Coaches Hot Seat Analysis:  It seems like it was only yesterday the week before Christmas…..2006….when Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby introduced Jim Harbaugh as the new head football coach of the Stanford Cardinal…

Stanford Introduces Jim Harbaugh As Head Football Coach, December 19, 2006, Stanford Athletics

…and in that press conference which was very Damn entertaining by the way we must say Jim Harbaugh said:

“I thank Bob Bowlsby for putting his trust in me to lead the Stanford University football program,” Harbaugh continued. “I vow I will attack this endeavor with enthusiasm unknown to mankind.”

Damn Jim Harbaugh….WELL SAID and….WELL DONE!

Jim Harbaugh took over a Stanford football program in 2007 that had put up the follow records under the previous 8 head coaches going back to when the Great Bill Walsh first arrived on The Farm in 1977:

Walt Harris (2005 – 2006):  6 – 17
Buddy Teevens (2002 – 2004):  10 – 23
Ty Willingham (1995 – 2001):  44 – 36 – 1
Bill Walsh (1992 – 1994): 17 – 17 – 1
Denny Green (1989 – 1991):  16 – 18
Jack Elway (1984 – 1988):  25 – 29 – 2
Paul Wiggin (1980 – 1983):  16 – 28
Rod Dowhower (1979):  5 – 5 – 1
Bill Walsh (1977 – 1978):  17 – 7

Total Win/Loss for Stanford Football 1977 – 2006:  156 – 180 – 5 (.457)

In FOUR years at Stanford Jim Harbaugh put up records of:

2007:  4 – 8
2008:  5 – 7
2009:  8 – 5
2010:  12 – 1

Total Jim Harbaugh Win/Loss:  29 – 21 (.580)

And in that first 4 – 8 season one of those wins was over….Pete Carroll and the USC Trojans at the LA Coliseum in one of the greatest nights in Stanford football history that joyfully and interestingly ended with several Coaches Hot Seat members waking-up with the Sun coming up the next morning at a beach house in Malibu with the Eagles great music playing in the background that was not the house we were renting! Yes, how we ended up at that Malibu house which was down from our rented house is still a mystery although the owner of the house instructed his chef to make us breakfast so of course to be polite we all ordered omelets and chowed down before walking up the beach and wonder if it was all just a dream that the Stanford Cardinal had beaten USC the night before…NO…it was not a dream Pete Carroll!

Once Jim Harbaugh left The Farm for the San Francisco 49ers after the 2010 season Cardinal offensive coordinator David Shaw took over and led Stanford to a 11 – 2 record with Andrew Luck under center in 2011 and with Luck now off to the NFL we all are going to find out what the Stanford football program and head coach David Shaw are all about and if they can keep the FEAR THE DAMN TREE football program moving forward.

David Shaw is a lot to a little younger that all of us here at Coaches Hot Seat but we remember David very well from his playing days at Stanford and a very tough Damn wide receiver Shaw was and his offense both under Harbaugh and now as the head coach himself reflect Shaw’s toughness and going forward keeping that toughness, tenacity and will NOT BACK DOWN to anyone and in FACT we are going to pop you in the mouth spirit will be critical to keeping things rolling on The Farm.

What a lot of people that follow Major College Football don’t realize is that Stanford University football under both Jim Harbaugh and now David Shaw have recruited very well in recent years and even with Andrew Luck now off to the NFL there is a Helluva lot of talent and REAL football players on the 2012 Cardinal football team.

Take a look at the recent Rivals.com Team Recruiting Rankings for Stanford Football

2012 – #5
2011 – #22
2010 – #26
2009 – #20
2008 – #50

…and take note that in 2008 Stanford University had ZERO 5-Star recruits and in 2012 Stanford had THREE 5-Star recruits the same as Alabama, Florida, Florida State and USC.

Stanford Football is going to make it very simple on its opponents in 2012 because The Cardinal is going to….

Smack you in the Mouth and Run the Ball right at YOU (like this from 2009 with Toby Gerhart)

A Quarterback that makes very few mistakes

Play Tough and Tenacious Defense

Have Solid Special Teams

Limit Turnovers

….and if you can do all of the above you can WIN a lot of football games and we expect Stanford Football to WIN a lot of football games in 2012.

Play Hard Stanford Football…..Play Very Damn Hard and remember FEAR THE DAMN TREE….BECAUSE…

….the TREE WILL POP YOU IN THE MOUTH AND KICK YOUR ASS and still be able to tell you all about the Pythagorean Theorem in N-Space without any trouble at all!
