Coaches Hot Seat Analysis: We still have to say it a few times to really believe it….
Texas A&M is in the SEC
Texas A&M is in the SEC
Texas A&M is in the SEC
…and even then it sounds odd…..BUT….it is Oh So RIGHT!
A few years ago (during the Dennis Franchione was the head coach years at A&M) a couple of us here at Coaches Hot Seat were in Houston on business and a Texas A&M alum friend of ours that was and still is in the “oil bidness” took us to dinner in one of those Houston, Texas steak houses where the lights are low, the steaks are thick, the beer is cold and MEN can be MEN.
The Texas A&M alum friend of ours waved off the menu from the maitre de and said he knew what we were going to have as our friend asked us as we sat down….
“What will it be boys…Rib-Eye, New York, Filet Mignon or T-Bone?”
….to which we could only reply to by saying…
“T-Bone!”
With that our A&M friend told the waiter to bring “ Make that three T-Bones medium-rare, baked potatoes and some cold Sam Adams beer for my friends and my usual (Maker’s Mark along with a cold Budweiser in the bottle!)”
Yes, that was a memorable dinner in Houston and continued on until later that night when our A&M friend’s smoking hot wife strolled out onto the pool deck of their house where we had adjourned after dinner to drink adult beverages and smoke cigars with his smoking hot wife saying….
“Isn’t it about time you came to bed honey?”
….but not before earlier in the evening on that pool deck when our A&M friend said something that stopped us cold as we were discussing how tough Big 12 football really was compared to the Pac-10….
“Maybe the Big 12 is better than the Pac-10 and maybe it isn’t….but one thing for sure…..this Aggie wishes that we were in the SEC.”
What the Hell?
After our A&M friend left the pool deck that night and headed to bed with his smoking hot wife leaving us to…
Keep drinking his alcohol and smoking his cigars
….one of us said what we thought was unthinkable at the time:
“Texas A&M in the SEC?”
“Hell….it make sense and the fit is great….
…and it would for sure piss off the boys in Austin….BUT…..who would have the guts to pull that move off in College Station?”
Well, we have the answer to that question….the bow-tie wearing President of Texas A&M R. Bowen Loftin…
…who now has Texas A&M in the hottest and toughest sports conference in the country which brings us to the historic first season for the Aggies playing football in SEC country….2012.
(By the way that A&M alum friend of ours who put the words “Aggies and SEC” in the same sentence many years ago in Houston is excited as Hell about A&M being in the SEC and yes….he still has a smoking hot wife!)
With a new conference for Texas A&M the Aggies have a new head coach in Kevin Sumlin as well and as Sumlin sits in his big office in the A&M athletic complex he must sit back and wonder from time-to-time about what an incredible country he is living in because it was only 5 years that Sumlin was the Co-Offensive Coordinator at Oklahoma and now he is the Head Football Coach at Texas A&M and if that doesn’t tell you America is a Helluva country with incredible opportunities for people that are willing to work their asses off then nothing will!
Turning to A&M’s first season in the SEC (No, we have not forgotten about that tough game A&M has at La. Tech to open the season which should be a Great game but one we see the Aggies winning in the end) things get off to a rip-roaring start for the Aggies with the formerly mighty Florida Gators showing up in Will Muschamp’s favorite vacation spot, College Station, Texas, in the second game of the year in what is a MUST-WIN Game for Muschamp and a IT WOULD BE A HELLUVA NICE WIN for Kevin Sumlin and usually in those cases the IT WOULD BE A HELLUVA NICE WIN coach wins and that is what we expect on September 8 as the Aggies begin their SEC Conference history with a….
WIN over the Gators!
If the Aggies can beat the Gators in Week 2 then they have a better than 50 – 50 chance to be undefeated when the LSU Tigers roll into College Station on October 20 th and isn’t the A&M – LSU rivalry going to be great fun to watch in the coming years and no doubt we expect an entertaining game in 2012 between these old foes although we find it hard to believe that the Aggies will find a way to win this game even with the 12 th Man going wild at Kyle Field which will no doubt be the case!
Overall, we see Texas A&M having a successful first year in the SEC Conference and finishing 9 – 3 Overall and 5 – 3 in SEC play, but to achieve those records the Aggies will have to win what will be tough games at Arkansas and at Mississippi State and beat Missouri at home in the last regular season game of the year.
Whatever happens in 2012 with the Texas A&M football team in their inaugural year in the SEC Conference there is one thing for Damn Sure….
Texas A&M in the SEC is going to GREAT fun to watch both in person when we get the opportunity to visit Kyle Field which is a place we always enjoy visiting and on TV as well and no doubt SEC fans will feel the same way in the coming years as the Aggies put their imprint and special history on the SEC Conference.
If only September 8 was this Saturday because Florida running onto Kyle Field to play SEC Conference member Texas A&M is going to be a Helluva thing to see, a Helluva lot of fun and it should be a Helluva football game to boot!
