Paul Newman Said It Best….“If you’re play a poker game and you look around the table and can’t tell who the sucker is, it’s you.”…and That Is the TRUTH About the SUCKERS That Are Allowing OUR Schools and Student-Athletes To Get Royally Ripped-Off With the Current College Football Postseason – Cue the Church Lady! – Hell, As Capitalists If We Were Making A Fortune Ripping Off SUCKERS We Would Be Writing “Bowls Are Fun” Too….Just As Pravda Praised Lenin and Stalin For Decades! – The Greatest Fear of the Folks That Now Televise the College Football Postseason: The SUCKERS Might Wise Up and Quit Allowing OUR Schools and Student-Athletes To Get Royally Ripped Off….But That Would Take People With Working Common Sense IQs Over Room Temperature Combined With Non-Candy Asses That Actually Believe in the Principles That the American Republic Was Founded Upon….Which Is Not Something That Is Easy To Find on America’s College Campuses Where the Bogus “Everyone’s A Winner” and “Give Everyone A Trophy” Theories Dominate In the Land of the Candy Asses and the 8 Hour Work Week (4 Hours Teaching in the Classroom and 4 Hours Grading Papers….Oh, That Is Some Tough Work!)
Before we get to today’s blog post we must remind everyone that….
Alabama has not played a football game since November 26 or 31 days ago
LSU has not played a football game since December 3 or 24 days ago
AND
It is still 13 more days until the Bogus BCS title game.
That means that Alabama and LSU will have the following number of days between their last regular season/championship game and the Bogus BCS title game:
Alabama – 44 days
LSU – 37 days
Do you think it makes any Damn sense at all for there to be 44 and 37 days between the end of the regular/championship season and the Bogus BCS title FOOTBALL game?
If you answered “Yes” to the above question then you are a Complete and Total Idiot, but then there are lots of Complete and Total Idiots running around today that are costing Intercollegiate Athletics Billions of Dollars and all in the name of making a very small group of Sorry Bastards very wealthy and for what exactly?
A bunch of Meaningless Exhibition Games and a Bogus title game?
Like that Completely MEANINGLESS Game last week between Boise State and Arizona State?
What was the point of Boise State playing Arizona State?
Oh, so that a few people could make lots of money putting on an exhibition football game, a few hotel rooms could be filled up, a few more chicken dinners could be sold and since that was Vegas a few more hands of blackjack could be played.
That’s the REAL and BOGUS reason why Boise State played Arizona State in a MEANINGLESS Exhibition Game instead of having the shot to play for a REAL National Championship in Major College Football and now the Broncos wake up this week and realize that Boise State’s Chris Petersen has won…
73 games over the past 6 seasons
AND
Kellen Moore as the QB of Boise State had won…
50 games over the past 4 seasons
And Boise State never got a chance to play for a the National Championship in Major College Football.
That could only make sense with a college football postseason that was run by the Biggest Group of Candy Asses that ever walked on Planet Earth and that is exactly the case here.
Yes, PT Barnum was right….
“A Sucker is Born Every Minute”
AND
The Idiots running College Football are the Biggest SUCKERS of all!
There’s a saying by the Great Paul Newman that seems very apt since we are in the middle of the college bowl season otherwise known in most of America as the…
“Let’s give everyone a trophy to make them feel good and pretend like a bunch of meaningless exhibition games actually mean something when they mean NOTHING AT ALL.”
….that goes something like this:
“If you’re play a poker game and you look around the table and can’t tell who the sucker is, it’s you.”
With that Newman quote in mind we were fascinated to see Multichannel.com moved the following story last week:
Burke Mangus Bullish on BCS Games as ESPN Kicks Off Bowl Season, Multichannel.com
“For ESPN, tis the season for college bowl game watching.
Over the course, the ESPN family of networks will air 33 of the 35 bowls (CBS has the Sun Bowl, Fox the Cotton), capped off by the five BCS contests. The action kicks off Dec. 17 with a trio of games — Wyoming and Temple in the New Mexico Bowl on ESPN at 2 p.m., Utah State and Ohio in the Famous Idaho Potato at 5:30 p.m. and La.-Lafayette and San Diego State in the New Orleans Bowl at 9 p.m. – and culminates with the national championship game between LSU and Alabama on Jan. 9,
Coupled with Monday Night Football, the bowl games have historically made December ESPN’s top-rated month.
‘Bowl Week’ has morphed into’ Bowl Season.’ Generally, this is our high-rated time of year,” said ESPN senior vice president of college sports programming Burke Magnus.”
As the Saturday Night Live Churchlady would have said:
“Isn’t that special?”
Well, it’s “special” alright…unless YOU are the SUCKER at the table and there most certainly is a BIG SUCKER at the table that actually believes he is making out BIG TIME….BUT….is actually getting Ripped-Off BIG TIME!
Keeping in mind….
Paul Newman and the sucker at the table
AND
The Churchlady
AND
Burke Mangus, VP of college sports programming
Let’s move on to an AdWeek.com story that was also moved last week that provides a very revealing glimpse into the worlds of college football, the college football postseason and the SUCKER…make that SUCKERS….at the table. Oh, this gets very Damn interesting.
Bowling Them Over: BCS Has ESPN Seeing Green ($$$$$$$$$$$$$) Sales, Anthony Crupi, AdWeek.com
“Because the title sponsors are allotted between eight and 10 spots in their showcase games, inventory in the early bowl games is artificially tightened. Spots went particularly fast in this year’s upfront, as ESPN aggressively positioned college football as an alternative to an endangered National Football League season.
The strategy paid off. By August, Ed Erhardt, ESPN’s president of customer marketing and sales, had sold out almost all available spots in the baby bowls and the five BCS games (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, and the National Championship Game).
While there are scores of floridly titled small-conference games to wade through before the BCS bowls—Tuesday night’s Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl pairs Florida International and Marshall—all that inventory adds up rather nicely for ESPN. According to agency estimates, ESPN last year raked in more than $325 million in total bowl game ad sales revenue.”
What the Hell?
“ESPN last year raked in more than $325 in total bowl game ad sales revenue?”
Cue the Churchlady…..”Isn’t that special?”
Oh, but there’s more from the AdWeek.com story Churchlady:
“Naturally, the real money starts rolling in after New Year’s Day. Last year’s Rose Bowl contest delivered 20.6 million viewers, while Auburn’s 22-19 win over Oregon in the Jan. 10 BCS title game delivered a cable-record 27.3 million viewers. According to Kantar Media estimates, a :30 in the national championship broadcast can run as much as $1.15 million a pop; a spot in one of the lead-in bowls costs around $670,000.”
What the Hell?
“$1.15 million dollars a pop for a .30 second spot in the Bogus BCS title game?”
How much was it that the conferences and thus OUR schools and athletic departments are getting for the college football postseason and Bogus BCS games?
About $180 Million Dollars TOTAL or so? Yes, that’s right, but that $180 Million Dollars is a “gross” number and does not include the REAL costs that are associated that comes with OUR college football teams having the “right” to play in these Meaningless Exhibition Games called “bowls” which total for all the bowl schools once one adds up game tickets, airfare, hotel rooms, meals and various other things that are often REQUIRED to be purchased by OUR schools, athletic departments and schools when they have the “right” to play in a Meaningless Exhibition Game runs around (See Clemson Tigers projected to lose $185K at Orange Bowl, Post and Courier):
“Regular” Bowls = $15 Million Dollars
“BCS” Bowls = $25 Million Dollars
Total Expenses to play in the Meaningless Exhibition Games: $40 Million Dollars
Net amount to the schools minus Total Expenses: $140 Million Dollars
Or rather about….
$1.8 Million Dollars PER TEAM for the biggest 70 or so I-A college football programs
AND
$25 Thousand Dollars PER TEAM for the smaller 50 or so I-A college football programs
What was that Paul Newman quote again you ask?
“If you’re play a poker game and you look around the table and can’t tell who the sucker is, it’s you.”
By now the more intelligent people reading this blog KNOW who the SUCKERS are when it comes to Intercollegiate Athletics, the college football postseason and the Bogus and Un-American BCS
The SUCKERS are the conference commissioners, college presidents and athletic directors that are allowing OUR schools, athletic departments and college football teams to get ROYALLY Ripped-Off by the media companies because the current college football postseason delivers BIG profits to ESPN only counting only ad and sponsorship sales….and not counting the subscription fees paid by cable and satellite TV subscribers….and the SUCKERS that are supposed to working in the best interests of and representing OUR schools, athletic departments and college football teams don’t even know they are the SUCKERS because they are too busy partying down while in the privacy of their offices the cable and network executives know they have some BIG TIME Morons, Buffoons and Fools at the table and their most sincere hope is that they can keep the Morons, Buffoons and Fools at the table for as long as Damn possible (Let’s leave the Sorry Ass bowl executives at the side of the road right now that also bank lots of Damn money from the SUCKERS because the SUCKERS are so stupid they that they hand over the postseason of college football to people that don’t give a Damn about college football except that OUR student-athletes makes them lots of money so they will of course kiss the asses of the SUCKERS as much as possible so the SUCKERS will go into the tank for them and cost Intercollegiate Athletics Billions of Dollars. Yes, these SUCKERS are Very Stupid People….BUT….not as Stupid as the current Members of the US Congress that believe passing two-month tax bills makes sense which is even Stupider than the current college football postseason)
Before we get into just how much Damn money that ESPN is making off of the SUCKERS which would be our schools represented by the conference commissioners, college presidents and athletic directors we believe this would be a good time to look at what the differences are between what the SUCKERS have been able to get for OUR schools, athletic departments and college football teams in the current college football postseason…..
Net $140 Million Dollars each year
…and what a College Football Postseason would generate if it used the SAME DAMN postseason tournament that is used by EVERY other sport in Intercollegiate Athletics (from the Coaches Hot Seat Blog, December 16, 2011):
Conference – $ Millions of Dollars
SEC Conference – $180 Million
Big 12 Conference – $125 Million
Big Ten Conference – $120 Million
Pac-12 Conference – $90 Million
ACC Conference – $75 Million
MWC Conference – $60 Million
C-USA Conference – $40 Million
MAC Conference – $37.5 Million
Big East Conference – $30 Million
WAC Conference – $30 Million
Sun Belt Conference – $27.5 Million
Independents – $10 Million (BYU, Notre Dame, Army, Navy)
Yes, that’s right.
The SEC Conference by itself would make more in 2011 than what ALL the college football programs combined will make off of this year’s college football postseason if there was a Postseason Tournament in I-A College Football and that makes the SUCKERS at the table, the conference commissioners, the college presidents and the athletic directors some of the Biggest SUCKERS in the history of media negotiations and no Damn wonder we get headlines like this one from ESPN’s Ivan Maisel this week:
3-point stance: Why bowls are fun
Yes, “bowls are fun” alright….For ESPN which is Ivan Maisel’s employer so of course Ivan Maisel just like a reporter or columnist for Pravda which was the newspaper of record for the Soviet Union before the U.S.S.R. came crashing down will write “positive” things about the bowls because the bowls are making ESPN lots of Damn money while also Ripping Off Intercollegiate Athletics to the tune of Hundreds of Millions of Dollars EACH and EVERY YEAR! (Our media exec buddies in Los Angeles tell us that one of the greatest fears of the folks at the Mouse House is that the SUCKERS, the conference commissioners, college presidents and athletic directors, might just wise up one day and put into place the same postseason as EVERY other sport in Intercollegiate Athletics and that will in turn cost ESPN a Helluva lot more money because one thing that has been skyrocketing in cost in recent years is the rights to televise sporting contests (see the recent NFL contract which increased by 60 percent over the last contract) except of course with the college football postseason which is the Biggest Rip-Off in American sports with the SUCKERS getting taken to the cleaners while their Stupidity is costing Intercollegiate Athletics Billions of Dollars. Two Cheers from the Mouse House in hopes that SUCKERS remain Very Stupid People!)
Now, to completely understand how ESPN makes its money one must look beyond just advertising sales for their channels around bowl games but to the Really BIG Enchilada which the above AdWeek.com story lays out with some eye-popping numbers:
“ESPN owns the rights for the BCS through 2014. Along with the ad dollars that accrue to this sort of live-viewing ratings juggernaut, the event programming allows the network to justify its carriage fee.
In exchange for its broadcast feed and high-def simulcast, Bristol charges cable and satellite operators an average of $4.69 a month per subscriber, according to SNL Kagan data. Multiply that by 99 million subscribers, over 12 months, and ESPN’s annual affiliate revenue haul works out to be $5.57 billion. To throw that into greater relief, note that ESPN’s subscriber revenue is roughly 36 percent of CBS Corp.’s market cap ($15.6 billion, as of Dec. 6).”
“ESPN makes $5.57 Billion Dollars” from all of our subscriber fees which we pay for in our cable and satellite TV bills?
Well, good for ESPN because that is one Helluva business model they have going there which includes both ad revenue and subscriber fees which is what Capitalism is really all about, delivering a quality product that people are willing to pay their hard-earned money for and in the case of ESPN they do a very good job of delivering on their goal of covering sports in a comprehensive way in the United States and around the world.
With John Skipper moving up to run ESPN and Bob Iger’s steady leadership at Disney after the chaotic years of Michael Eisner and Michael’s BIG ego we fully expect things to continue to go well for the Walt Disney Company and ESPN into the coming years, but as is the case with anyone that does business in America it is Very Damn Important that people on both sides of negotiating table be well versed in the principles of Capitalism and right now ESPN/Disney are wiping the floor of the SUCKERS otherwise known as the conference commissioners, college presidents and athletic directors that are letting OUR schools get ROYALLY Ripped-Off and what makes this particular case so Damn pitiful is that the REAL Capitalists (ESPN/Disney) are doing business with Clueless Academic Morons and the Clueless Academic Morons actually believe they are the ones on the good side of the deal.
Yes, as Paul Newman said in The Sting: “This is the perfect con.”
Please to the SUCKERS….ake the Hell Up!
Getting back to college football and the SUCKERS at the table it is not all that hard to come up with just how much ESPN is making off of the game of college football after all of its expenses are calculated in and with the help of one of our media buddies we came up with the following very interesting numbers on ESPN’s revenues, expenses and profit on college football:
All of the below is OUR opinion and best guesses by the way and since this is America we can freely express our opinion…..
ESPN’s College Football Expenses
Conference TV Rights: $600 Million Dollars annually
Postseason TV Rights: $175 Million Dollars annually
Cost to Televise College Football: $525 Million Dollars annually
ESPN’s Total College Football Investment: $1.3 Billion Dollars
ESPN’s College Football Revenues
Regular Season Advertising/Sponsorship Revenue: $450 Million Dollars annually
Postseason Advertising/Sponsorship Revenue: $400 Million Dollars annually
Subscriber Revenue % College Football: $1.250 Billion Dollars
ESPN’s Total College Football Revenues: $2.1 Billion Dollars
ESPN’s Total Profit on College Football: $800 Million Dollars
Cue the Churchlady….
“Isn’t that special?”
So, ESPN invests around $1.3 Billion Dollars in College Football and generates about $2.1 Billion Dollars for a $800 Million Dollar Profit which brings to mind that Paul Newman quote again….
“If you’re play a poker game and you look around the table and can’t tell who the sucker is, it’s you.”
It is OUR opinion here at Coaches Hot Seat that when taking into account the CURRENT college football regular and Bogus postseason that the SUCKERS (the conference commissioners, college presidents and athletic directors of OUR schools) are leaving at least $400 Million Dollars on the table each year because ESPN would be very happy to make half of what we estimate they are making which would still produce a…
38 percent profit on invested capital
..instead of the…
76 percent profit on invested capital
…that ESPN is now banking because of SUCKERS at the table are getting massively Ripped Off because they don’t have a clue to what ESPN is making on the back of OUR student-athletes and thus why ESPN is more than Damn happy to hear college presidents sing the praises of the current college football postseason since a move to a Postseason Tournament would bring 3 other large media companies to the table which would pay BIG-TIME money to try and win the TV rights to that Postseason Tournament for I-A College Football and end the cushy and very profitable deal that ESPN now has going on against the SUCKERS at the table which in reality is off the backs of OUR schools and student-athletes! (And don’t forget the $200 Million Dollars or so the bowl themselves are SUCKING out of the game of college football which should be going to OUR student-athletes and OUR schools but are being banked by some Sorry Ass bowl executives that in our opinion don’t give Two Rips about college football except in finding ways that college football can make them very rich putting one event a year!)
What does all of the above mean?
Well, right now OUR schools are being paid by ESPN about….
$775 Million Dollars annually
…and that could easily be….
$1.175 Billion Dollars annually
…or $400 Million Dollars more each year under the CURRENT college football regular and postseason and ESPN would still be making Damn good money off of the game of college football.
(Yes, commish Mike Slive and the SEC should be getting more than their current $150 Million Dollars annually from ESPN and if Mike called us up today and asked what a 14 Team SEC that now includes Texas A&M and Missouri is worth to ESPN and what ESPN could pay and still make lots of Damn money on we would put that number around $225 Million Dollars annually with 5 percent increases every year into the future. Also the CBS deal with the SEC could use some work and of course as we have said in this blog many times it makes NO Damn sense for the SEC Conference not to have its own Conference Network and own channel where we in the Western United States could tune into SEC news and sporting events around the clock and where just like the Big Ten Network the academic sides of the schools in the SEC could promote their institutions beyond just their sports teams. The NO-Brainer of all-time is for the SEC to start its own network with its own channel in partnership with ESPN which could make a fortune selling advertising (and gaining new subscriptions if the SEC Network was on the right cable and satellite TV tier package) around since the SEC fans are huge sports fans even beyond the game of football.)
Now if one assumes that college football wasn’t run by a bunch of Candy Ass Pussies and we as REAL Americans actually settled the National Championship in college football on the Field of Play instead of with the Bogus and Un-American BCS the days of ESPN Royally Ripping-Off OUR schools, athletic departments and college football teams would be brought to a quick and decisive end because there would be 3 very large media companies that ALL now have integrated TV network and cable operations involved in the bidding process that would be able to generate Hundreds of Millions of Dollars in ad and sponsorship sales around the kind of Postseason Tournament that is used by EVERY other sport in Intercollegiate Athletics which would instead of generating as the current Bogus College Football Postseason does….
Net $140 Million Dollars each year
These kinds of Dollars for OUR schools:
Conference – $ Millions of Dollars
SEC Conference – $180 Million
Big 12 Conference – $125 Million
Big Ten Conference – $120 Million
Pac-12 Conference – $90 Million
ACC Conference – $75 Million
MWC Conference – $60 Million
C-USA Conference – $40 Million
MAC Conference – $37.5 Million
Big East Conference – $30 Million
WAC Conference – $30 Million
Sun Belt Conference – $27.5 Million
Independents – $10 Million (BYU, Notre Dame, Army, Navy)
And more importantly since this is America….right?
Settle the National Championship in I-A football on the Field of Play and end the Complete Stupidity of teams taking off 30 Plus Days between the end of the regular season and the current Bogus title game.
Yes, it does take a REAL Moron to continue to support the current college football postseason and Bogus and Un-American BCS but then the REAL Morons that are cutting these deals with ESPN and other media companies are the SUCKERS at the table that Paul Newman warned people about and the reality is the SUCKERS don’t know they are the SUCKERS because they don’t have the Common Sense to look around the table and figure out they are the SUCKERS and that Stupidity is Right Damn Now costing OUR conferences, schools, athletic departments, college football teams and student-athletes Hundreds of Millions of Dollars each and every year.
Now, let’s again assume that college football wasn’t run by a bunch of Candy Ass Pussies and we would have just had Week 2 or the Second Round of a 16-Team Postseason Tournament and we would be entering Week 3 and if the Coaches Hot Seat Postseason Playoff Tournament had played out as we expected to play out the following games would have been played this past Saturday:
Second Round Games, Saturday, December 24, 2011
Baton Rouge
Oregon vs. LSU
——————————–
Madison, Wisconsin
Kansas State vs. Wisconsin
——————————–
Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Stanford vs. Alabama
——————————–
Stillwater, Oklahoma
Arkansas vs. Oklahoma State
Now those are some Damn Great Football Games!
What bowl game was being played this past Saturday?
Nevada vs. Southern Miss at the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
Yes, “bowls are fun” alright and if there is anyone that would take Nevada vs. Southern Miss over the 4 GREAT Football Games of the Second Round of a 16-Team Postseason Tournament that would be played on the College Campuses and would be filling up College Stadiums and generating Hundreds of Millions of Dollars for College Communities instead of for these Sorry Bowl Bastards which makes the “bowls are fun” supporters either BIG Idiots or they are making a Bloody Fortune at the expense of OUR schools, athletic departments, college football teams and student-athletes!
Yes, there is a Very Good Reason why in sports leagues across America that parents, coaches and others that loves sports in America do not pair together mediocre teams to play in meaningless contests in the postseason and that Very Good Reason is that anyone with an IQ over room temperature knows that rewarding Mediocrity in our young people only reinforces the idea that Mediocrity is something that should be celebrated and rewarded and that is the Very Good Reason that “bowl games” do not exist in 99.99999999 percent of American sports.
WINNING Championships is what America is about and that is how America became a GREAT country and Republic because it was by Americans WINNING the Revolutionary War that made the future of the American Republic possible and the existence of America over the past two-plus centuries changed the world for the better and that would not have been possible if not for Americans WINNING our own Revolution, our own Freedom and thus the ability to determine our own future.
Playing Meaningless Exhibition Games that Mean NOTHING AT ALL and not settling the National Championship on the Field of Play in Major College Football as EVERY other sport in America settles its Champions runs directly counter to the Principles that the American Republic were founded upon, but even worse is this idea that is increasingly taking hold in America that mediocrity and being average is something that should be rewarded because doing so might create some kind of “memory” which is the deluded foundation of the “trophy for every person” crowd that deep down are scared of labeling people as “Winners” or “Losers” because as Candy Asses their fragile psyches cannot deal with someone not being told he or she is a “winner.”
The above kind of attitude is the end of America. When Americans quit recognizing and rewarding “excellence” but instead reward everyone no matter how pitiful, average or mediocre their performance and all in the name of making sure that “everyone feels like a winner.”
If you believe in that making “everyone feels like a winner” crowd go ahead and mark yourself down as a destroyer of the American Republic and kiss your children and grandchildren’s futures goodbye because that is only a skip away from the Candy Asses in Europe that are seeing their countries crumble before their eyes as they have increasingly have been turned from functioning nations full of people living meaningful lives to nothing but glorified theme parks that come to a grinding halt economically when the tourism dollars decrease just a little as is happening in Europe right now.
If you like the socialism and Idiocy of Europe then you should love the “everyone’s a winner” college football postseason which is interestingly and not surprisingly propped up by the Biggest Candy Asses in America today and of course in the shadows a few capitalists that are making a fortune off of the Candy Asses….the SUCKERS….and laughing like crazy as they RIP-OFF our college and universities and then those same capitalists have their media folks write things like….”bowls are fun.”
Yes, “bowls are Very Damn Fun” for people that are making a Fortune and ripping off a bunch of…
SUCKERS!
