Idaho Fires Head Football Coach Robb Akey – What Idaho Football Needs To Do Now – Post Week 8 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings
Idaho Fires Head Football Coach Robb Akey
YES, getting beat 70 – 28 by a La. Tech team that only a few years ago Idaho was much better than will lead to your firing and that is exactly what happened on Sunday…
…and now Idaho which will be conference-less with its football program in 2012 (Idaho athletics rejoined the Big Sky Conference in all sports in 2014 except football this past week: Idaho to join Big Sky in all sports but football in 2014) faces the challenge of hiring a football coach that can turn things around with Vandals football which will be hard, it will be difficult….but it is not impossible.
We can think of a dozen coaches that would take on the challenge of Idaho football but none of those coaches would take on that challenge unless they thought that by resurrecting Vandals football that it would lead onto bigger and better things and therein lies the weakness of the Idaho football program especially relative to what Boise State has built over the past 20 years.
Boise State has built a FOOTBALL PROGRAM that not only hired quality head coaches BUT it also demanded that assistant coaches be developed to such a level that they could take over in case the head coach moved onto “bigger and better things” which happened three times in the past 20 years and Boise State is still WINNING football games under the third head coach promoted from within.
Idaho football desperately needs a head football coach that can both build a winning football program AND quality coaching staff at the same time and believe it or not there are coaches out there that can do that and would do that if asked by the folks in Moscow, Idaho to take on that challenge.
Now it is up to the “powers that be” at and around the University of Idaho to find that…
Post Week 8 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings
Hey, Johnny! It is just us or is it getting HOT around here?
Tell ‘em the TRUTH Johnny whether they want to hear it or not!
1. Frank Spaziani, Boston College – On Saturday Boston College got whipped by a team in Georgia Tech that got whipped by Sun Belt Conference member Middle Tennessee State only a couple of weeks ago and if that isn’t a new low for the Boston College football program then check out this little FACTOID:
Boston College is 1 – 6 in 2012 and their ONLY WIN is over…
Oh, if you didn’t think the Big Ten Conference is just one big CUPCAKE…
…Northwestern which almost beat Nebraska on Saturday only beat BC by a score of…
22 – 13!
Frank Spaziani is now 21 – 25 overall and 12 – 16 in conference play in four seasons as the head coach at Boston College and Spaziani took over a team that had won…
…in the previous four seasons!
Someone cue Dandy Don Meredith because this party is OVER!
2. Gene Chizik, Auburn – In the Post Week 7 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings we made a few comments in this blog about SATAN which can be found HERE (under the Gene Chizik comments) and in those comments we related a conversation between a CHS Member and the father of a girl he was dating in Atlanta in the mid-1990s whose father was a Southern Baptist minister.
Over the weekend in San Francisco that CHS Member remembered another story about that Southern Baptist minister which is rather entertaining as well and it goes like this…
The CHS Member, his girlfriend, and his girlfriends parents (with the father being the Southern Baptist minister) were out at a Christmas tree farm outside of Atlanta a few weeks before Christmas and while the CHS Member and Southern Baptist minister were walking together down a line of Christmas trees the Southern Baptist minister who seemed to notice that his daughter was having LOTS OF FUN dating this CHS member asked the CHS member:
Southern Baptist minister: “Let me ask you something son.”
CHS Member: “Yes, sir. Anything.”
Southern Baptist minister: “Would you say that you are walking with the Lord?”
The CHS member thought about that for about 10 seconds or so and said…
CHS Member: “Sir, I cannot lie to you. No, I am not walking with the Lord.”
Southern Baptist Minster: “Well then, may I ask who you are walking with?”
The CHS member again thought about that question for about 10 seconds or so and said…
CHS Member: “Well, sir. If I am walking with anyone it would have to be with Jimmy Buffett.”
YES, the CHS member reports that the “walking with Jimmy Buffett” comment got a BIG laugh from the Southern Baptist minster!
Now back to the subject at hand which is…
Auburn head coach Gene Chizik’s SCORCHING REAR-END!
We always love reading the newspapers across the South because of the passion that even the media have for the GREAT game of college football and after Auburn lost to Vanderbilt on Saturday Kevin Scarbinsky of al.com wrote…
“You change coaches when you start losing to teams you’re not supposed to lose to, historically speaking, and you do it in consecutive games.
You change coaches when you’re off to your worst start in 60 years, and you’ve passed the season’s midpoint and you still can’t be sure you’ve hit bottom.
You change coaches when you’ve fallen so far behind your biggest rival that you have to trade in your binoculars for a telescope to watch him pull farther and farther away.
That’s where Auburn and Alabama found themselves Saturday. They were in the exact same state in polar opposite states.
Alabama has a head coach in search of a challenge. Auburn has a program in need of a head coaching change.
It looks like Nick Saban can’t be stopped, which is just part of the reason Gene Chizik’s got to go.”
A very good point by Scarbinsky because as bad as the Auburn season has gone and it has gone very Damn bad IF for some reason Alabama wasn’t on the march to a third national championship in four seasons we can imagine that Chizik might be allowed to let the Auburn football program slip only two years removed from the National Championship BUT and that is a very BIG BUT…
The Alabama Crimson Tide are on the march under Nick Saban like Sherman’s March to the Sea and the Auburn football program looks like it is now worse than it was before Pat Dye arrived at Auburn in 1981 and Auburn was BAD before Pat Dye arrived on The Plains in 1981!
The MOST interesting question here at Coaches Hot Seat relative to the Auburn football program and Gene Chizik starts with…
Why has the Auburn football program fallen so far in such a short period of time?
Our answer to the above question which is the Bottom-Line why the chasm between Alabama and Auburn is now so wide and which is also our opinion:
Gene Chizik is just flat-out not as hungry as Nick Saban.
We could go into a long psychological analysis of what drives Nick Saban to keep working so hard to build championship football teams and we do believe we know precisely what drives Nick Saban forward….BUT….the subject at hand is Gene Chizik and our Bottom-Line opinion is that Chizik could frankly care less if Auburn wins 1 or 14 games a year because Chizik has “already achieved his goal in life” which was to coach a college football team to a National Championship and as anyone on the top of anything in sports, business or even life can tell you once you reach your goal in life you have to…
RESET YOUR GOALS EVEN HIGHER.
Gene Chizik has in his back pocket a National Championship and $7 plus Million Dollars that Auburn would owe him if he was fired in December and in our opinion and it is just our opinion Gene Chizik will happily take that $7 Million Dollars paid out in monthly payments of about $115,000 a month for the next five years and…
GO TO THE BEACH
…and let Nick Saban and Alabama pile up all the National Championships they want over in Tuscaloosa and Chizik at the beach will not lose a moment of sleep over what happens at Alabama or Auburn and will just laugh out loud when that $115,000 direct deposit hits his bank account every month for the next five years!
You see….we KNOW that Gene Chizik is a good football coach and there is…
NO Rational Explanation
…for why Auburn football has fallen so far and so fast UNLESS one assumes that the head coach at Auburn just no longer is DRIVEN to do his job, Win Games and Win Championships.
They have a name for a coach that is was not DRIVEN at Auburn and that name is…
….and if the Auburn fans are satisfied with becoming once again the doormat for Alabama football then they can sit on their hands and talk about “the family” or they can hold Gene Chizik responsible for what is happened in 2012 and demand that Auburn University go out and find themselves a…
…that will be as driven as the head coach at the University of Alabama.
Oh, you say there is no one out there as DRIVEN as Nick Saban?
Hell, we will start walking from San Francisco tonight for the Auburn head coaching job and when we got to Auburn we would make one thing abundantly clear to the “Auburn family”:
WE are going to KICK NICK SABAN’S ASS!
3. Derek Dooley, Tennessee – When you are a head coach and your team just got its’ ass whipped…
44 – 13
…on your home field and the opposing coach says that you are…
….as Nick Saban did about Derek Dooley after the Bama – Tennessee game on Saturday night it is time for some good old-fashioned Coaches Hot Seat translation so that EVERYONE including the Tennessee fans understand just what Nick Saban was saying:
Nick Saban said that Derek Dooley is “doing a fantastic job” at Tennessee.
Coaches Hot Seat Translation of what Nick Saban REALLY meant: Derek Dooley was on my coaching staff at LSU and the Miami Dolphins and I am great friends with Vince and Barbara Dooley so of course I believe Derek is “doing a fantastic job” and if there is somehow – someway I can keep Derek at Tennessee for another couple of years then that will be two more SURE-FIRE WINS for Alabama! Roll Tide Baby! Hell, one thing for sure I don’t want Tennessee to go out and hire someone that runs a spread offense like what the Cat up at Oregon is running because I am working overtime to try and kill the spread offense by leaking things to the lackeys in the media and the last thing I want to see is Tennessee hiring someone like that guy running the Clemson spread offense right now which would really tire out my defensive players and make my job a Helluva lot more difficult!
YES, Nick Saban believes that Derek Dooley is “doing a fantastic job!”
And Krispy Kreme donuts have NO Sugar or Fat in them!
Bottom-Line on Derek Dooley:
Overall Record: 14 – 17
SEC Record: 4 – 16
Remember, we are talking about TENNESSEE FOOTBALL here and even Barbara Dooley KNOWS FULL WELL the above records put up by her “Baby” are no where near at the acceptable level for TENNESSEE FOOTBALL and unless the Vols can find three wins out of their remaining five games Nick Saban will have a tense couple of weeks on his hands come December waiting to see if Tennessee hires themselves another coach that Nick thinks will do a “great job” or a coach that Nick will say is “not playing football the way we should be playing football” which translated means a coach that makes my ass work a lot harder in getting prepared for!
4. Joker Phillips, Kentucky – Kentucky clearly played better against Georgia this past Saturday BUT when one takes a closer look at who Georgia has beaten in 2012…
Buffalo, Missouri, Florida Atlantic, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and now Kentucky
….the Bulldogs haven’t really beaten ANYONE so the Bulldogs might just be AVERAGE and we just DON’T KNOW IT YET but we will get an answer to that question this Saturday in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party!
Georgia was Kentucky’s SIXTH straight loss and leaves the Wildcats 1 – 7 overall and 0 – 5 in SEC play and with these games left…
….which means it looks like Kentucky football could be headed to a 2 win season in 2012 and it will be up to the fans, boosters and supporters of Kentucky football to decide if that is acceptable to them and if it is then Kentucky basketball season is just around the corner!
5. Jeff Tedford, California – The latest word out of Berkeley that we have heard is that IF….
Jeff Tedford and the Cal Bears can get to 6 wins in 2012
…that Tedford might just get one more year in the “Land of the Crazy Nuts” otherwise known as Berkeley, California and now at 3 – 5 overall and 2 – 3 in Pac-12 play and with these games left….
At Oregon State
…IF the Bears lose at Utah on Saturday it will take a miracle BIGGER than the miracle finish to the 1982 Stanford – Cal BIG Game….
…..for Cal to get 6 wins in 2012!
6. Charlie Weis, Kansas – A few years ago then Stanford head coach and now San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh briefly considering taking the Kansas head coaching job in the wake of Mark Mangino’s firing at Kansas and if KU had hired Harbaugh in 2009 we can assure Jayhawk football fans that KU football would have won a lot more than…
…over the last three seasons and after that 52 – 7 Oklahoma BEATDOWN of Kansas on Saturday it looks like the wins will be few and far between at Kansas at least in the immediate future!
Charlie Weis is now 1 – 6 at Kansas and the Jayhawks ONLY WIN in 2012 is over…
South Dakota State
…and Oh by the way there is a very interesting game this Saturday in Lawrence between…
Texas and Kansas
….that is a game that NEITHER head coach can afford to lose because a loss by Weis will just keep Charlie on the Hot Seat and a loss by Texas will put Mack Brown back on the Hot Seat!
Oh, that’s right!
Mack Brown IS NOT on the Hot Seat because this is a NEW Texas not the OLD Texas and if Mack Brown is coaching AVERAGE football then the “powers that be” at Texas will be happy with Mack because let’s face FACTS:
Mack Brown is trying his hardest and if Mack is now only an AVERAGE football coach then…
The fans of University of Texas football will just have to learn to accept AVERAGE!
We can just hear the fans of Texas football crying out in Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium…
“Texas!!…..We are AVERAGE and proud of it!!”
7. Kevin Wilson, Indiana – No one told Kevin Wilson it was going to be EASY to turn Indiana into a winning football program BUT Kevin Wilson in two years at Indiana has put up the following records….
Overall: 3 – 16
Big Ten: 0 – 11
…and the head coach that preceded Wilson at Indiana, Bill Lynch, turned over to Wilson a Hoosiers football program that put up these yearly and overall records in Lynch’s four years on the job:
2007: 7 – 6
2008: 3 – 9
2009: 4 – 8
2010: 5 – 7
Overall: 19 – 30
Big Ten: 6 – 26
….and Call Us STUPID if you like but the Indiana football program is clearly going backwards under Kevin Wilson.
Indiana’s overall record in 2012 is 2 – 5 having beaten I-AA Indiana State and first year I-A team UMass and IU’s Big Ten record is 0 – 3 and the Hoosiers have left on the schedule….
At Penn State
…which are ALL better football teams than who beat Indiana on Saturday….Navy.
Did someone say that Indiana basketball was ranked No. 1 preseason?
Good, because this is going to be a long winter for Indiana football fans!
8. Dan Enos, Central Michigan – Dan Enos took over a Central Michigan football team that had won…
…in the four seasons before he arrived in 2010 and Dan Enos’ records at Central Michigan are…
Overall: 8 – 23
MAC: 4 – 15
…and after the loss to Ball State on Saturday CMU has left…
At Eastern Michigan
…and with only 2 wins on the board Enos and his team will have to win four of their last 5 games just to hit the .500 mark which by any measure we know of would still be way below the level of football that Central Michigan is capable of playing.
9. Skip Holtz, South Florida – If you look at Skip Holtz’s head coaching record before he took over at South Florida in 2010 one finds the following win/loss records at Connecticut and East Carolina:
Overall: 72 – 50
Conference: 50 – 30
….which is solid but not on a “Lou Holtz” level but still we can only wonder about Skip Holtz’s record at South Florida…
2010 – 8 – 5
2011 – 5 – 7
2012 – 2 – 5
What the Hell?
Skip Holtz took over a South Florida football program from Jim Leavitt…who in our opinion was fired for a Bogus reason….and Jim Leavitt in his last five years a USF put up records of..
Overall: 40 – 24
…and took the Bulls to five straight bowl games and by any measure we can think of the South Florida football program appears to be going backwards under Skip Holtz.
After the very close loss at Louisville on Saturday the South Florida Bulls are now 2 – 5 overall and 0 – 3 in Big East play and Bulls have left….
….and the next two homes games against Syracuse and Connecticut are HUGE if South Florida wants any chance to get to 6 wins in 2012 and the word on the street that we heard in Tampa when we were at the Republican Convention in late August was that Skip Holtz REALLY could not afford another losing season at South Florida and to that we can only say…
Coach Hard Skip!
10. Rich Ellerson, Army – As we have said before we really DO NOT like putting Military Academy head football coaches on the Hot Seat but after Army lost to Eastern Michigan on Saturday which got its FIRST WIN of the season over the Cadets the Hot Seat is where Army head coach Rich Ellerson now finds himself.
Now at 1 – 6 on the season Army has left…
…which will ALL be very tough games BUT they will NOT be tougher than what the Army football players will face once they graduate and are commissioned into the REAL Army and have to lay their lives on the line for OUR country and with that in mind we can only say…
Buck up Army Football and be ARMY STRONG!
