Big Surprise…NOT….that the Oakland Raiders fired Dennis Allen on Monday night after the Raiders started the 2014 season at…

Whatever the shortcomings of the Oakland Raiders roster and there are many problems with the Raiders roster who were the Raiders kidding in hiring Dennis Allen three seasons ago because ANYONE with an IQ over room temperature could talk to Dennis Allen and in five seconds quickly realize he was not yet ready to be a head coach in the NFL but then we are talking about the Raiders here…right?

RIGHT!

If we were hired to be the general manager of the Oakland Raiders tomorrow here are the coaches we could go after in order to be the next head coach of the Raiders:

Mike Leach, Washington State – The Pirate Mike Leach would like Chip Kelly be a breath of fresh air for the NFL and unlike Lane Kiffin….Mike Leach can coach! Anyone that is old to remember the days of John Madden as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders…and we are….will note the similarities between Madden and Mike Leach and that is a very Damn good thing. One thing about hiring Mike Leach though….the Oakland Raiders ownership and management would need to give him a decent roster and then stay the Hell out of his way.

Jon Gruden – Gotta see if Chucky is interested in coming back to Oakland…right? RIGHT!

Jim Harbaugh – Everyone knows Jim Harbaugh is done with the 49ers even if San Francisco wins the Super Bowl and everyone knows that Harbaugh really respected Al Davis which makes Jim Harbaugh a nice fit in Oakland.

Hue Jackson – Hue did a nice job in his one year as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 2011 posting an 8 – 8 record and Hue Jackson might just be who the Raiders end up with as their head coach in the end if the BIG names don’t pan out.

Greg Roman – Greg Roman has done a nice job as the offensive coordinator for Jim Harbaugh at Stanford and with the 49ers and he MIGHT be a good head coach but who really knows….we sure the Hell don’t know!

Sean Payton – Maybe Sean Payton could be so pissed-off about the moves the Saints made in the offseason which gutted his football team that he might just listen to an offer from the Raiders but it better Damn be a big offer that’s for Damn sure!

We have NEVER met anyone that is indispensable or that would be so valuable to our companies that we would have to put at risk the overall success of our companies to sign that talented person to a contract which is why it is ALWAYS very Damn stupid for any company or any NFL team to go all in on ANY football player because there is ALWAYS someone that can play very close to the level of the “star” and thus the BIG contract that might damage the overall success of the team…either financially or mentally….for the “star” is 99.99999995 of the time STUPID and FOOLISH.

Uhhhh…the TRUTH the New Orleans Saints are owned and run by Complete Buffoons and they have landed their head football coach on the Hot Seat!

“Successful sports coaches seem to think that it’s part of their game plan to write books. After all, they’re celebrities of a sort and they know something about “winning” which is a popular topic with readers of all kinds.

Bo Schembechler is one of the most successful coaches in the history of college football. He coached Michigan football for twenty years, compiling a record of 234-65-8. During that time his teams won or tied for the Big Ten championship 13 times. He never had a losing season.

That’s why it’s somewhat amazing that it took so long for Bo’s Lasting Lessons to appear. But Bo Schembechler always did things his own way.

There are three big lessons in this book: values matter, keep the rules simple, and enforce them no matter what.

Values mattered for Schembechler. Honesty was the big one. He was going to be honest no matter what and he expected the same from his coaches, his players, and everyone else. The idea was simple: always do the right thing.

He kept the rules simple. He also made sure everyone who worked for him understood the rules. They included how players were to sit in team meetings and how they were expected to dress on road trips.

He enforced the rules he had. If anyone broke Bo’s rules there were consequences. And those consequences were as inevitable as nature.

Those are the big lessons, but there are lots of lessons and bits of wisdom scattered through the book. Here are some of my favorites.

If you’re the boss you have to accept the fact that you’re the bad cop and your assistants will be the good cops.

Don’t hire smart people and then not listen to their opinions.

Seek mentors, not money, especially in the early stages of your career.

Whatever your philosophy, whatever your standards, whatever your expectations, you establish those on day one. Don’t waste a second!

Recruit for character.

Develop leaders underneath you.

Goals can’t come from the top down. They’ve got to come from the people responsible for achieving them. Your job is to help them get there, and remind them every day what their goals are, and what they have to do to make their dreams come true.

Scuttle the star system. Give everyone a role and make it important.

Emphasize execution, not innovation.

There are lots more but you can find them for yourself when you read the book. I’ve got lots of things underlined, and Post-It notes dangle off lots of pages.

There are some things to watch for. First off, some of Bo’s recommendations don’t translate well to any environment other than an athletic team. Be prepared to modify them to suit.

And some things that Bo did back in the Sixties and Seventies aren’t things you can do today. Some of that involves privacy laws. Some of that is the way the world has changed. Be prepared to adapt that material, too.

Over the years, I’ve read lots of books by athletic coaches about how to achieve personal and business success. I’m almost always disappointed, but not this time.

This is an enjoyable and helpful book, in part because co-author John Bacon lets us see what I’m sure is the authentic Bo Schembechler. And Bo was a wise man and clear speaker.”

1.  Dennis Allen, Oakland Raiders – The Oakland Raiders played a close game against what looks like a slightly above average NFL team in the 2014 version of the New England Patriots BUT Raiders head coach Dennis Allen needs WINS and quick or Allen may find himself out of a job before we get to the halfway point of the NFL season.

Now at 0 – 3 on the season and 8 – 27 overall in three seasons as the head coach of the Raiders there is a very interesting game set-up this coming Sunday between the No. 1 Hot Seat Coach (Dennis Allen) and the No. 3 Hot Seat Coach (Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin) in London with the losing head coach no doubt ending up in a bad spot that will be very difficult to get off of in 2014 with their head coaching job intact.

Can Dennis Allen’s Raiders team possibly beat the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and then go into the bye week with some time to regroup and get ready for an October 12 game against division foe San Diego Chargers at home in Oakland?

YES….but if the Raiders lose to the Dolphins at home on Sunday we have to think there is at least a 50 – 50 chance that Dennis Allen does NOT coach the game against the Chargers on October 12 which makes this Dolphins game the MUST WIN Game of all MUST WIN Games as it pertains to the head football coach of the Oakland Raiders.

2.  Gus Bradley, Jacksonville Jaguars – It is OUR opinion here at Coaches Hot Seat that…

…..and that is why there is NO Damn Excuse for second year Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley or ANY other NFL head coach to not having his team moving forward in Year 2 on the job and the last time we checked at 0 – 3 as the Jaguars are right now in Bradley’s second-year on the job is NOT moving forward!

With the loss to the Colts on Sunday Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley is now 0 – 3 on the season and 4 – 15 in two seasons on the job and either Bradley will get the Jaguars playing winning football soon or Gus Bradley will be just another NFL assistant coach that couldn’t hack it as a head coach which is a mighty Damn long list indeed.

The BIG problem facing Gus Bradley and the Jaguars is that now at 0 – 3 they have to play at the San Diego Chargers and then against the Pittsburgh Steelers at home up next which to us means the Jaguars are looking right at an 0 – 5 start to the 2014 NFL season with plenty of tough games still to play and a second losing season almost for sure up on the board for Gus Bradley as a head coach.

Can Gus Bradley survive going something like 4 – 12 again in 2014 after posting a 4 – 12 record last season?

Maybe….BUT….Maybe Not so our recommendation to Gus Bradley is to coach like your job is on the line Gus…..because it is!

3.  Joe Philbin, Miami Dolphins – It is OUR opinion here at Coaches Hot Seat that the only way that Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin will have ANY chance to coach the Dolphins in 2015 is to take Miami to the Postseason Playoff this season and starting 1 – 2 which included an embarrassing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at home on Sunday was certainly not the way Joe Philbin NEEDED to start the 2014 season.

Even scarier the Dolphins they travel this Sunday to play the very Damn mediocre Oakland Raiders in London and a loss to the winless Raiders in this spot would really put Joe Philbin and his football team behind the 8-ball especially with the Green Back Packers coming to Miami to play the Dolphins on October 12.

The equation REALLY is very simple for Joe Philbin in 2014?

Let’s be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus.

There is no such thing as consensus science. If it’s consensus, it isn’t science. If it’s science, it isn’t consensus. Period.”
