Week 6 Coaches Hot Seat MUST Win Games for Coaches and Teams
Thursday, October 4
Lane Kiffin, USC vs. Utah – So far in the 2012 the USC Trojans have beaten…
…that have a combined win/loss record of…
3 – 10
…which means that so far in 2012 the USC Trojans have beaten…
On Thursday night the USC Trojans travel to Salt Lake City to play a 2 – 2 Utah team that two weeks ago got blasted by Arizona State…
37 – 7
….and if USC cannot beat the Utes handily then one has to wonder just what in the Hell that Lane Kiffin & Company have been doing for the past year!
Even under NCAA sanctions USC has three to four more times talent than Utah so this game should be an easy walk for the Trojans especially if the Utes played like they did against Arizona State which was a game where the Utah coaches and players just MAILED the game in and appropriately got their asses whipped.
If USC beats Utah they will be 4 – 1 and will play at Washington next week and will keep their chances for a Pac-12 title alive BUT if USC loses to Utah then there could be three OR four more losses left on the schedule for the Trojans this season which would land Lane Kiffin squarely on the Hot Seat!
Mario Cristobal, Florida International vs. Arkansas State – We are not quite sure what Florida International head coach Mario Cristobal did in the offseason BUT this FIU team is easily his most talented team in his 6 years at the school and after putting up records of 7 – 6 and 8 – 5 the least two seasons we expected FIU to come roaring out of the blocks in 2012 BUT FIU is now….
1 – 4
…after an overtime win over Akron and losses to Duke, UCF, Louisville and La. Lafayette and now Cristobal and FIU have a make-or-break game against Arkansas State on Thursday because a loss in this spot and it will be Dandy Don Meredith time for Florida International football in 2012.
Friday, October 5
Doug Marrone, Syracuse vs. Pitt – After taking over a pretty bad football program at Syracuse in 2009 Doug Marrone has put up records of….
2009: 4 – 8
2010: 8 – 5
2011: 5 – 7
…in his first three years on the job BUT a 1 – 3 start with losses to three pretty good teams in Northwestern, USC and Minnesota means that the Orangemen have a MUST Win Game on Friday night against an improving Pitt team under new head coach Paul Chryst. With Rutgers up next on the road this is very simple: Pitt is a MUST, MUST, MUST Win Game for Doug Marrone and Syracuse.
Saturday, October 6
Gene Chizik, Auburn vs. Arkansas – Barring a total collapse of Auburn football in 2012 Gene Chizik is not going to get fired at the end of this season BUT there is something almost as bad as getting fired in modern day Major College Football and that is to find your ass on the Hot Seat and if Auburn loses to a hapless Arkansas team on Saturday that is coached by a clearly heartbroken, troubled, confused and it now seems $40 Million Dollars in debt in Hogs head coach John L. Smith what will happen next will be very straightforward and simple for everyone to understand:
Gene Chizik will wake-up Monday morning to find his ass on the Hot Seat!
AND even worse….
The Auburn fans will be roasting Chizik’s ass from one end of the state of Alabama to the other and what makes it even worse is that Nick Saban and his Alabama team have a bye week and are sitting over in Tuscaloosa at…
5 – 0
…and it seems like the Tide hasn’t even broken a sweat this season in running up those 5 wins and don’t you just know that the Tide is ROLLING just pisses of Auburn fans even more!
Here is our heartfelt advice for Gene Chizik as it applies to the Arkansas game:
DO NOT LOSE this game to Arkansas.
Frank Spaziani, Boston College vs. Army – We asked one of our Boston College alum friends who got his undergrad degree from BC and a Masters from MIT what he thought Frank Spaziani had to do to return to coach the Eagles in 2013 and he said:
What is Boston College this season….1 – 3?
CHS: Yes, that’s right.
BC and MIT grad: Well, if he loses to Army on Saturday it’s over for sure but if BC beats Army to go to 2 – 3 then…..he will have to win 5 of the remaining 7 games to return in 2013. Who does BC have left after Army?
CHS: At Florida State, at Georgia Tech, Maryland, at Wake Forest. Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and at NC State
BC and MIT grad: Wow…that’s a tough schedule and if I was Frank Spaziani I would be talking with my agent about doing some TV work for the 2013 college football season.
We here at Coaches Hot Seat agree completely!
Hell, Frank, ESPN is only 115 miles away from Chestnut Hill so you could easily drive down to Bristol, CT from you current house to do some work for the Mother Ship next football season!
Pssstt….Frank….just between you and us if you do go to work for ESPN our recommendation is that on your first day at the Mother Ship that you just knock the Tar Poop out of Colin Cowherd.
Why should you knock the Tar Poop out of Colin Cowherd on your first day of work at ESPN?
Well, he deserves to get the Tar Poop knocked out of him and it will make you a hero on the ESPN campus!
Memo to Colin Cowherd: You need to quit picking games that Tony “Butterfingers” Romo is playing in which means quit picking Dallas to beat anyone especially since the Dallas Cowboys don’t have a REAL quarterback or head coach and as usual the LAST person on Earth that will realize that the Dallas Cowboys don’t have a REAL quarterback or head coach is…
Rich Ellerson, Army vs. Boston College – Rich Ellerson and Army desperately need SOMETHING to go right in 2012 after starting the season 0 – 4 and now hosting Boston College on Saturday and if there is a game in 2012 where a team with a lot less talent can beat a team with a lot more talent it is Army over Boston College BUT Army will have to play like they are future officers in the greatest Army in the world….which they are….the US Army. Play hard cadets and make your country proud!
Ellis Johnson, Southern Miss vs. Boise State – Sometime after taking the Southern Miss job last year new head coach Ellis Johnson must have looked at the 2012 schedule and said to himself something like….
We are opening next season at Nebraska, East Carolina, at Western Kentucky, Louisville and Boise State?
What kind of MORON made that schedule?
Oh, but Ellis…
After Boise State your Golden Eagles play at UCF next Saturday!
YES, after starting 0 – 4 Ellis Johnson and Southern Miss face a MUST Win Game against Boise State on Saturday and this is a Boise State team that has three BIG weaknesses and makes two or three BIG mistake in each game so this is a game Southern Miss can win.
Frank Beamer, Va. Tech vs. North Carolina – We have a lot of respect for Frank Beamer here at Coaches Hot Seat and if Frank Beamer pulls a Jim Tressel or Bobby Petrino on everyone we might just lose our faith in all of humanity BUT a couple of years ago on one of our every-two-years trips to Virginia and Washington DC with our wives and children to visit Presidential homes and OUR nation’s capital a Virginia Tech alum that lives in Virginia and who we have known going back to our days in the US Military said the most curious thing to us about Frank Beamer and his coaching staff as we were walking around the grounds of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello:
Va. Tech alum: Coach Beamer does a great job, but I was in the athletic offices at Virginia Tech a few years back early in a game week during the college football season and my impression of the coaches and players was that their intensity level was nowhere near what it should have been in getting ready for what was a very big game.
CHS: What do you mean by that?
Va. Tech alum: There was no intensity, there was no fire, there was no passion….there was no…..desperation to get better that day and week in order to win the game on Saturday.
CHS: Some head coaches and coaching staffs are just like that.
Va. Tech alum: Well, I didn’t like it and Va. Tech lost their game that week.
What game was that Va. Tech alum talking about?
The 2006 October 12 Thursday night game at Boston College that Virginia Tech lost 22 – 3 AFTER losing to Georgia Tech the week before 38 – 27.
For the record Va. Tech finished the 2006 regular season with a record of:
10 – 2
YES, a very good record BUT what IF…..
Frank Beamer and his Va. Tech coaching staff have lapses EVERY season where they end up costing their team games BECAUSE the coaches led by Frank Beamer are not coming to work EACH AND EVERY DAY with a passion and fire to deliver a team to the playing field that is prepared and ready to WIN?
Well, in 2012 Virginia Tech has lost to two teams in…
Pitt and Cincinnati
…that the Hokies have two to four times more talent than and on Saturday Va. Tech is playing a North Carolina team on the road that they have MORE talent than and one can only wonder…
Will Frank Beamer have his team ready to play on Saturday?
We are ALL about to find out.
Joker Phillips, Kentucky vs. Mississippi State – Kentucky is NOT an easy place to win SEC Conference games at and in 7 seasons as the Kentucky head coach Rich Brooks put up an SEC record of..
16 – 39 (.291)
….and Joker Phillips is now in his third season on the job and his record in SEC Conference play is…
4 – 14 (.222)
….and with these SEC games left in 2012 starting with the Bulldogs on Saturday….
….we believe that if Kentucky wins TWO SEC games in 2012 they will be doing very good or be very lucky and IF Kentucky did win TWO SEC games in 2012 that would put Joker Phillips SEC record at Kentucky at…
6 – 18 (.250)
…and really only the Kentucky fans and UK administration can determine if that kind of record is acceptable to them or not but whatever the case Mississippi State is MUST Win game for the Kentucky Wildcats.
David Shaw, Stanford vs. Arizona – Talk about a turning point game after the Debacle in Seattle against the Washington Huskies last Thursday night the Stanford Cardinal returns home to face a resurgent Arizona team on The Farm and if Stanford football is really a BIG TIME football program this is a game that The Cardinal should easily WIN. With a game at Notre Dame up next and the Vegas Boys saying Stanford is almost a 10 point favorite over Arizona this is a MUST Win Game for Stanford football and a game that will determine whether Stanford is…
Is falling back into mediocrity
….which in case anyone doesn’t know it there on The Farm….
Stanford Football IS NOT going back into mediocrity
Head Coach David Shaw and Stanford face a MUST Win Game against Arizona.
Les Miles, LSU vs. Florida – The whispers are starting to be heard along the bayou again that go something like….
“Les Miles is crazy. Les Miles is nuts. Les Miles doesn’t have a clue to what he is doing. Les Miles hasn’t recovered from that Alabama beatdown in New Orleans in January.”
…which are sure some strange whispers about a head coach that has his team at 5 – 0 on the season BUT that Auburn game was very close…too close…and what about the quarterback who seems to get jumpy when pressured AND just in time for those whispers to either go quiet or be amplified a whole Helluva lot we have this game Saturday with LSU traveling to Gainesville to play the 4 – 0 Florida Gators.
Here’s the thing that should keep Les Miles up at night especially as he is taking his LSU team to play Florida in Gainesville:
Alabama showed everyone how to beat LSU and the way to beat LSU is to…
Pressure the LSU Quarterback
….which provides the double-punch of slowing down the LSU running game as the gaps are filled up with blitzing linebackers and defensive backs AND it puts pressure on the quarterback as well and it seems that when a LSU quarterback the last few years gets pressure LSU either loses or barely wins.
Guess what Les Miles?
Your Quarterback Zach Mettenberger is going to GET SOME HEAT on Saturday afternoon in The Swamp and if Mettenberger can’t handle that HEAT the LSU Tigers are going to be leaving Gainesville with their FIRST loss on the season and it probably won’t be LSU’s LAST LOSS on the season.
Even at 5 – 0 LSU looks like a very fragile football team to us that could unravel if things go against them and as our New Orleans Coon Ass friend told us recently when we asked about LSU this season….
“There is something not right about this LSU team and I have a sneaking suspicion that there are still a lot of LSU players from last year’s team that are wondering why Miles didn’t play Jarrett Lee in the national title game against Bama and now they wonder what else is Miles doing or not doing that could be putting the team at a disadvantage.”
Well, this LSU – Florida Game is a “Big Boy” Game as Les Miles likes to say and Les Miles can shut everyone up if the Tigers get a big win in Gainesville….
…if LSU loses then those whispers on the bayou will only get louder and with these games left after Florida:
At Texas A&M
….if this LSU football team does unravel Les Miles might wake-up in December and find his rear-end on the Hot Seat!
Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech vs. Clemson – After two overtime losses to Virginia Tech and Miami and a Complete Beatdown by Middle Tennessee Yellow Jackets head coach Paul Johnson must be wondering what is wrong with this football team.
We have an answer for you Paul Johnson: YOUR football team DOESN’T Block and it DOESN’T Tackle.
That should be simple enough to understand and with a game this Saturday at Clemson if the Yellow Jackets…
DON’T Block and Tackle
…against the Tigers in Death Valley Paul Johnson is going to wake-up on Sunday morning and his team’s record is going to be 2 – 4 and it will be an uphill fight for Georgia Tech to just get to a bowl game in 2012.
Block and Tackle Yellow Jackets…Block and Tackle.
Bret Bielema, Wisconsin vs. Illinois – Wisconsin had EVERY opportunity to beat Nebraska in Lincoln last Saturday and now the Badgers return home to Madison to face Illinois in what is not so much a MUST Win Game for Bielema and Wisconsin but a…
Better the Hell NOT Lose It Game!
Can Illinois with a first year coach in Tim Beckman travel to Madison and beat Wisconsin?
Well, the Illini shouldn’t beat Wisconsin on Saturday BUT if they do…
Bret Bielema’s rear-end will start to warm-up!
Bob Stoops, Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech – Our reading of the Oklahoma media which does just a great job of covering Oklahoma and Oklahoma State football is that there are some doubts starting to creep in among the media AND among the folks around Oklahoma football that something is just NOT right in Norman and that the Sooners may be headed towards their SECOND mediocre year in the last four season with anything less than 9 wins in a year being Mediocre at Oklahoma.
Oklahoma hasn’t won at Lubbock against Texas Tech since 2003 and if Oklahoma loses this game with the Red River Rivalry against Texas up next there is going to be some grumbling among OU football fans and THERE SHOULD BE SOME grumbling because Oklahoma has no Damn excuse for losing to Kansas State at home and Texas Tech ANYWHERE on Planet Earth.
YES, we will ALL find out how much Bob Stoops REALLY wants to win anymore because if his Sooners go out to Lubbock and slop around and lose to an inferior talent-wise team in Texas Tech then one can only wonder what will Bob Stoops’ excuse be on Sunday?
There is NO EXCUSE to lose this game “formerly Big Game and now Lose Little Games” Bob Stoops!
Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma – Tommy Tuberville must be thanking his Good Luck that after starting the season 4 – 0 he has Oklahoma coming into Lubbock with an offense that wouldn’t cut it in 75 lb. Pee Wee football league and an OU quarterback that throws the ball wildly when someone gets within 5 feet of his pretty face!
Blitz Tubby Blitz and the Red Raiders will be 5 – 0!
Gary Pinkel, Missouri vs. Vanderbilt – Missouri is now 0 – 2 in SEC play after losses to Georgia and South Carolina and there is no shame in losing to two Top Ten teams BUT losing to a 1 – 3 Vanderbilt team would be another story and with Alabama due in Columbia next Saturday Vandy is a MUST Win Game for Gary Pinkel and his Missouri Tigers.
Mack Brown, Texas vs. West Virginia – In order for Mack Brown’s Texas football program to be relevant again in Major College Football it needs to beat teams that it has more or equal talent than and on Saturday the Longhorns face a very talented BUT not MORE talented team than Texas and a win in this spot over a hot Mountaineers team would propel Texas into the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma in Dallas with a LOT of momentum and since that is what Mack Brown desperately wants to see happen West Virginia is a MUST Win for Brown and his Longhorns.
Tony Levine, Houston vs. North Texas – First year Houston head coach Tony Levine won a MUST Win Game last week vs. Rice and now at 1 – 3 on the season Levine and his Cougars face have another MUST Win Game in Week 6 against North Texas. A win in this spot is expected for Houston BUT a loss to North Texas would be a Complete Disaster and thus why Levine and his team need to play like their futures are on the line…
Because YOUR futures are on the line!
Bobby Hauck, UNLV vs. La. Tech – After the loss to Utah State last week Bobby Hauck’s UNLV team is now 1 – 4 on the season and things don’t get any easier with a trip to play a very hot team in La. Tech and it could be said that if the Running Rebels keep La. Tech from scoring over 40 points that will be some kind of victory since the Bulldogs are averaging over 50 points a game on offense in 2012
UNLV needs some wins and quick and thus La. Tech is a MUST Win Game for the Running Rebels and Bobby Hauck.
Jeff Tedford, California vs. UCLA – Many, many years ago one of our commanders in the US Military gave us a great piece of advice about staying out-of-trouble and off the “negative radar” of our current and future commanders:
“If you do your job at a very high level and your division is doing its job at a very high level and both you and your division are performing well you will have no problem having a very successful military career.”
None of us here at Coaches Hot Seat made the military our career BUT that commander’s point was well taken and that point relates to college football and the Hot Seat because if a Head Coach does his job at a very high level and if he, his assistant coaches and the team are performing well the Head Coach will not get any negative attention from us here at Coaches Hot Seat and more importantly the fans of the school will not be calling for the Head Coach’s job.
Bottom-Line: If the Head Coach and Team perform well the Head Coach will NEVER be on the Hot Seat
If the Head Coach and Team DO NOT perform well the Head Coach WILL BE on the Hot Seat
The Head Coach is fully responsible for finding his ass on the Hot Seat.
Case in Point:
Over the past SIX seasons Cal head coach Jeff Tedford’s record in the Pac-10/12 is….
21 – 26 (.447)
…and Jeff Tedford’s Overall record over the past SIX seasons is…
37 – 32 (.536)
….and the above records may be acceptable to some Cal football fans BUT we here at Coaches Hot Seat AND more importantly Jeff Tedford knows what Cal football is capable of and it is capable of a Helluva lot more than it has been achieving over the past SIX seasons.
YES, of course the UCLA game is a MUST Win Game for Jeff Tedford and Cal football
If UCLA with a first-year head coach in Jim Mora comes into Berkeley and beats Cal especially with these games remaining…
At Washington State
At Oregon State
….the very simple FACT is that the Jeff Tedford era at Cal will probably end come December.
