in danger will not be tolerated. 1 game suspension or “internal punishment for a DUI? Please, that is not real punishment for a very serious crime, and our collegiate athletic departments better get serious about this issue, or we here at Coaches Hot Seat will get very serious about this issue and make sure that both coaches and athletic administrators are held accountable for their student-athletes’ behavior.)

The University of Virginia is a very unique institution and it draws its strength from its founder, Thomas Jefferson, who wrote to a friend when considering the establishment of UVA:

“We wish to establish in the upper country of Virginia, and more centrally for the State, a University on a plan so broad and liberal and modern, as to be worth patronizing with the public support, and be a temptation to the youth of other States to come and drink of the cup of knowledge and fraternize with us.”

We can only wish that we could be transported back to the inaugural banquet for the University of Virginia that was attended by James Madison and Marquis de Lafayette when it became clear that UVA would be a much different institution than other colleges of higher learning in our country at that time and would be as Jefferson explained:

“This institution will be based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind. For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.”

Those are the words of a man that recognizes the true worth of a solid education, and when we read something like that, it is no surprise that the same man would have been the author of our Declaration of Independence.

By removing Peter Lalich from the Virginia football team, the university and its athletic department stood up for and defended UVA’s Honor Code which clearly states that lying is something that will not be accepted at the University of Virginia. Maybe it is a trivial idea that a student-athlete lying to university officials is a serious issue, and with student-athletes putting communities in real danger with drunk driving and receiving basically no real punishment, we can see why people would think that way, but the University of Virginia is a different type of institution and no doubt somewhere right now Thomas Jefferson is smiling and happy that UVA officials stood up for what is right.

That Virginia was willing to stand on principle and toss the starting quarterback off of its football team for violating the basic standards of the university is why the University of Virginia IS the University of Virginia. While other schools excuse or alibi the improper behavior of their student-athletes, there are still standards in Charlottesville and that would certainly make Mr. Jefferson very proud.

Sidenote: We certainly hope that Peter Lalich learns from his mistakes and from this adversity and that after sitting out for an entire football season that he comes back and redeems himself at Virgina if the university will allow him to return to the team. Whatever happens at Virginia, it is important that Peter Lalich work hard at his very young age to come roaring back and prove that he get off the mat and be both a great student and football player.
