Mike Sherman and Texas A&M in 2008
We here at Coaches Hot Seat were not surprised that Franchione was fired at Texas A&M at the end of the ’07 season, but we were surprised with his replacement, Mike Sherman. It’s not that Mike Sherman wasn’t a good “pro” head football coach, but with the stakes so high as they are at A&M, we expected the Aggies to find an up-and-coming college assistant or a very experienced college head coach to be hired to lead the Texas A&M football program. Sherman does have the advantage of having coached at A&M for seven sesaons as an assistant, so he know what he is getting into, but the rubber meets the road in the Big 12 South in how many time A&M can beat Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech. If Sherman cannot put A&M at the top of the Big 12 South pretty quickly, the pressure is going to be turned up very high, and that pressure will make the heat he felt at Green Bay feel like northern Wisconsin in winter compared to a hot August day in College Station. Here is how we see the 2008 Texas A&M season playing out:
