A Few Observations About the Stanford – Arizona Game on a Beautiful Sunday in the San Francisco Bay Area

A Few Observations About the Stanford – Arizona Game on a Beautiful Sunday in the San Francisco Bay Area

San Francisco Webcams

San Francisco Fleet Week

As we await the beginning of the San Francisco 49ers game at Candlestick Park, the Blue Angels arrival on the Bay and Game 2 of the NLDS between the Giants and Reds at AT&T Park tonight on a beautiful day in the San Francisco Bay Area we have a few observations about the Stanford – Arizona game

Stanford BEATS Arizona in Overtime 54 – 48

The Stanford offense was light-years ahead against Arizona than it was last week vs. Washington and Cardinal QB Josh Nunes took on the challenge of playing much better football and being a LEADER as he led Stanford back from a two-touchdown deficit to a BIG win in overtime vs. the Wildcats.

One noticeable difference was that Stanford got away from their tendencies to run certain plays in certain down and distance situations against Arizona which is A BIG NO-NO if you are from the Bill Walsh coaching tree which Cardinal head coach David Shaw most certainly is and not being easily predictable will be very important next week against Notre Dame which is playing some of the best defense in the country and will be very tough to run on with the way the Irish are dominating the line of scrimmage this season.

As for the Stanford defense against Arizona….UGLY!

Arizona

48 POINTS!

10 for 19 on third down

2 for 2 on fourth down

Total Yards – 617

Passing Yards – 491

Rushing Yards – 126

Like we said…UGLY!

Two things for the Stanford defense:

If Stanford doesn’t have the talent in the defensive backfield or hasn’t been coached-up well enough to play man-to-man defense then the Cardinal corners and safeties are going to have to learn to play better zone defense with an emphasis on finding the wide receivers in their zones and making Damn sure they are not able to settle into areas where there are BIG gaps between Stanford defenders. Arizona QB Matt Scott is a terrific talent but we have several people on the Coaches Hot Seat flag-football team that can throw to receivers that have no defenders within 5 yards of them especially if the defender is not coached up on how to anticipate the arrival of the ball by the actions of the receiver which is Fundamental No. 1 on being a great defensive back.

As for the problems that the Stanford defense has had in recent years against the spread offense with Notre Dame, California, Washington State, Oregon and UCLA all running some version of a spread running or passing attack the Cardinal defensive coaches starting with defensive coordinator Derek Mason are going to need to come up with some schemes and techniques to slow down these spread offenses which in our opinion begins and ends with the discipline of the defensive linemen and linebackers to not get themselves out of place on the field which is exactly what the spread-options is designed to take advantage of.

USC defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and the Trojan defenders did a great job of slowing down the Oregon Ducks’ spread offense last season….

….and a couple of weeks ago a Coaches Hot Seat member attended a high school football game where a defense shut-down a high-powered spread offense and the next day that CHS member went and talked to the head coach of that team whose defense shut down that very effective spread offense to ask him about him his philosophy on stopping the spread offense and that high school coach said:

“It’s not all that different from the defensive gameplan we used in the past against wishbone triple-option offenses in that we are very disciplined up-front and we keep more people near and up and down the line of scrimmage and then we rely on our corners to play tough man-to-man defense with help from a safety if we have a mismatch problem.”

CHS:  “So you practice to stop the spread offense much like you would practice to stop a wishbone triple-option offense?”

High School Head Coach:  “Yes, but there is one big difference. The spread QB and running back are rarely going down the line of scrimmage for an outside option play so the thing you have to focus on with the spread QB is…..”

Hold it a Second!

Chip Kelly might be reading this!

Come on Stanford defense! The Cardinal offense was coached-up and played much better against Arizona but giving up 48 points to the Wildcats especially when Oregon BEAT Arizona…

49 – 0!

…is OUTRAGEOUS!

Let’s hope for….

A San Francisco 49ers WIN over the Buffalo Bills today at Candlestick!

AND

A San Francisco Giants WIN over the Cincinnati Reds tonight!
