The Phil Fulmer 8 Point Full-Employment Plan IF He Wants to Keep His Job
Yes, Phil Fulmer is in deep trouble at Tennessee and even with a $6 million dollar buyout he is in grave danger of losing his head coaching job unless he can turnaround this season in a very dramatic fashion. For all those Tennessee fans that have written to us over the past 18 months and recommended we put Fulmer in the No. 1 Hot Seat, we certainly understand your pain, but if Fulmer and the Vols can get their act together Phillip might just get another few years on the sidelines in Knoxville.
With that idea mind, we here at Coaches Hot Seat have come up with the following The Phil Fulmer 8 Point Full-Employment Plan that he must execute flawlessly if he hopes to be wearing headphones on the Tennessee sideline in 2009.
The Phil Fulmer 8 Point Full-Employment Plan to Keep His Job:
1. Beat Northern Illinois. This is a must, because if Tennessee cannot beat NIU in Neyland Stadium, Fulmer should be fired on Saturday night after the game. Tennessee’s record after NIU game with a win: 2-3
2. Play Georgia tough. A win against Georgia is not a necessity, but after Alabama went into Athens and whipped up on the Bulldogs, if the Vols were not able to keep the game close or beat Georgia then there would certainly be more questions raised about Fulmer’s ability to lead the Tennessee football program. Tennessee’s record assuming a loss to Georgia: 2-4
3. Beat Mississippi State. So far in 2008 Mississippi State has been woeful except for a little sign of life against LSU last week, and if Tennessee plays Tennessee football they should be able to handle the Bulldogs in Neyland Stadium. Tennessee’s record with a win over Mississippi State: 3-4
4. Play Alabama tough. Alabama shows up in Knoxville not on the traditional “Third Saturday in October,” but a week later and this will be a critical game for Phil Fulmer if he hopes to hang onto his job. Tennessee fans really hate losing to Bama, but they really, really hate getting whipped by the Tide as they did in ’07. Fulmer and the Vols must play Alabama tough and Fulmer must especially prove in this game that it is not possible for a coach (Saban) in his second year at Alabama after taking over a very down program to be able to come out of the shoot and beat Tennessee in his first two tries. With Fulmer now in his sixteenth year at Tennessee, if he did lose to Saban in his first two years at Alabama, a very good argument could be made that the Tennessee football program is now going backwards. Tennessee must play Alabama tough, but a win is not a necessity. Tennessee’s record with a loss to Alabama: 3-5
5. Beat South Carolina in Columbia. This game against Spurrier and the Gamecocks on November 1 is the critical game on Tennessee’s schedule and this is game that Phil Fulmer CANNOT lose if he wants to return in 2009. One would think that Spurrier will have his offense going by this time in the season so the Vols defense is really going to have to step up in this game and certainly the Tennessee offense will be called on to score a lot of points as well. Beating South Carolina is a MUST WIN for Phil Fulmer. Tennessee’s record assuming a win over South Carolina: 4-5
6. Beat Wyoming at home. Wyoming head coach Joe Glenn may well be on his last legs when he arrives in Knoxville on November 8 and this game will be a great opportunity for Fulmer and the Vols to build some momentum for the rest of the ’08 season. Even with the recruiting down some for Tennessee in recent years, the Vols have 3 to 4 times as much talent as Wyoming and they should win this game at home convincingly. Beating Wyoming is a MUST WIN for Phil Fulmer. Tennessee’s record assuming a win over Wyoming: 5-5
7. Beat Vanderbilt. If Fulmer and the Vols can beat Spurrier and South Carolina on the road then the next critical road game will be against Vanderbilt on November 22. It is not that Vandy is a whole lot better this year than in recent years, just that they have gotten a few more breaks and they are making a lot fewer mistakes, and luck + fewer mistakes always adds up to a lot of wins if you have quality coaching. Vandy has quality coaching with Bobby Johnson at the helm, and if Tennessee and Fulmer really want to return to what Tennessee football used to be about, the Vols should be able to go into Nashville and lay a whipping on the ‘Dores. More than likely though this will be a very close game and if Fulmer wants to keep the Phillip Fulmer train rolling he MUST beat Vanderbilt in this spot. Tennessee record assuming a win over Vanderbilt: 6-5
8. Beat Kentucky. If somehow Phil Fulmer can navigate his way to a 6-5 record after the Vanderbilt game then he will enter the game against Kentucky at home with a big pile of chips at the center of the table and this will be the ultimate either win or go home showdown for Phil Fulmer and his future. Kentucky is much improved in recent years under Rich Brooks, but the ‘Cats still have problems going on the road and winning football games in the conference, and this is the type of game that a Tennessee football program that is playing “its” game should win 95 times out of 100. In what should be a very close game, we will give a win to Fulmer in this spot which if everything we have written about happens, would give the Phil and the Vols a 7-5 record in 2008.
If Phil Fulmer can get to a 7-5 record in 2008 we believe that a majority of fans would still be calling for a coaching change, but that Phil would be able to rally the “Fat Cats” around the Tennessee football program that seem to rather enjoy mediocrity in Vols football, but really enjoy what they perceive as “inside access” to the Vols football program, when in reality they are just getting their ass kissed so Tennessee can get their money. Yes, 7-5 would get Phil Fulmer another year, but 6-6 or worse will get Fulmer fired even with a reported $6 million dollar buyout. The state of Tennessee has a population of approximately 6 million people and by our conservative estimate there are 2.5 million “very strong and committed” Tennessee fans in the state and around the US. If those 2.5 million “very strong and committed” Tennessee fans donated $2.40 each to the athletics department at UT, the buyout issue would be solved. Neyland Stadium holds approximately 107,000 people, and if those 107,000 people donated $56 dollars each to UT athletics, the buyout would be done. $6 million dollars is a lot of money, but spread across the entire Tennessee football nation it is a drop in the bucket. Let us say at this point that Phil Fulmer certainly deserves to receive a large buyout for the 40 or so years that he has spent at Tennessee trying to build the football program, and even though a $6 million dollar buyout is a little excessive, it is not an inappropriate amount of money for Phil Fulmer to receive for his efforts. We only hope that Fulmer has made sure that his assistants also have contracts in place that will protect them for at least a year after getting fired so that they will either be able to move into retirement or find another job. There are some very good football coaches on the Tennessee staff, and most if not all will quickly find work, although with $6 million dollars in his pocket we expect that Fulmer will be on a lake fishing somewhere, or maybe even in a TV booth doing commentary next season. After the last few years, Phil Fulmer might rather enjoy working one day a week telling other people what they are doing wrong.
The very simple equation here is that unless the Tennessee offense gets a lot better in the coming weeks there will be no chance that Fulmer and the Vols will be able to go on the road and win games in the SEC. With 3 SEC road games left, and Alabama and Kentucky at home we would put the chances of Phil Fulmer and Tennessee getting to a 7-5 record in ’08 at no better than 50/50.
