Post Week 12 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings

TimDerutyer2381818

21.  Tim DeRuyter, Fresno State – Fresno State head coach Tim DeRutyer stated the obvious this week by saying….

DeRuyter says he and his staff ‘haven’t produced well enough, Anthony Galaviz, Fresno Bee

…but the downtrend in Fresno State football began in 2014 with a 6 – 8 record after DeRuyter won 20 game s in his first two seasons at Fresno so one must wonder what has gone wrong with the Bulldogs the last two seasons while posting a….

9 – 18

….combined record over the past two years?

Well…only ONE thing has changed between the end of the 2013 season when Fresno State was coming off 20 wins in two years and now and that was in April 2014 Tim DeRutyer signed a new and very rich contract with Fresno…..

Fresno State locks up Tim DeRuyter through 2018, Kevin McGuire, College Football Talk

…which had DeRuyter making $1.4M in 2014 and $1.5M in 2015 and for that $2.9M Dollars Fresno State has gotten a record of…

9 – 18

Money does lots of strange things to people and when someone walks out of a room having signed a contract that will pay them….

1.4M + 1.5M + 1.6M + 1.7M + 1.8M = $8 Million Dollars

…who knows what kind of effect that would have on a person BUT there is no doubt in our minds that….

The Fresno State football team was coached and played a Helluva lot harder in 2012 and 2013 seasons than they have in the last two seasons

….and the performance on the field proves that FACT and we cannot help but wonder if Tim DeRuyter can turn things around at Fresno State when it looks like to us the fire to win has gone almost completely out of the man…in our humble opinion of course.

Let’s make a note in the spot in Tim DeRuyter’s 51 st game as the head coach at Fresno State last Saturday against BYU his team got beat…

52 – 10

…and if that FACT doesn’t scare the Hell out of the fans of Fresno State football when thinking about the future then nothing will.

The 3 – 8 Fresno State football team has only a home game left against Colorado State this coming Saturday and it will be very interesting to see if CSU with a first year head coach in Mike Bobo can come into Fresno and beat a head coach in Tim DeRuyter who is completing his FOURTH year on the job….very Damn interesting to see.

OregonState188181

22.  Gary Andersen, Oregon State – Things went from bad to worse for Gary Andersen and his Oregon State football team on Saturday with the Beavers giving up over 50 points for the second straight game….this time to Washington….and now only the Civil War game remains in Eugene against the Oregon Ducks which no doubt will be another 50-plus point game for the OSU defense and also no doubt a final regular season record for the Beavers of….

2 – 10

…..in 2015 which only includes wins over Weber State and San Jose State and of course NO wins in Pac-12 play.

After seeing Gary Andersen on TV a couple of times in recent weeks it looks like to us the MONUMENTAL task he now faces to turn around the Oregon State football program has finally sunk in and how very much TOUGHER of a job OSU is compared to Wisconsin with the Pac-12 North division being incredibly hard place to operate and improve in because the other teams in the division are already playing at a very high-level and improving themselves on a regular basis now.

Further complicating matters in our opinion is that Gary Andersen is not exactly the best coach….meaning the right personality…to handle the MONUMENTAL re-building job he now faces at Oregon State because there is the very real chance OSU does not win another Pac-12 Conference game in 2016 and the reality is if OSU goes 2 – 10 again next season there is the very REAL chance it is..

Two-And-Done for Gary Andersen at Oregon State

….especially if Andersen doesn’t have a Helluva good attitude about the coming very dark days that are going to test every core of his being and every coaching skill he has ever learned.

Yes…Mike Riley left a Complete Freaking Disaster behind at Oregon State that was a football program used to winning 5 to 7 games a year in one of the easiest-going programs in college football and Gary Andersen is the exact opposite of Mike Riley in almost every way and that reality is a toxic brew that is going to make it very Damn hard for Gary Andersen to get any REAL traction with his style of coaching barring a massive turnover of the OSU roster which will take several years to happen and we

Just Don’t Know if Gary Andersen has several years to get things right at Oregon State

There’s only one way out for Gary Andersen at Oregon State and that is….

WINNING

….and it will be interesting to see if Andersen realizes that what he is doing now is wrong for the situation he finds himself in and if he alters course to try and save his job or if he plows ahead and it remains “his way or the highway” which will work at a place like Alabama where Bozo the Clown can win 8 games a year but for Damn sure is a risky as Hell strategy at a place like Oregon State.

KevinSumlin1818181

23.  Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M – The folks at LSU are fed-up with LSU losing games to Alabama and also to other schools in the SEC that the Tigers have MORE talent than so the die is now cast at LSU with Les Miles headed out the door after Saturday’s game against Texas A&M with a Helluva lot of money being owed to him after doing almost NOTHING the past three seasons in SEC play relative to the amount of talent on the LSU roster and if ALL of the above sounds familiar then you must know the same Damn thing could be said about…

Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin

….who himself is sitting on a Very Damn Mediocre record in SEC play the last THREE seasons of….

11 – 12

….which is actually WORSE than the coach he will oppose in Baton Rouge on Saturday night!

People that laugh and say that Les Miles shouldn’t be on the Hot Seat even though he has on the board…

3 – 7 record against Alabama in the his last 10 games

AND

13 – 10 record in SEC play the last 3 seasons

….should also be paying attention to what is going on with Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M because a loss on Saturday to a lame-duck coach in Les Miles whose football team has basically QUIT on Miles after being ranked No. 2 in the country just a few weeks back would be a Helluva bad look and would leave Sumlin’s last THREE years record in SEC play at…

11 – 13

…and please when you have EVERYTHING as Kevin Sumlin does at Texas A&M and you are making over $5 Million Dollars a year how in the Hell do you explain having a…

Sub .500 record in SEC play?

You CANNOT explain it is the answer to that question and we would recommend to Kevin Sumlin the following:

Son…if you get another job offer in the next couple of weeks that will pay you $5 plus million dollars a year you better Damn take it because we have gotten the word son and the word is…

“If the Aggies don’t win the SEC West in 2016 Sumlin is DONE at A&M.”

Oh…the “word” above…that comes from someone that could buy half of Houston in the morning and still have a Helluva lot of money in the bank in the afternoon!

Memo to Kevin Sumlin:  Don’t lose to Les Miles and LSU in this spot son….just a friendly suggestion!

BretBielema188181

24.  Bret Bielema, Arkansas – We are not quite sure what Arkansas AD Jeff Long had in mind when he hired Bret Bielema away from Wisconsin after the entire Bobby Petrino – John L. Smith Rolling Disaster of 2012 BUT we have to imagine that Jeff Long didn’t think that with one game left in Bielema’s THIRD season coaching the Razorbacks that the Chubby Man would be sitting on records of…

Overall: 16 – 20

SEC: 6 – 17

…and if Jeff Long did think the above records is what Bielema would have posted with one game left in his THIRD season on the job then it’s clear…

Jeff Long should be fired as the Arkansas AD this morning!

Just for comparison to the Chubby Man….Bobby Petrino posted the below records after THREE years on the job at Arkansas….

Overall: 23 – 15

SEC: 11 – 13

….and followed that up with a 11 – 2 record in 2011 and had one of the hottest teams in college football heading into the 2012 season when he took his motorcycle spill with the hot blonde and launched the Rolling Disaster that led to the Chubby Man being hired in Fayetteville.

To us it looks like the Missouri football team is spent after the on-campus stuff and Gary Pinkel’s retirement so we don’t know how much of a game that Mizzou can give Arkansas on Saturday BUT if the Tigers should happen to roll into Fayetteville and beat the Chubby Man and his Arkansas football team then Bret Bielema will find his ass on the Hot Seat for ANOTHER entire off-season and that’s no Damn fun so our recommendation…

Beat Missouri Chubby Man

…or it will be Hot Seat for you and that is a Helluva BIG Hot Seat for sure!

Atlanta818181

25.  Trent Miles, Georgia State – Georgia State got another nice win on Saturday over South Alabama to raise their record to 4 – 6 on the season with only games left against….

Troy
At Georgia Southern

….and MAYBE if Trent Miles can find ONE more win this season he can hang onto his job at Georgia State which includes Miles’ below records after THREE years on the job:

Overall: 5 – 29

Sun Belt: 3 – 18

Well…MAYBE NOT….but whatever happens at least Georgia State is playing a little better football now and let’s hope the Panthers can finish strong starting with a win over Troy on Saturday.

26.  Chuck Martin, Miami (Ohio) – Chuck Martin and his Miami (Ohio) football team got another win on Saturday against UMass which is…

3 Wins on the Year

…..and leaves Chuck Martin’s records in TWO years on the job coaching the Redhawks at….

Overall: 5 – 19

MAC: 4 – 12

….which is good if you think….

1.67 Wins a Year

…is good which means it looks like Chuck Martin will find his ass on the Hot Seat for the foreseeable future until he starts WINNING some more football games!

RonCarager181818

27.  Ron Caragher, San Jose State – Ron Caragher and his San Jose State football team got their MUST WIN on Saturday over Hawaii which raises the Spartans record in 2015 to…

5 – 6

….and now ALL that SJSU has to do is beat Boise State on Saturday to get to SIX wins on the season and judging by the way that the Broncos have played in recent weeks that is NOT out of the realm of possibility and we here at Coaches Hot Seat who have LOTS of personal and family ties to San Jose State University wish….

Ron Caragher and San Jose State GREAT LUCK against Boise State

….and why don’t you just go ahead Ron and….

Beat Those Bastards from Boise?

DougMartin281818

28.  Doug Martin, New Mexico State – New Mexico State got their THIRD straight win on Saturday over La. Lafayette to raise the Aggies record to…

3 – 7

…on the season and with another against Arkansas State on Saturday at home in Las Cruces Doug Martin will get his long-suffering ass off the Hot Seat!

Give ‘em Hell Doug Martin!

KansasFB888

29.  David Beaty, Kansas – We HATE, HATE, HATE putting first-year head coaches on the Hot Seat unless they are coaching at a school where a new head coach should come out of the box winning lots of games BUT with Kansas now sitting on a record of….

0 – 11

…and looking about as woeful as any team we have seen play in 2015 we would like to welcome…

Kansas Head Coach David Beatty to the Hot Seat!

Call us CRAZY but we really didn’t know what to make of the David Beaty hire at Kansas last year especially in the wake of the….

Complete Freaking Disaster Hire of Charlie Weis at Kansas

….so we looked at David Beaty’s background in the college and high school coaching ranks and thought something like….

“Hell….who knows what this kid will do.”

…but one does have to wonder with the success at Tom Herman at Houston if a smarter move would have been for Kansas to hire a proven offensive or defensive coordinator or maybe even to hire one of the former head coaches that were then out-of-work…..like a Houston Nutt, Rick Neuheisel, Butch Davis….or someone similar who has a track-record at least and is NOT…

A Pompous Arrogant Ass Know-It-All like Charlie Weis!

Whatever we or someone else might have done as the AD of Kansas last year it’s really a moot point now and the only thing that matters is CAN David Beaty get things turned around at KU and to that point we took the time to watch Kansas play a couple of times this season and our impression of Beaty’s Jayhawks….

Not Much

….which really says it all and IF Kansas keeps playing like they are right now into 2016 they will probably not win a game next season as well which is a Helluva spot for the Kansas football program to be in right now….

Not Very Damn Good and Nothing To Look Forward To on the Horizon

KliffKingsbury271717

30.  Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech – With a couple of coaches getting fired Kliff Kingsbury of Texas Tech is back on the Hot Seat with his football team sitting on a record of….

6 – 5

….and needing a win over Texas on Thanksgiving Day to really make the 2015 season more than just…

MEH

…..and a loss in this spot to drop the Red Raiders record down to 6 – 6 and 3 – 6 in the Big 12 play would be a very bad thing indeed and would lead to Kliff Kingsbury spending ANOTHER offeason on the Hot Seat and we know that is…

Not Very Much Damn Fun

…..and yet another reason for Kingsbury to get a win in this spot is his overall record in THREE seasons at Tech which sits at…

18 – 18

…because what coach in his right mind wants to be on the wrong side of the College Football Mendoza-Line of .500 football after THREE years on the job?

No Coach is the answer to that question!

Good Luck against Texas Kliff and if you beat the ‘Horns = Off the Hot Seat until 2016 season at least!

Coaches Hot Seat Quotes of the Day – Wednesday, November 25, 2015 – Bo Schembechler

Go Get A Win Over Ohio State Jimmy!

BoSchembechler8383

“When your team is winning, be ready to be tough, because winning can make you soft. On the other hand, when your team is losing, stick by them. Keep believing.”

And

“Those who stay will be champions”

And

“If I make a mistake, I’m going to make a mistake aggressively and I’m going to make it quickly. I don’t believe in sleeping on a decision.”

And

“A Michigan man will coach Michigan.”

And

“We want the Big 10 championship. And we’re going to win it as a TEAM. They can throw out all those great backs and great quarterbacks and great defensive players throughout the country and in this conference. But there’s going to be one team that is going play solely as a team. No man is more important than the team. No coach is more important than the team. THE TEAM! THE TEAM! THE TEAM! And if we think that way, all of us, everything that you do you take into consideration what effect does it have on my team? Because you can go into professional football, you can go anywhere you want to play after you leave here, you will never play for a team again. You’ll play for a contract. You’ll play for this. You’ll play for that. You’ll play for everything except the team. And think what a great thing it is to be a part of something that is THE TEAM! We’re going to win it. We’re going to win the championship again because we’re going to play as a team better than anyone else in the conference. We’re going to play together as a TEAM. We’re going to believe in each other. We’re not going to criticize each other. We’re not going to talk about each other. We’re going to encourage each other! And when we play as a team, when the old season is over, you and I know it’s going to be Michigan again. Michigan!”

And

Book Review: Bo’s Lasting Lessons, Three Star Leadership Blog – (Amazon.com Bo’s Lasting Lessons)

“Successful sports coaches seem to think that it’s part of their game plan to write books. After all, they’re celebrities of a sort and they know something about “winning” which is a popular topic with readers of all kinds.

Bo Schembechler is one of the most successful coaches in the history of college football. He coached Michigan football for twenty years, compiling a record of 234-65-8. During that time his teams won or tied for the Big Ten championship 13 times. He never had a losing season.

That’s why it’s somewhat amazing that it took so long for Bo’s Lasting Lessons to appear. But Bo Schembechler always did things his own way.

There are three big lessons in this book: values matter, keep the rules simple, and enforce them no matter what.

Values mattered for Schembechler. Honesty was the big one. He was going to be honest no matter what and he expected the same from his coaches, his players, and everyone else. The idea was simple: always do the right thing.

He kept the rules simple. He also made sure everyone who worked for him understood the rules. They included how players were to sit in team meetings and how they were expected to dress on road trips.

He enforced the rules he had. If anyone broke Bo’s rules there were consequences. And those consequences were as inevitable as nature.

Those are the big lessons, but there are lots of lessons and bits of wisdom scattered through the book. Here are some of my favorites.

If you’re the boss you have to accept the fact that you’re the bad cop and your assistants will be the good cops.

Don’t hire smart people and then not listen to their opinions.

Seek mentors, not money, especially in the early stages of your career.

Whatever your philosophy, whatever your standards, whatever your expectations, you establish those on day one. Don’t waste a second!

Recruit for character.

Develop leaders underneath you.

Goals can’t come from the top down. They’ve got to come from the people responsible for achieving them. Your job is to help them get there, and remind them every day what their goals are, and what they have to do to make their dreams come true.

Scuttle the star system. Give everyone a role and make it important.

Emphasize execution, not innovation.

There are lots more but you can find them for yourself when you read the book. I’ve got lots of things underlined, and Post-It notes dangle off lots of pages.

There are some things to watch for. First off, some of Bo’s recommendations don’t translate well to any environment other than an athletic team. Be prepared to modify them to suit.

And some things that Bo did back in the Sixties and Seventies aren’t things you can do today. Some of that involves privacy laws. Some of that is the way the world has changed. Be prepared to adapt that material, too.

Over the years, I’ve read lots of books by athletic coaches about how to achieve personal and business success. I’m almost always disappointed, but not this time.

This is an enjoyable and helpful book, in part because co-author John Bacon lets us see what I’m sure is the authentic Bo Schembechler. And Bo was a wise man and clear speaker.”

Les Miles and His “Home” in Baton Rouge – Post Week 12 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings – 11 – 20 Hot Seat Head Coaches – It’s Thanksgiving Week Johnny Cash….So Why Don’t You Take It Easy On These Hot Seat Coaches in the Spirit of the Holiday? Les Miles and His “Home” in Baton Rouge

LesMiles811818

Before we get to the Post Week 12 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings – 11 – 20 Hot Seat Head Coaches Analysis let us say a few words about the Les Miles situation at LSU.

As BIG fans of Bo Schembechler here at Coaches Hot Seat we have always been BIG fans of Les Miles during his head coaching stops at Oklahoma State and LSU and there is probably an argument to keep Les Miles on at LSU right now…BUT…that is NOT an argument that anyone here at Coaches Hot Seat would be making because we recognize the FACT that if David Shaw or ANY Stanford head football coach was sitting on records of…

3 – 7 against California in the last 10 Big Games

AND

13 – 10 record in Pac-12 play over the last 3 seasons

….right now below is what it would like outside the Stanford Athletics Complex would look like with Coaches Hot Seat members out-front and leading the charge!

StanfordMob

Sorry…there is NO head coach at a school like LSU or ANY school in FBS for that matter that is serious about their football and for Damn sure folks at LSU are serious about their football that can post records of…

3 – 7 against LSU’s main rival = Alabama

AND

13 – 10 in SEC play over the last 3 seasons

….and expect to hang onto his job unless of course you are a First-Class Ass Kisser of the media which Les Miles is in spades and thus why Media Flunkies from across America have come-a-running to save Les Miles from his destiny which is right now…

To No Longer Be The Head Coach at LSU

As for the Les Miles calling Baton Rouge “home” in his press conference on Monday which tugged at the heartstrings of the media which will fall for almost any Bullshit you drop on them these days…

Quite a ‘heartrending’ moment Monday when Les Miles called Baton Rouge ‘home’, Scott Rabalais, The Advocate

…we have some Breaking News for Les Miles and the Flunky Media from the REAL World:

Hell, lots of Americans that are making $40,000 a year which we remind Les Miles and the Flunky Media is about…

10% of what Les Miles makes in a MONTH or around $400,000

….that would LOVE to be working near their “home” right now or in a place where they would really LOVE to be living but unfortunately Tens of Millions of Americans are busting their asses everyday including 1 Million Plus members of the US Military that Les Miles wouldn’t know a Damn thing about making a tiny fraction of what Miles is making who we may add has made…

Around $30 Million Dollars over the last 11 seasons coaching at LSU

….and yet it’s clear to us Les Miles has NOT EARNED the enormous amount of money he has been paid by going…

3 – 7 against Alabama in his last 10 games

AND

13 – 10 SEC record the last 3 seasons

…..nor that Les Miles should be given a pass just because….”Baton Rouge is home!”

Sorry….the members of Coaches Hot Seat that served in the US Military, worked at the White House, on Capitol Hill, in Manhattan and in dozens of other major US cities across America can see Bullshit from a mile away and Les Miles son…

You Are Full of Bullshit

AND

You are an AVERAGE coach at best now

…because the game of football has passed you by and you don’t even know it…PERIOD.

The MOST telling thing to us in the last few weeks relative to Les Miles LSU football team was the way they played against Ole Miss this past Saturday after it was reported that Miles job was on the line and when we fully expected the LSU players to come out and play…

Motivated and Focused

…but instead they came out and played…

Hardly Damn Motivated and Not Focused At All

….which says EVERYTHING one needs to know about the current state of LSU football and why CHANGE is badly needed in Baton Rouge because the last time we checked….

Being the head coach at LSU is something that has to be EARNED and Les Miles hasn’t EARNED a Damn penny of his $5 Million Dollar annual salary in several YEARS now in our humble opinion and who the Hell wouldn’t want to stay in a place where folks will toss you $5 Million Dollars to be…

Nothing More Than AVERAGE?

Where the Hell do we sign-up please!

BoSchembechler8888

Oh….by the way for anyone that is paying attention….in the 10 seasons that Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler faced off against his former head coach and mentor Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes between 1969 and 1978 Bo Schembechler posted a record of…

5 – 4 – 1

….in those 10 meetings against Woody and what is Les Miles record against Alabama and Nick Saban?

3 – 7

In a court of law that would be what’s called….CASE CLOSED on why Les Miles is on his way out at LSU.

Post Week 12 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings – 11 – 20 Hot Seat Head Coaches

Post Week 12 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings

PaulJohnson989999

11.  Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech – When Paul Johnson was first hired at Georgia Tech in 2008 we had a pretty high opinion of Johnson having watched his teams play many times when he was the head coach at Navy and we fully expected the Yellow Jackets to a competitive team in the ACC on an annual basis under Johnson BUT as of 2015 in EIGHT seasons on the job Paul Johnson has won more than 7 games in just…

4 of 8 seasons at Georgia Tech

….and has won more than 7 games in just…

2 of the last 6 seasons at Georgia Tech

….and needless to say 2015 has been a Complete Freaking Disaster with Tech now at…

3 – 8 overall

1 – 7 in ACC play

Something else that we have picked-up on in the last couple of years since there are a large number of Coaches Hot Seat members living in the Atlanta, Georgia area now is that Paul Johnson isn’t exactly the most beloved man in and around the Georgia Tech football program and athletics department based upon what we have been told and last year three Coaches Hot Seat members were playing golf with a Georgia Tech-alum who was your typical….

Rambling Wreck Engineer

….who said when asked about Paul Johnson….

“To Hell with Paul Johnson”

….which he did not elaborate on except to say he didn’t know ANY Georgia Tech alums that gave “two-rips for that Bastard” which are pretty strong words from where we come from!

So what does the future hold for Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech who has posted the following records in EIGHT seasons on the job in Atlanta…

Overall:  61 – 43

ACC:  38 – 26

…..with still the Georgia Bulldogs to play this season?

We don’t have a clue BUT we are Very Damn Happy that Paul Johnson is not the head coach at Stanford!

Can Georgia Tech Georgia in Atlanta on Saturday?

Not if they play like the bunch of QUITTERS that showed up to play Miami last week!

CraigBohls19911

12.  Craig Bohl, Wyoming – Wyoming had a BYE in Week 12 and gets back at things in Week 13 with a home game against UNLV and Cowboys head coach Craig Bohl REALLY needs to beat the Running Rebels this week to get something out of this Complete Freaking Disaster of a season which has Wyoming now at…

1 – 10 overall

1 – 6 in MWC play

….and Craig Bohl with records in TWO seasons of the school of:

Overall:  5 – 18

MWC:  3 – 12

Just imagine if Craig Bohl was still at North Dakota State right now riding high with FOUR about to be FIVE straight FCS National Championships and who would have his pick of several jobs in Power 5 Conferences BUT instead….

Craig Bohl took the Wyoming job and is now stuck in Laramie with only ONE way out…

WINNING!

We still think a lot of Craig Bohl’s ability to build and lead a college football program and if we were a sitting athletic director we would take a hard look at Bohl if we were at a place like Iowa State, Syracuse, or Illinois because we do know that Craig Bohl is a very good football coach and that at the right place he will win BIG again IF he can ever get out of Wyoming.

MarkStoops919191

13.  Mark Stoops, Kentucky – Talk about a big poker hand the game that Mark Stoops is about to play against Louisville on Saturday is HUGE for the future of both Mark Stoops and the Kentucky football program because with a win over Louisville that will mean a 6 – 6 record and a trip to a bowl game and then Mark Stoops can rightfully and honestly say that…

The Kentucky Football Program is Getting Better

….but with a loss in this game Mark Stoops overall record in THREE seasons at Kentucky will stand at…

12 – 24

…..and the last Kentucky head football coach, Joker Phillips, was fired after THREE seasons on the job with an overall record of…

13 – 24

…..which would mean in our opinion at least that…

Kentucky Football has gone NOWHERE under Mark Stoops

…and that is not exactly the easiest thing in the world to sell to folks whether they be recruits, fans, alums, boosters or anyone that knows ANYTHING about college football for that matter!

Oh also this…Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino has his team now at 6 – 5 on the season and the Cardinals badly need a win in this spot as well because a 6 – 6 record will land Bobby Petrino right back on the Hot Seat heading into the offseason and we are quite Damn confident that’s not something Petrino wants to deal with over the next 9 months!

Good Luck Boys and Coach Hard….There’s A Helluva Lot at Stake After All!

CurtisJohnson888899

14.  Curtis Johnson, Tulane – After getting whipped by SMU on Saturday Curtis Johnson’s records in FOUR seasons as the head coach at Tulane now stand at…

Overall:  15 – 33

Conference:  11 – 21

…which includes ONE .500 or better season and ONE bowl game trip and we rather doubt that will be good enough for Johnson to get a FIFTH season at Tulane which is about to hire a new athletic director who will have no connections to Johnson and we all know how those situations workout with a new AD usually wanting his or her own head football coach in place going forward.

Like Les Miles at LSU, all signs point to a change for Curtis Johnson and Tulane, Ted Lewis, New Orleans Advocate

In our opinion here at Coaches Hot Seat the Tulane job is a VERY attractive job sitting in one of America’s great cities and with TONS of high school football talent within a four hour drive of the school AND with a new on-on-campus football stadium…..Yulman Stadium

YulmanStadium8888

We can think of a Helluva lot of Very Damn Good Football Coaches that would LOVE to get a shot at coaching the Tulane Green Wave and it will be interesting to see who Tulane goes after and eventually hires if they do fire Curtis Johnson.

MikeRiley1181818

15.  Mike Riley, Nebraska – There are a only a few things that REALLY get our ire up here at Coaches Hot Seat and for those slow on the uptake “ire” is defined by Merriam-Webster as….

Ire: intense and usually openly displayed anger”

…and some of those few things are….

Rich and/or Privileged Bastards Treating People Badly

Millionaire Football Coaches Crying like Babies

People That Get Jobs They Had No Damn Business Getting

….and by any measure we can think of Mike Riley did NOTHING in his head coaching career at Oregon State or San Diego Chargers to EARN the Nebraska head coaching job besides….

Having A Complete Buffoon as an Athletic Director at Nebraska that Doesn’t Know His Ass From the Side of A Barn

…and any review of Mike Riley’s win/loss records with the Beavers and Chargers proves that FACT:

Oregon State:  93 – 80

San Diego Chargers :  14 – 34

With the above being said Mike Riley landed at place in Nebraska where….

Bozo the Clown could average SEVEN wins a season easy

….and where ANY AVERAGE football coach could…

Win EIGHT games a season easy

….and a ANY GOOD football coach could…

WIN NINE games a season easy

….which brings us to Mike Riley who we would place in between an…

Average and Good Football Coach

….so if that opinion holds to form when Mike Riley is finished at Nebraska he will have averaged winning….

8.5 Wins A Year

….which is a place that even counting the FOUR disastrous years of Bill Callahan and from Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne’s coaching tenures when college football teams rarely played over 12 games a year Nebraska has over the past 50-plus years averaged winning…

9.58 Wins A Season

….which if recalculated statistically to account for the additional 2-plus games teams have the opportunity to play in today’s college football is…

10.75 Wins A Season

….is there anyone on Planet Earth that believes Mike Riley will average…

10.75 Wins A Season at Nebraska?

Well there has to be at least….

A Complete Buffoon as an Athletic Director at Nebraska that Doesn’t Know His Ass From the Side of A Barn

…who thinks so or he wouldn’t have hired Mike Riley who averaged winning…

6.64 Wins A Season at Oregon State!

Now at 5 – 6 on the season Nebraska only has left a home game against undefeated Iowa and checking the Vegas Boys….

The Hawkeyes are a 2 point favorite in Lincoln

….which means the Vegas Boys see this as an EVEN game which makes since because….

Nebraska has MUCH more talent on its roster than Iowa

….and by all rights SHOULD win this football game which means a loss in this spot would be…

Complete Freaking Disaster for Mike Riley and Nebraska Football

…and a loss by Iowa would be…

Complete Freaking Disaster for Kirk Ferentz and Iowa Football!

Should be a GREAT game in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday!

MarkRicht818181

16.  Mark Richt, Georgia – At a dinner last week in San Francisco with many Coaches Hot Seat members in town for the Big Game between Cal and Stanford one Coaches Hot Seat member had an interesting thought on why so many Georgia fans are committed to keeping Mark Richt as the head coach at Georgia even though by ANY measure we can think of has been…

AVERAGE AT BEST

….relative to what a Powerhouse Football Program that Georgia can and should be and that thought as postulated by the Coaches Hot Seat member who lives in the Atlanta area was:

Coaches Hot Seat Member #1: “It’s Stockholm Syndrome…plain and simple.”

Coaches Hot Seat Member #2: “Stockholm syndrome? For Mark Richt and Georgia fans….come on….how did you come up with that?”

Coaches Hot Seat Member #1 (picks-up phone, searches, reads definition of Stockholm Syndrome): “Stockholm syndrome, or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with the captors.”

Coaches Hot Seat Member #4: “You may have something there…like that Idiot Darryl from Columbus that calls into the Finebaum Show. He shows many classic symptoms of Stockholm Syndrome and Hell there was that guy I ran into at the bar in Original El Taco in Virginia-Highlands who was a BIG Georgia fan and was about as Damn Stockholm Syndrome as one could be towards Mark Richt.

Coaches Hot Seat Member #1: “See….Mark Richt has the Georgia fans captive and he can lose to pitiful Florida team after pitiful Florida team and hang onto his job….Stockholm Syndrome plain and simple.”

Coaches Hot Seat Member #2: “You may be right….but I just think Georgia fans have gotten comfortable with being AVERAGE and if Mark Richt keeps going to church and drops into a diner every once in awhile to eat breakfast he could probably stay at Georgia for as long as he wants without EVER winning another SEC title.”

Whether the Georgia fans have Stockholm Syndrome relative to Mark Richt or not a place like the state of Georgia where there are Hundreds of High School Football Players each year that can play on the FBS level we see no Damn reason at all why….

Mark Richt has NOT won an SEC Title since the 2005 season

….which might not be able to be explained by Stockholm Syndrome for the reason that Mark Richt is still the head coach of the Bulldogs but for Damn sure…

Georgia Football is AVERAGE and we don’t see that changing anytime soon!

Certainly Paul Johnson and his ragtag and of QUITTERS are not MAN ENOUGH to beat Georgia on Saturday which makes the two main FBS programs in the state of Georgia…

AVERAGE = Georgia

AND

QUITTERS = Georgia Tech

17.  Paul Petrino, Idaho – It was not surprising that Idaho got whipped at Auburn on Saturday by the score of 56 – 34 which leaves the Vandals records in 2015 at…

3 – 8 overall

2 – 5 in Sun Belt play

…..and Paul Petrino’s overall record in THREE years at the school at…

5 – 29

…with only a game at Texas State left on the schedule.

If Idaho loses to Texas State to drop Paul Petrino’s THREE year record to…

5 – 30

….and will that record lead to a coaching change at Idaho?

We don’t have a Freaking Clue to the answer to that question nor do we really care either BUT Robb Akey seemed to have the Vandals playing better than Paul Petrino ever has….in our humble opinion of course!

FAUStadium

18.  Charlie Partridge, Florida Atlantic – Charlie Partridge and his Florida Atlantic football team gave a Very Damn Un-Motivated Florida team ALL they wanted on Saturday and with that loss Partridge’s records in TWO years at the school drop to…

Overall:  5 – 18

CUSA:  4 – 1

…..which makes us wonder…

If Florida Atlantic played like they did against Florida all season what would the Owls record be in 2015?

We haven’t a clue to that question but for Damn sure we know that Charlie Partridge and his football team REALLY need to win at Old Dominion on Saturday or…

5 – 19

….in TWO seasons it will be and that’s NOT GOOD Charlie…that’s just NO DAMN GOOD!

WestPointFB81919

19.  Jeff Monken, Army – Two years ago in September 2013 a handful of Coaches Hot Seat members were at West Point to see Stanford play Army in football and after seeing the Army football program up-close our opinion was then and is still today…

Army Football is just Too Small, Too Slow, and Too Weak

….to win football games on any kind of regular basis and new head coach Jeff Monken who took over Army at the beginning of the 2014 season and has posted an overall record of…

6 – 17

…at Army hasn’t really changed our assessment on the current state of Army football which looks to us be recruiting and playing at a…

Dramatically Lower Level Than either Air Force or Navy Football

….which begs the question:

What the Hell is wrong with Army Football?

It’s just our opinion which is a very Damn biased opinion coming from lots of US Navy Veterans here at Coaches Hot Seat BUT that opinion is…

The US Navy and US Air Force are right now are in dramatically better places than the US Army in thousands of different ways and the general malaise that dominates the US Army after a decade-plus of the American Republic fighting Bogus Wars in the Middle East has had a direct impact on the quality of students entering West Point and the caliber of football player that Army is able to recruit to West Point….in our opinion of course!

IF one our children showed an interest in joining the US Military we would advise them in the strongest way possible to join the US Navy first if they didn’t get seasick and to join the US Air Force if they weren’t afraid of flying but for…

God’s Sake don’t join the US Army and that also goes for NOT attending West Point!

Now that’s just our opinion and we are sure there are some GREAT kids at West Point right now BUT the US Army is a beat-up organization from top to bottom and thus it’s no Damn surprise to anyone here at Coaches Hot Seat that the Army football team is a Damn mess as well!

Army is now at 2 – 9 on the season only has Navy left to play on December 12 and we don’t believe there is a chance in Hell that Army can beat this very Damn good Navy team and with that we can only say…

Go Navy!

RonTurner281818

20.  Ron Turner, Florida International – Ron Turner has now coached for THREE seasons at FIU and has records on the board of…

Overall:  10 – 26

CUSA:  7 – 17

…..which to us is BAD but we don’t have a Freaking Clue what the above records mean to the folks that are in positions of power at FIU and we remind everyone Ron Turner has a record of…

1 – 2

….against cross-South Florida rival Florida Atlantic which is NOT GOOD either considering the current state of FAU football which is also NOT GOOD!

Coaches Hot Seat Quotes of the Day – Tuesday, November 24, 2015 – Pat Dye

PatDye738

“Believe in honest, positive dissent.”

And

Football is not an “I” game. It’s a “we” game.”

And

“Nothing has changed about what makes a winner. A winner works his butt off and is dependable. He’s not always the most talented, but he gives everything on every play.”

And

“At Auburn, practice is Hell. But when you line up across the big, fast, smart, angry boys from Florida, and Georgia, and Alabama, where there is no quality of mercy on the ground and no place to hide, you’ll know why practice is Hell at Auburn.”

And

Don’t wait to be a great man. Be a great boy.”

And

“I don’t believe in miracles. I believe in character”

And

“Life is short, so don’t waste any of it carrying around a load of bitterness. It only sours your life, and the world won’t pay any attention anyway.”

And

“If you’re a football coach, criticism comes with the territory. If it tears you up, you better get into another profession.”

Before the 1981 Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn, Paul “Bear” Bryant and Pat Dye (Pat Dye coached for Paul Bryant for nine years on the Alabama staff):

Pat Dye:  “Coach Bryant, before you start hugging me, you ought to know that my boys are fixing to get after y’all’s ass.”

Paul Bryant:  “You ain’t trying to scare me now, are you, Pat?”

Pat Dye:  “No sir, because I know you don’t get scared. I’m just telling you what we’re fixing to do.”

And

“A game like this, Alabama players will remember it for the rest of their lives. Auburn players…it’ll eat their guts out the rest of their lives.” Former Auburn coach Pat Dye to a reporter after Van Tiffen kicked his 52 yard field goal to beat Auburn in 1985.

It’s Thanksgiving Week Johnny Cash….So Why Don’t You Take It Easy On These Hot Seat Coaches in the Spirit of the Holiday? On Second Thought…Give These Millionaire Hot Seat Coaches Hell Mr. Cash and Everyone Have A Great Thanksgiving!

Post Week 12 Coaches Hot Seat Rankings

LesMiles811818

1.  Les Miles, LSU – Football is the ultimate game of “What Ifs” and the Biggest “What If” in the room regarding embattled LSU head coach Les Miles is this…

“What if the Miami Dolphins had made the Playoffs in 2006 and Nick Saban had stayed in south Florida and missed out on taking the Alabama job?”

NickSaban9999

“What If” indeed because the TRUTH is when Nick Saban returned to the SEC in 2007 after two years in Miami to coach a down-and-out Alabama football program LSU was riding high with Les Miles at the helm which saw Miles finish with the following after the 2007 season after THREE years in Baton Rouge:

Overall Record:  34 – 6

SEC Record:  19 – 5

1 SEC Title

1 Bogus BCS National Championship

Since Nick Saban returned to Alabama in 2007 Les Miles’ record against Saban now stands at…

3 – 7

…including the 2011 Bogus BCS National Championship Game loss and in the last THREE seasons Les Miles has posted the following very AVERAGE record in SEC play at LSU….

13 – 10

So why would a school be ready to jettison a coach that has a $15 Million Dollar buyout to hire a new coach that will no doubt command $6 to $7 Million Dollars a year for a 6 to 7 year contract?

Because LSU has lost FIVE straight games to Alabama under Les Miles

AND

Les Miles has a 3 – 7 record against Alabama and Nick Saban in the last 10 Games

AND

The LSU football program EASILY has more talent than EVER team it faces in the SEC each season except for Alabama and over the past THREE seasons Miles has posted a record in SEC play of…

13 – 10

It’s our firm opinion here at Coaches Hot Seat that managers should move to fire underperforming people in whatever industry or line of work they are in BEFORE the crack-up happens because it causes less damage to the entire organization when a leadership problem is nipped in the bud which can lead to Long-Term damage to something like a college football program and we don’t need to tell anyone at LSU what being off in the wilderness feels like as in the years before Nick Saban arrived in Baton Rouge in 2000 which in 11 seasons between 1989 and 1999 saw the following happen:

8 Losing Seasons

No SEC Championships

….and a Total Freaking Disaster albeit a football program in LSU that has…

Everything and Anything ANY Head Coach would need to win SEC and National Championships on a Regular Basis

A great question for any manager to ask himself or herself when considering firing someone is the following:

“Would the competition be happy or sad if I fired this person?”

And if the above question was answered SAD meaning the competition loved that person staying in their position the next question a manager must ask himself or herself is:

“What person could I hire that the competition would say….”Son-of-a-Bitch…they hired that Bastard….Hell, we will really have to go to work now!”

In our opinion….

Nick Saban would LOVE to see Les Miles stay at LSU and Mark Richt stay at Georgia because that is TWO potentially POWERHOUSE SEC football programs he want have to worry about as long as those two head coaches are in place and we can think of….

A Handful of Head Coaches that Nick Saban would HATE to see at LSU and Georgia

….and if Les Miles is indeed on his way out it’s the job of the folks at LSU to hire someone that is going to make Nick Saban’s life difficult which right now…

ZERO Head Coaches in the SEC are doing!

Only a Very Average Texas A&M team remains on LSU’s schedule and what SHOULD be a great game to help decide the SEC West Champion is instead…

Who really gives a Damn Game

….and that in a nutshell is the problem at LSU….AND……Texas A&M right now.

DarrellHazell18818

2.  Darrell Hazell, Purdue – The “word” is that Purdue head coach Darrell Hazell will get a FOURTH season as the head coach of the Boilermakers after posting the following records in THREE seasons on the job with only the Indiana game left to be played in 2015….

Overall:  6 – 29

Big Ten:  2 – 21

Those SIX wins by Darrell Hazell in THREE seasons at Purdue were against….

Indiana State – FCS
Western Michigan – MAC
Southern Illinois – FCS
Illinois
Indiana State – FCS
Nebraska

….and let’s not forget that Darrell Hazell was hired after the last Purdue head coach Danny Hope was fired after two-straight .500 or better seasons and two bowl game trips so PLEASE save us the Bullshit that Darrell Hazell took over a Complete Disaster at Purdue because the TRUTH is Hazell took over a Purdue Football program that had gone to a bowl game in….

12 of the previous 16 seasons

….AND had posted a record in Big Ten play in those previous 16 seasons of…

66 – 62

Only Indiana remains on Purdue’s schedule which is sitting on a record of 2 – 9 right now which looks to be 2 – 10 once Saturday comes and goes and then it’s on to 2016 for Purdue Football and no doubt fans of the Boilermakers are chomping at the bits to get their hands on some season tickets for next year’s team!

HA!

CUFootballField

3.  Mike MacIntyre, Colorado – Much like Darrell Hazell at Purdue the Colorado Buffs head coach is also in his THIRD season on the job in Boulder and has posted a Pac-12 Conference record in those THREE seasons of…

2 – 24

….but in the SEVEN seasons before MacIntyre took over at CU the Buffs has been to…

1 Bowl Game

….and had won….

13 Big 12 and Pac-12 Conference Games

….so no doubt in our minds not only was Colorado in much worse shape than Purdue THREE years ago but Colorado also plays in a much tougher conference overall in the Pac-12….in our humble opinion of course!

Still…in our humble opinion…Colorado today almost THREE seasons after Mike MacIntyre took over the Buffs is only SLIGHTLY better than they were in 2012 at least on the field of play but we will say from what we have observed first hand on the University of Colorado campus the football program is in better shape overall BUT what feeds the bulldog is WINS and Mike MacIntyre is just flat-out not winning enough and that why he is on a Roaring Hot Seat right now.

The 4 – 8 overall and 1 – 7 in Pac-12 play Buffs have only left a road game at Utah which will be a next to impossible game for Colorado to win so with a loss that will leave Mike MacIntyre’s records in THREE seasons at Colorado at….

Overall:  10 – 27

Pac-12:  2 – 24

Uhhhh….Not So Damn Good Mike MacIntyre because we are still talking about Colorado Football where for Damn sure in our opinion a coach should be able to post a .500-plus record by his THIRD season on the job…in our humble opinion of course!

4.  Scott Shafer, Syracuse – Scott Shafer was the defensive coordinator in Jim Harbaugh’s first year at Stanford before moving on to Michigan to join Rich Rodriguez’s staff and there are a number of people here at Coaches Hot Seat that have…

Very Damn Definitive Opinions on Scott Shafer

…..and his ability to coach defense and lead young men BUT after much discussion we are going to leave those…

Very Damn Definitive Opinions on Scott Shafer

….out of this blog and focus on what Scott Shafer has done at Syracuse in THREE years on the job after taking over a pretty good program from the last Orange head coach Doug Marrone:

Overall:  13 – 23

ACC:  6 – 17

By contrast in FOUR seasons at Syracuse Doug Marrone posted records of…

Overall:  25 – 25

ACC:  11 – 17

Our opinion on Syracuse football having watched them play under both Marrone and Shafer…the Orange football program is clearly going backwards and with only a game left against woeful Boston College who has a head coach also sitting on the Hot Seat in Steve Addazio it’s hard to know what to make of Syracuse football right now except that it’s NOT VERY DAMN GOOD!

CharlieStrong288118

5.  Charlie Strong, Texas – One of the more interesting things we have going here at Coaches Hot Seat is that we have a few folks that were trained by YOUR Government to watch people in either in person or on video and by watching their face, arm and body movements AND also listening very closely to what they are saying come up with amazingly accurate analysis of what the person is thinking, or worrying about, or considering when they are being watched either in person or on video. While it’s not always easy to watch a foreign leader and ever fully determine what he or she is really thinking it has been very easy for one of those Coaches Hot Seat members to watch someone here at Coaches Hot Seat on video and then come up with an analysis and then check that against what the Coaches Hot Seat member was actually thinking and guess what….

Our talented and well-trained Coaches Hot Seat members have an almost 100% accuracy on their analysis

….which has given us lots of insight into what head coaches and athletic directors have REALLY been thinking over the last NINE football seasons which brings us to…

Texas Head Coach Charlie Strong

….who a couple of Coaches Hot Seat members have been watching very closely this season and their analysis of Charlie Strong is as of November 23, 2015….at least the part of the analysis we are willing to put into this blog is:

“Charlie Strong knows he has gotten himself into a Helluva spot where the expectations are HIGH and his ability to dramatically impact the Texas Football program in a meaningful way anytime soon are LOW especially in a Big 12 Conference that is unrelenting in the pressure applied by the offenses of other Big 12 schools which leaves Texas Football with the following conundrum…either the Texas offense starts scoring a Helluva lot of points and quick or Texas Football will a middle-of-the-pack Big 12 football program for years into the future and Charlie Strong knows it.”

The above should be scary enough to fans of Texas Football but there is something else going on as well and it’s something we have not considered very much until the last few weeks but it’s something that could dramatically impact Charlie Strong’s ability to build a championship football program again in Austin following on what Mack Brown was able to do for a decade-plus and that other thing going on is….

Will Charlie Strong and his Texas coaches be able to personally connect with the very cliquish Texas high school coaches who are very unique and very different in our opinion than the high school coaches that Charlie Strong worked with and recruited players from in Florida and elsewhere around the southeastern United States?

This is very simple to understand…..if Texas football high school coaches will not recommend and send their best players to Austin then Texas has Little Damn Chance to become a major college football power again or even to get back to the top of the Big 12 on a regular basis as we fully expect Texas Football to be at EVERY season which brings us to the…

2016 Rivals.com Team Recruiting Rankings

2016Rivals.comTeamRecruitingRankings

…which shows that as us right now Texas’ 2016 Recruiting Class is ranked…..54 th in the country? What the Hell?

Sorry…but in our opinion a head coach in his THIRD year at Texas should have a recruiting class ranking in the Top 5 and by comparison Nick Saban had the No. 1 Recruiting Class according to Rivals.com in his second season starting in 2008…followed by the No. 1 class in 2009….in his THIRD season on the job and what has been Charlie Strong’s Recruiting Class Rankings at Texas?

2014: 20
2015:  12
2016:  54 currently

Let’s go to Charlie Strong’s records at Texas in his SECOND year on the job….

Overall:  10 – 13

Big 12:  8 – 8

…and the Horns still have to play this season…

Texas Tech
At Baylor

Damn…..if Texas loses to Texas Tech at home to fall to 4 – 7 on the season and has to play at Baylor to end 2015 which looks a Helluva lot like a 4 – 8 season then more than just the folks here at Coaches Hot Seat will start wondering…

Just where in the Hell is this going for Charlie Strong at Texas?

SteveAddazio1181818

6.  Steve Addazio, Boston College – This coming Saturday Steve Addazio’s Boston College football team which is on a streak of SEVEN straight losses will play a Syracuse football team coached by Scott Shafer that is on a losing streak of EIGHT straight losses which is the ultimate…

Roaring Fire Hot Seat vs. Roaring Fire Hot Seat Coaches Match-Up

…and a loss in this spot by BC on the road at the Carrier Dome would leave the Eagles records in 2015 at…

Overall:  3 – 9

ACC:  0 – 8

…and Steve Addazio’s records in THREE seasons coaching at Boston College at…

Overall:  17 – 20

ACC:  8 – 16

Just for the Hell of it let’s look at the Winning Percentage of the last FOUR head football coaches at Boston College:

Tom O’Brien (1997 – 2006):  .625

Jeff Jagodzinski (2006 – 2007):  .714

Frank Spaziani (2009 – 2012):  .431

Steve Addazio (2013 – 2015):  .459

Got Going Straight Backwards Boston College?

Still one of the Stupidest Moves in recent college football history was former Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo firing BC head coach Jeff Jagodzinski after the 2007 season sitting on a winning percentage of .714 and TWO appearances in the ACC Championship Game but the issue at hand here is can Steve Addazio really survive going…

0 – 8

….in ACC play in his THIRD season on the job when is a time when head coaches should be showing improvement instead of stagnation with their football program?

Since Boston College football is an afterthought in every Damn sense of the word AFTERTHOUGHT Steve Addazio could probably go 0 – 12 and hang onto his job which is a Helluva gig if you can get it!

KevinWilson77-393x530

7.  Kevin Wilson, Indiana – Kevin Wilson and his Hoosiers got their MUST WIN on Saturday against the crumbling Maryland Terrapins which gives Indiana….

5 Wins in 2015

…and with only a game left at Purdue on Saturday we are going to go out on a limb and predict…

An Indiana WIN on Saturday over Purdue

…which will get the Hoosiers to 6 wins and a postseason bowl game which will mean since we are talking about Indiana Football here that will get head coach Kevin Wilson off the Hot Seat….BUT…if Indiana should happen to lose to Purdue on Saturday …

It’s Over for Kevin Wilson at Indiana!

Coach ‘em up Kevin or….

KyleFlood821818

8.  Kyle Flood, Rutgers – Kyle Flood and his Rutgers football team beat Army on Saturday which has become akin to beating NO ONE in recent years and that raises Rutgers record in 2015 to 4 – 7 with only a home game left against woeful Maryland and with a win that would leave Kyle Flood’s records in FOUR seasons at the school at….

Overall:  26 – 22

Conference:  13 – 17

…which we would call that AVERAGE at best especially considering the pretty good football program that Flood took over at Rutgers from Greg Schiano in 2011.

Can Kyle Flood survive both a suspension for an academic related issue AND a losing season in his FOURTH year on the job at Rutgers?

Not if we were the athletic director at Rutgers for Damn sure!

GusMalzahn11818

9.  Gus Malzahn, Auburn – Since Auburn lost to FSU in the 2013 – 2014 Bogus BCS National Title Game in January 2014 Gus Malzahn has posted records at Auburn of…

Overall:  14 – 10

SEC:  6 – 9

….and with the Mighty Alabama Crimson Tide headed to Auburn on Saturday for the annual Iron Bowl we here at Coaches Hot Seat tried to put ourselves in the position of Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs who has basically been around or working at Auburn University for his entire life who lists in his bio on the Auburn Athletics website the following five strategic goals…

“Winning, graduating student-athletes, managing the department’s fiscal affairs, complying with SEC and NCAA rules and providing a positive gameday experience.”

…..keeping in mind that over the last TWO seasons Auburn has spent…

Over $80 Million Dollars on the Auburn Football program

….and Auburn has….

14 wins to show for it and a losing record in SEC play

…and ONLY 8 of those wins came over FBS teams with .500 or better records!

$80 Million for EIGHT wins over FBS teams with .500 or better records!

To get down to brass tacks….

Auburn has 14 wins the last TWO seasons…

2 of those wins are over FCS teams

6 of those wins are over FBS teams with losing records

8 of those wins are over FBS teams with .500 or better records

Oh…Auburn’s record the last two seasons against FBS teams with .500 or better records?

9 – 9

Damn….a 9 – 9 record the last two seasons against FBS teams with .500 or better records after spending…

$80 Million Dollars!

That’s $8.89 Million Dollars Per Win over FBS teams with .500 or better records at Auburn the last TWO seasons!

Does Auburn have ANY chance to beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl on Saturday?

No….NOT A Chance in Hell which brings us to this obvious question:

If Alabama beats Auburn by “X” amount of points or more in Saturday’s Iron Bowl it will lead to Gus Malzahn getting fired shortly thereafter?

28 Points

If Alabama beats Auburn by 28 or more points Gus Malzahn will no doubt in our minds be fired and Auburn AD Jay Jacobs will shortly thereafter be on the phone to Jimbo Fisher to offer him…

$1 Dollar MORE than what LSU is offering Jimbo Fisher which by our guess will be around….

$7.25 Million Dollars A Year on a Six Year Contract!

In many ways Jay Jacobs is in an impossible situation because Jacobs must know that Nick Saban would be THRILLED to keep Gus Malzahn at Auburn for as long as Damn possible because without a SUPERIOR quarterback the Auburn offense is the easiest offense to defend in the SEC…..BUT……what can Jacobs do if Alabama only beats Auburn by 10 to 14 points but keep Gus Malzahn around for another year and just hope the Hell things go better in 2016?

Not much really…which brings us to Auburn’s offensive gameplan against Alabama to which we can only say to Gus Malzahn….

Do what Nick Saban HATES the most and you might have a shot at winning which is…

Go Fast, Play Fast, and Attack the Middle of the Field

…which is the ONLY Damn thing that will get some of the Alabama defenders away from the line of scrimmage which is the ONLY way a team beats Alabama.

You give us a week and we will have an offensive gameplan to BEAT Alabama…and yet it seems head coaches in the SEC making Millions of Dollars a year….

Have No Damn Clue How To Even Challenge the Alabama Defense Forget About Beating Alabama!

Idiots…Just Way Damn Overpaid Idiots!

MikeLondon271717

10.  Mike London, Virginia – Mike London’s Virginia team got a nice win Saturday over a floundering and collapsing Duke team to raise the Cavs records in 2015 to…

4 – 7 overall

3 – 4 in ACC play

…with only a home game against Virginia Tech left in Frank Beamer’s last game coaching the Hokies which with these following records on the board coaching for SIX seasons at Virginia….

Overall: 27 – 45

ACC: 14 – 33

…..will no doubt be Mike London’s last game coaching at Virginia as well!

Good Luck to both Mike London and Frank Beamer in this Battle of Virginia Game!

“There’s no one thing that’s true. It’s all true.”

And

“Never confuse movement with action.”

And

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”

And

“Hesitation increases in relation to risk in equal proportion to age.”

And

“The individual, the great artist when he comes, uses everything that has been discovered or known about his art up to that point, being able to accept or reject in a time so short it seems that the knowledge was born with him, rather than that he takes instantly what it takes the ordinary man a lifetime to know, and then the great artist goes beyond what has been done or known and makes something of his own.” Death in the Afternoon

And

“There are some things which cannot be learned quickly, and time, which is all we have, must be paid heavily for their acquiring. They are the very simplest things and because it takes a man’s life to know them the little new that each man gets from life is very costly and the only heritage he has to leave.” Death in the Afternoon

And

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”

And

“The first and final thing you have to do in this world is to last it and not be smashed by it.”

And

“There is nothing else than now. There is neither yesterday, certainly, nor is there any tomorrow. How old must you be before you know that? There is only now, and if now is only two days, then two days is your life and everything in it will be in proportion. This is how you live a life in two days. And if you stop complaining and asking for what you never will get, you will have a good life. A good life is not measured by any biblical span.” For Whom the Bell Tolls

And

And

“A city is where you can sign a petition, boo the chief justice, fish off a pier, gaze at a hippopotamus, buy a flower at the corner, or get a good hamburger or a bad girl at 4 A.M. A city is where sirens make white streaks of sound in the sky and foghorns speak in dark grays. San Francisco is such a city.” Herb Caen

And

“San Francisco is gone. Nothing remains of it but memories.” Jack London

And

“San Francisco has always been my favorite booing city. I don’t mean the people boo louder or longer, but there is a very special intimacy. When they boo you, you know they mean you. Music, that’s what it is to me. One time in Kezar Stadium they gave me a standing boo.” George Halas

And

“I grew up in Marin County north of San Francisco, and in the 1950s and ’60s it was a natural paradise.” Huey Lewis

And

“You know what I like about San Francisco? The women are beautiful, fashionable and smart. San Francisco is one of the only cities I like to visit. I love New York and Chicago – I studied there, and L.A. has the same people as New York.” LeRoy Neiman

And

“You know what it is? San Francisco is a golden handcuff with the key thrown away.” John Steinbeck

And

“San Franciscans are very proud of their city, and they should be. It’s the most beautiful place in the world.” Robert Redford

And

“San Francisco is 49 square miles surrounded by reality.” Paul Kantner

I’d start down at Fisherman’s Wharf with someone I really like and end with a romantic dinner and a ride over the Golden Gate Bridge. There’s no city like it anywhere. And, if I could be there with the girl of my dreams, that would be the ultimate.” Larry King

And

“Leaving San Francisco is like saying goodbye to an old sweetheart. You want to linger as long as possible.” Walter Kronkite

And

“I don’t think San Francisco needs defending. I never meet anyone who doesn’t love the place, Americans or others.” Doris Lessing

And

” I don’t like San Francisco. I love it!” Dorothy Lamour

And

“I like the fog that creeps over the whole city every night about five, and the warm protective feeling it gives…and lights of San Francisco at night, the fog horn, the bay at dusk and the little flower stands where spring flowers appear before anywhere else in the country…But, most of all, I like the view of the ocean from the Cliff House.” Irene Dunne

And

“We’re crazy about this city. First time we came here, we walked the streets all day – all over town – and nobody hassled us. People smiled, friendly-like, and we knew we could live here……Los Angeles? That’s just a big parking lot where you buy a hamburger for a trip to San Francisco……And the beautiful old houses and the strange light. We’ve never been in a city with light like this. We sit in our hotel room for hours, watching the fog come in, the light change.” John Lennon and Yoko Ono

And

“Cities are like gentlemen, they are born, not made. You are either a city, or you are not, size has nothing to do with it. I bet San Francisco was a city from the very first time it had a dozen settlers. New York is “Yokel”, but San Francisco is “City at Heart”.” Will Rogers

And

“San Francisco is one of the great cultural plateaus of the world — one of the really urbane communities in the United States — one of the truly cosmopolitan places and for many, many years, it always has had a warm welcome for human beings from all over the world.” Duke Ellington

And

And

“You wouldn’t think such a place as San Francisco could exist. The wonderful sunlight there, the hills, the great bridges, the Pacific at your shoes. Beautiful Chinatown. Every race in the world. The sardine fleets sailing out. The little cable-cars whizzing down The City hills~. And all the people are open and friendly.” Dylan Thomas

12 College Football Head Coaches Facing CANNOT LOSE Games In Week TWELVE – “They got a name for the winners in the world….I want a name when I lose…they call Alabama the Crimson Tide….call me Deacon Blues…Deacon Blues.”

“They got a name for the winners in the world….I want a name when I lose…they call Alabama the Crimson Tide….call me Deacon Blues…Deacon Blues.”

Enjoy the GREAT Steely Dan performing Deacon Blues!

For the folks here at Coaches Hot Seat there is one clear leader for Head Coaches that CANNOT LOSE in Week 12 and that is of course….

1.  David Shaw, Stanford

NCAA Football: Wake Forest at Stanford

…who for Damn sure CANNOT LOSE to Cal on Saturday night on The Farm because losing the Big Game is just flat-out…

Un-Damn Acceptable!

With a win in the Big Game Stanford will have qualified for its…

THIRD Pac-12 Title Game Appearance in FOUR Seasons

…and would play the Pac-12 South Champion for the Pac-12 Conference Championship which if won would be Stanford Football’s…

THIRD Pac-12 Title in FOUR Seasons

….which would be a Mighty Damn Impressive run indeed for Stanford Football but then none of that happens unless Stanford BEATS Cal to win the…

BIG GAME!

StanfordFootballStad181881

Stanford Football has won FIVE straight Big Games against Cal and 6 of the last 9 so why in the Hell not make it…

SIX Straight Big Games

AND

7 of the last 10 Big Games

…..and we can keep this….

…where it belongs which is on The Farm in Stanford, California!

Stanford1818181Axw

Go Stanford BEAT Cal!

LesMiles811818

2.  Les Miles, LSU vs. Ole Miss – For all the people that scoff at the idea that Les Miles could be on the Hot Seat or only a loss from Ole Miss from being run out of Baton Rouge let us all remember that we are talking about…

LSU Football

….here where Bozo the Clown could win…

8 Games A Year EASY

….and where for Damn sure the head coach better…

Split the series with Alabama at least

…and what is Les Miles’ record against Alabama in the last 10 meetings against the Crimson Tide?

3 – 7

Sorry…3 – 7 against Alabama not only doesn’t feed the bulldog at LSU it will get your ass run out of town and very simply….

If LSU loses to Ole Miss on Saturday we would recommend that Les Miles agent start inquiring about other head coaching jobs…maybe in Big Ten Country…because it will be…..

….for Les Miles at LSU!

HughFreeze8181919

3.  Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss vs. LSU – On the flipside of the LSU – Ole Miss game on Saturday a loss by the Rebels would drop the Ole Miss record to 7 – 4 on the season with still a game at Mississippi State and a loss to LSU and Hugh Freeze will wake-up on Monday morning with his rear-end on the….

Hot Seat

….and with a loss to Mississippi State also to finish at 7 – 5 or 3 – 5 in the Rebels last 8 games Hugh Freeze will in late November find his rear-end on a…

Roaring Hot Seat!

Our recommendation to Les Miles AND Hugh Freeze: Neither of you can afford to lose this game boys so coach HARD!

KevinSumlin1818181

4.  Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M vs. Vanderbilt – When you are making $5 Million Dollars a year playing your home games in a PALACE which is the case for Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin your ass better be…

Winning A Helluva Lot of Football Games

….and in his FOURTH season coaching the Aggies Kevin Sumlin is now sitting on a record in SEC play of….

16 – 14

….and if A&M loses to Vanderbilt on Saturday and LSU in the last game to finish at….

7 – 5 overall

3 – 5 in SEC play

….in 2015 we would recommend Kevin Sumlin have another job lined-up because he might not make it back to College Station from Baton Rough still the head coach of the….

Texas A&M Fighting Aggies!

GusMalzahn11818

5.  Gus Malzahn, Auburn vs. Idaho – Oh this one’s pretty simple to figure out….

If for some CRAZY reason that Auburn lost to Idaho on Saturday with the Tigers something like 34 point favorites over the Vandals

….Gus Malzahn will be fired before the clock strikes Midnight on The Plains and Will Muschamp would be coaching Auburn in the Iron Bowl BUT since there is little chance in Hell of Idaho beating Auburn….right?….this is all kind of silly….but then….Idaho might just give FCS Jacksonville State a good game AND Jacksonville State took Auburn into overtime earlier this season…..Hmmmmm…..Oh Hell let’s not even consider Auburn losing to Idaho BUT if it happens Gus Malzahn will need….

Boxes…Lots of Damn Moving Boxes….and in a Helluva hurry!

MarkRicht818181

6.  Mark Richt, Georgia vs. Georgia Southern – Although many here at Coaches Hot Seat were raised in what would be called “secular” homes today meaning we were usually playing golf or some other sport on Sunday mornings instead of sitting in a church pew which our fathers to man detested because they did not enjoy being told how to live their lives by other people our parents made Damn sure we had a good grounding in religious history because it’s impossible for someone to understand world history without the religions that played a major role in helping to make-up what human beings are today.

With the above being said with Mark Richt being a “good Christian man” we are confident Mark understands as we do the basic tenets of the “trials and tribulations” that goes hand-in-hand of being a Christian which basically boils down to this:

Life isn’t fair and it’s often cruel and instead of crying about life not being fair or trying to make excuses for a tough predicament Christians understand that “trials and tribulations” that human beings go through make them tougher and help create important traits inside of human beings including perseverance and character and in the end…Hope….the hope that what one has learned when going through the “trials and tribulations” will provide hope for a better future while becoming a tougher person for when those “trials and tribulations” show up again…as they always do in this thing we call life.

BillWalsh71818

It’s not just Christians that are very public about their faith that think in the above way because one of our favorite quotes by Coach Bill Walsh is….

“When you stand and overcome a significant setback, you’ll find an increasing inner confidence and self-assurance that has been created by conquering defeat. Absorbing and overcoming this kind of punishment engenders a sober, steely toughness that results in a hardened sense of independence and a personal belief that you can take on anything, survive and win.”

….which no doubt flows straight from the Judeo-Christian ideas and beliefs that form a major bedrock of the American Republic and getting back to Mark Richt we have a sneaking suspicion here at Coaches Hot Seat that Mark rather enjoys having his ass roasted from time-to-time by us here at Coaches Hot Seat because it reminds him in his very blessed life that….

Life isn’t fair and there is a Helluva lot to be learned by going through tough times

…which brings us to the Georgia Southern – Georgia game on Saturday and the reality that IF Mark Richt loses this game….

His rear-end will be climbing the Coaches Hot Seat Rankings AGAIN!

….which we have a sneaking suspicion brings a smile to Mark Richt’s face…not going up the Coaches Hot Seat Rankings mind you…but that he has yet another “trial and tribulation” to fight through!

Good Luck against Georgia Southern Mark!

BretBielema188181

7.  Bret Bielema, Arkansas vs. Mississippi State – To show how wide the swing could have been on the Arkansas season in 2015 the Razorbacks could be sitting on records of….

9 – 1

OR

2 – 8

….right now and with a record of 6 – 4 on the board and with these two games left to play….

Mississippi State
Missouri

….it’s Very Damn Important for Bret Bielema and Arkansas to win these last TWO games at home because improvement on their 6 – 6 record in 2014 is paramount and beating Mississippi State in this spot would give Arkansas a leg-up in the SEC West and a lot of momentum heading into their last game of the year against Missouri.

SteveAddazio1181818

8.  Steve Addazio, Boston College vs. Notre Dame – Is there a chance in Hell the 16-point underdogs Boston College Eagles can beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Fenway Park on Saturday?

No…not a chance in Heaven or Hell in our opinion and with a loss Steve Addazio will be in his own little Hell with BC on a SEVEN game losing streak and with only wins on the board against…

Maine
Howard
Northern Illinois

Oh..with a loss on Saturday to Notre Dame Steve Addazio’s overall record in THREE seasons at Boston College would drop to…

17 – 20

….and that is the kind of record that can get your ass fired….in our humble opinion of course!

DanaHolgorsen17171

9.  Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia vs. Kansas – We don’t give the Kansas Jayhawks much chance to beat Crazy Boy Dana Holgorsen’s West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday BUT if KU did win this game to drop WVU’s record in 2015 to….

5 – 5

….with still games left for West Virginia against…

Iowa State
At Kansas State

….things could get mighty Damn interesting in Morgantown BUT now…

No Damn way that West Virginia loses to Kansas….right?

Crazy Boy Dana Holgorsen better hope the Hell not!

KevinWilson77-393x530

10.  Kevin Wilson, Indiana vs. Maryland – After opening with FOUR straight wins to start the season Kevin Wilson’s Hoosiers are now sitting on a record of…

4 – 6

…with only games left against…

At Maryland
Purdue

….and if Kevin Wilson is EVER going to get Indiana to a .500 record and a bowl game then this is the year because Maryland with an already fired head coach and Purdue in Total and Complete Disarray there really is….

No Damn Excuse for Indiana to NOT win its last TWO Games

….so come on Kevin Wilson….

Bring these TWO wins home son!

ToddGraham81818

11.  Todd Graham, Arizona State vs. Arizona – What is that famous Winston Churchill quote….

“Nothing in life is so exhilarating as to be shot at without result.”

….which must be how Todd Graham felt after the Washington game last week after falling behind early to UW when it looked like it might be ANOTHER loss for the Sun Devils for awhile which would have dropped ASU’s record to…

4 – 6

…with still games left against Arizona and at California BUT Arizona State did beat Washington and now the Devils are…

5 – 5

…with games left against Arizona and at California BUT if Todd Graham’s football team happened to lose to Arizona and then at California…..Oh…..

Todd Graham’s ass would be on a ROARING HOT SEAT come late November!

Uhhh….don’t lose to Arizona Todd Graham!

KyleFlood821818

12.  Kyle Flood, Rutgers vs. Army – We don’t think there’s much chance Rutgers could lose to a below average Army team that just lost at home to Tulane BUT if Rutgers did lose in this spot….in our opinion…

The Kyle Flood-era at Rutgers would be over

…..thus why Army is a CANNOT LOSE Game for Kyle Flood as is the last game of the season against Maryland.

In our humble opinion of course!

Coaches Hot Seat Quotes of the Day – Friday, November 20, 2015 – Bill Walsh

We miss you Coach Walsh.  Go Stanford BEAT Cal!

BillWalsh888181

BillWalsh811888

Bill Walsh’s Five Don’ts

“1. Don’t ask, “Why me?”

2. Don’t expect sympathy.

3. Don’t bellyache.

4. Don’t keep accepting condolences.

5. Don’t blame others.”

And

“If you see players who hate practice, their coach isn’t doing a very good job.”

And

“The absolute bottom line in coaching is organization and preparing for practice.”

And

“A resolute and resourceful leader understands that there are a multitude of means to increase the probability of success. And that’s what it all comes down to, namely, intelligently and relentlessly seeking solutions that will increase your chance of prevailing in a competitive environment. When you do that, the score will take care of itself.”

And

“I’ve observed that if individuals who prevail in a highly competitive environment have any one thing in common besides success, it is failure—and their ability to overcome it.”

And

“The ability to help the people around me self-actualize their goals underlines the single aspect of my abilities and the label that I value most—teacher.”

And

“Failure is part of success, an integral part. Everybody gets knocked down. Knowing it will happen and what you must do when it does is the first step back.”

And

“When you stand and overcome a significant setback, you’ll find an increasing inner confidence and self-assurance that has been created by conquering defeat. Absorbing and overcoming this kind of punishment engenders a sober, steely toughness that results in a hardened sense of independence and a personal belief that you can take on anything, survive and win.”

And

“Great players and great companies don’t suddenly start hunching up, grimacing, and trying to “hit the ball harder” at a critical point. Rather, they’re in a mode, a zone in which they’re performing and depending on their “game,” which they’ve mastered over many months and years of intelligently directed hard work. There’s only so much thinking you can isolate and focus on during that kind of extreme competitive pressure. It has to be tactical more than a conscious effort to really “try harder.” You just want to function very well, up to your potential, effortlessly—do what you already know how to do at the level of excellence you’ve acquired—whether in making a presentation or coaching a game or anything else.”

And

“Everybody’s got an opinion. Leaders are paid to make a decision. The difference between offering an opinion and making a decision is the difference between working for the leader and being the leader.”

And

“We all have in our mind inspiring examples of individuals who persevered beyond the point of reason and common sense and prevailed. We tend to ignore the more numerous examples of individuals who persisted and persisted and finally failed and took everybody down with them because they would not change course or quit. We ignore them because we never heard about them.”

And

“You must be the best version of yourself that you can be; stay within the framework of your own personality and be authentic. If you’re faking it, you’ll be found out.”

And

“The trademark of a well-led organization in sports or business is that it’s virtually self-sustaining and self-directed—almost autonomous. To put it in a more personal way, if your staff doesn’t seem fully mobilized and energized until you enter the room, if they require your presence to carry on at the level of effort and excellence you have tried to install, your leadership has not percolated down.”

And

“Strong leaders don’t plead with individuals to perform.”

And

“Make each person in your employ very aware that his or her well-being has a high priority with the organization and that the well-being of the organization must be his or her highest professional priority.”

And

“The highest-paid, most talented people that you can go out and hire will not perform to their potential unless they feel as if they are part of something special—a family that treats them right.”

And

“It was always my goal to create and maintain a working environment both on and off the field that had a sense of urgency and intensity but did not feel like we were in constant crisis mode.”

And

“In evaluating people, I prize ego. It often translates into a fierce desire to do their best and an inner confidence that stands them in good stead when things really get rough. Psychologists suggest that there is a strong link between ego and competitiveness. All the great performers I’ve ever coached had ego to spare.”

And

“Extra effort,” in whatever form it takes (mental, physical, emotional), cannot be sustained without eventual damage and diminishing returns. There has to be a very acute awareness on your part as to the level of exertion and the toll it’s taking on those you lead.”

And

“By instinct we—leaders—want to run hard all the time; by intellect we know this is not possible. Reconciling those two positions in the context of leadership is an ongoing challenge.”

And

“Concentrate on what will produce results rather than on the results, the process rather than the prize.”

And

“Clear thinking and overly charged emotions are usually antithetical.”

And

“People matter most—more than equipment, investors, inventions, momentum, or X’s and O’s. People are at the heart of achieving organizational greatness.”

And

“Afford each person the same respect, support, and fair treatment you would expect if your roles were reversed. Deal with people individually, not as objects who are part of a herd—that’s the critical factor.”

And

“If you care about how you’re perceived by others, including the public, it’s good to remember the following: Criticism—both deserved and undeserved—is part of the territory when you’re the one calling the shots. Ignore the undeserved; learn from the deserved; lick your wounds and move on.”

And

“Calculated risks are part of what you do, but the idea that something completely crazy will work just because it’s completely crazy is completely crazy.”

And

“One of the common traits of outstanding performers—coaches, athletes, managers, sales representatives, executives, and others who face a daily up/down, win/lose accounting system—is that a rejection, that is, defeat, is quickly forgotten, replaced eagerly by pursuit of a new order, client, or opponent.”

And

“Nothing is more effective than sincere, accurate praise, and nothing is more lame than a cookie-cutter compliment.”

And

“If you are worthy of emulation, you have left an unbelievable legacy. He was a great coach, a great friend, and I’m going to miss him terribly.” Former coach Dick Vermeil at Coach Bill Walsh Memorial Service

And

“I came to the San Francisco 49ers with a specific goal – to implement what I call the Standard of Performance. It was a way of doing things, a leadership philosophy, that has as much to do with core values, principles, and ideals as with blocking, tackling, and passing; more to do with the mental than with the physical.”

And

“The culture precedes positive results. It doesn’t get tacked on as an afterthought on your way to the victory stand. Champions behave like champions before they’re champions: they have a winning standard of performance before they are winners.”

And

“For me, the road had been rocky at times, triumphant too, but along the way I had never wavered in my dedication to installing – teaching – those actions and attitudes I believed would create a great team, a superior organization. I knew that if I achieved that, the score would take care of itself.”

And

“For me the starting point for everything – before strategy, tactics, theories, managing, organizing, philosophy, methodology, talent, or experience – is work ethic. Without one of significant magnitude you’re dead in the water, finished. I knew the example I set as head coach would be what others in the organization would recognize as the standard they needed to match (at least, most of them would recognize it). If there is such a thing as a trickle-down effect, that’s it. Your staff sees your devotion to work, their people see them, and on through the organization.”

And

“In building and maintaining your organization, place a premium on those who exhibit great desire to keep pushing themselves to higher and higher performance and production levels, who seek to go beyond the highest standards that you, the leader, set. The employee who gets to work early, stays late, fights through illness and personal problems is the one to keep your eye on for greater responsibilities.”

And

“All successful leaders know where we want to go, figure out a way we believe will get the organization there, and then move forward with absolute determination. We may falter from time to time, but ultimately we are unswerving in moving toward our goal; we will not quit. There is an inner compulsion – obsession – to get it done the way you want it done.”

And

“Victory is produced by and belongs to all. Winning a Super Bowl results from you whole team not only doing their individual jobs but perceiving that those jobs contributed to overall success. The trophy doesn’t belong just to a superstar quarterback or CEO, head coach or top salesperson. This is an essential lesson I taught the San Francisco organization: The offensive team is not a country unto itself, nor is the defensive team or the special teams, staff, coaches, or anyone in the organization separate from the fate of the organization. WE are united and fight as one; we win or lose as one.”

Four Leadership Tips From Bill Walsh from…

The Score Takes Care of Itself:  My Philosophy of Leadership, Amazon.com

1. Making The Best Of What You Have

“What assets do we have right now that we’re not taking advantage of?”

E.g: Walsh took inventory of his Bengals’ struggling offense which was undersized (meaning running the ball was a big challenge) and not capable of passing for long yardage (quarterback Virgil Carter could not throw very far) (though he could throw decently for short yardage).

Walsh then took stock of what he had to work with in terms of field real estate and had an uh-huh realization that they had 53.5 yards of width on the field (about half the distance of the length of the field) and the availability of 5 potential receivers.

Thus the West Coast Offense was born: the idea of throwing more often, to more receivers, for short yardage.

2. Good Leaders Give a Healthy Mix of Positive Criticism (not just negative/constructive criticism).

“If you’re growing a garden, you need to pull out the weeds, but flowers will die if all you do is pick weeds. They need sunshine and water. People are the same.

They need criticism, but they also require positive substantive language and information and true support to truly blossom.”

3. Good Leaders Look For These Five Qualities In Their Hires

1. A fundamental knowledge of the area they’ve been hired to manage
2. A relatively high — but not manic — level of energy and enthusiasm and a personality that is upbeat, motivated and animated.
3. The ability to discern talent in potential employees.
4. An ability to communicate in a relaxed yet authoritative — but not authoritarian — manner.
5. Unconditional loyalty to both you and other staff members.

4. The Four Most Powerful Words In Leadership

“I believe in you” (or equivalent words of your own).

Walsh writes that even Joe Montana (who already had a bunch of confidence) benefited from his coach telling him he believed in him.

Providing confidence to your team is perhaps the most powerful lever you can pull to help them optimize their performance.

And Walsh adds: And nobody will ever come back to you later and say “thank you” for expecting too little of them.
