The Retirement of Steve Spurrier = Head Ball Coach
Several Coaches Hot Seat members happened to be in the San Francisco Bay area last night after a weekend of watching college football and taking their families to see the US Navy and Blue Angels at Fleet Week over and around San Francisco Bay and they were having dinner last night at a Cheesecake Factory in Marin County just north of San Francisco when the news broke that…
It wasn’t lost on those Coaches Hot Seat members that they were also together having dinner together in that same Cheesecake Factory in Marin County in November 2011 when it was announced that Joe Paterno had been fired by Penn State and both the Paterno firing and Spurrier retirement left all of us with that shocked feeling that imprints on one’s brain the time and place where one first learned about those two events. Both Joe Paterno and Steve Spurrier are LEGENDS in the history of college football in America and both are true American Originals which is saying something in a world where so many people are afraid to be who they really are…no worries on that front with JoePa and the Head Ball Coach who were true to themselves and WINNERS in every sense of the word to the end!
We could write a Helluva lot in this spot about Steve Spurrier right now and we have written a Helluva lot about the Head Ball Coach over the past NINE college football seasons that Coaches Hot Seat has been following this great game BUT by far TWO Coaches Hot Seat members first encounter with Coach Spurrier is the most memorable story of all:
In the spring of 1990 two Coaches Hot Seat members were serving in the US Navy in Jacksonville, Florida and were looking for a house to rent and answered an ad in the newspaper…..this was long before the Internet was invented by Al Gore young folks so yes a newspaper….so they called up the phone number and the guy renting the house said he would be there that afternoon and to just drive over and see the place.
The two Coaches Hot Seat members drove over to the rental house which was just a couple of blocks from the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville Beach, Florida and found no one out front and no one answered the door so they walked around back and there they saw an older man moving a garbage can that had what looked like an empty keg in it with several other empty kegs also sitting on the back deck. This older man turns towards the two Coaches Hot Seat members when he sees them and he has on a t-shirt that looked something like this:
The two Coaches Hot Seat members introduced themselves and then one said to the older man:
Coaches Hot Seat Member: “You a big Florida football fan?”
Older Man: “Hell yes….been one since I was a student there in the 1960s. You guys know who Steve Spurrier is?”
Coaches Hot Seat Member: “The new Florida head football coach.”
Older Man: “Very good son. That’s right and I was at Florida when Steve won the Heisman Trophy and we are going to win a Helluva lot of football games once Steve gets things rolling in Gainesville! So you boys looking for a house to rent?”
Coaches Hot Seat Member: “Yes, sir and we are huge college football fans.”
Older Man looks over the two young men who are clean-cut and obviously in the US Navy: “Great….go ahead and look around the house and bring me out a cold beer that is in the fridge when you come back out. We had a party here last night and there are a few cases of beer left in the fridge that you two can keep if you rent the house.”
The two Coaches Hot Seat members both said “Great” and then took a quick look around the house which at $1,000 a month was a bargain with it being only two blocks from the beach so they came back out and told the Older Man that they would take the house and they all sat on the back deck and talked about college football and drink cold beers for the next few hours.
To make a long story short the Older Man took the two Coaches Hot Seat members down to Gainesville in August when Florida football started their first Fall camp under Steve Spurrier and a “friend” of the Older Man who worked in Florida athletic department and who will remain nameless for obvious reasons to at least some folks took the two Coaches Hot Seat members out to the practice field where they got to meet Steve Spurrier and they watched the Gators practice for awhile.
Not long after watching Spurrier working with the Florida quarterbacks one Coaches Hot Seat member said out loud to no one in particular:
“Florida is going to be throwing the ball all over the field under Spurrier and that is going to create chaos in the SEC.”
As many in the media have pointed out over the last 25 years….Steve Spurrier’s Fun-N-Gun offense at Florida did just that….created chaos…and what GREAT fun it was to watch and follow the Head Ball Coach for the past 25-plus years and make that 40-plus years for the Coaches Hot Seat members that are just barely old enough to remember Spurrier playing quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers for nine seasons between 1967 and 1975 after being selected in the First Round and Third overall in the 1967 NFL Draft.
There is so very Damn much that dozens of Coaches Hot Seat members would like to write in this spot about Coach Spurrier BUT what all of those sentiments boil down to is this….

….over the past few years and please save us the harp music on how “Sarkisian needs help because he is going through so much” because we know a Helluva lot of people that have been through things that Sarkisian cannot possibly imagine and they did not drink their asses out of their dream job not that the Clown Show that has become USC Athletics has helped this entire situation since we here at Coaches Hot Seat and many USC alumni have known about issues with Sarkisian going back to the Spring of this year at least!
A few of us here at Coaches Hot Seat first met Steve Sarkisian in either 2000 or 2001 either right when or just before he took a job on Pete Carroll’s staff at USC and unlike the….
Pompous Arrogant Ass Lane Kiffin who in our opinion would sell out EVERY child in America to promote his Own Sorry Ass
….Sarkisian was immediately likeable and did a nice job navigating the difficult job of both working for Pete Carroll and with that Pompous Arrogant Ass Lane Kiffin during those USC years.
We have LOTS of folks here at Coaches Hot Seat that have been drinking alcohol since the late 1970s at least since the drinking age back then was still 18 and although we have had plenty of crazy nights drinking beer and liquor to a man when it comes time to do work whether that work was in the US Military, at the White House, on Capitol Hill or in thousands of private sector positions it was TIME TO DO WORK and just like Sarkisian many of us have been through Very Damn Tough situations where the last Damn thing someone would want to do is start drinking heavily or taking pills or doing anything to take the focus off working through the Damn problems each and every Damn day!
Yes….we are PISSED at Steve Sarkisian and anyone that has been reading the Coaches Hot Seat Blog over the past nine college football seasons has also noticed us referencing “issues” with Sarkisian especially when he was at Washington although we never believed it was anything like what has happened to Sarkisian at USC.
We do hope Steve Sarkisian gets his life straightened-out although we cannot imagine he will coach again at USC or hold any head coaching position for a Helluva long time which brings us to a short story which we hope people in positions like the head football coach at USC will take to heart:
A couple of years ago a member of Coaches Hot Seat got promoted to the CEO position of a medium-sized company and as always he joined us at the annual Coaches Hot Seat Lake Tahoe Clambake in August of each year which includes a good amount of drinking in and around the general public at many different resorts, restaurants, and golf courses on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. What all of us noticed almost immediately with our long-time friend who was now the CEO of a decent-sized company was that he no longer did things in public that would reflect badly on the company he now led and one night we asked him about this and his response was perfect…
“I am the CEO of a company now and my behavior must reflect the values and expectations of employees and company I now lead.”
And a Coaches Hot Seat member added to that: “And you don’t want to get your ass fired for something someone filmed or saw you do in public!”
Bottom-Line Lesson: When you take on the position of CEO or head football coach for that matter your life is no longer just your own because you now are the public face and leader of that company or football team and if you don’t want the responsibility that comes with being the CEO or a head coach then for Damn sure don’t take the job….BUT….if you do take that job have some Damn class and act like a LEADER!
Memo to Steve Sarkisian: Get well son but for Damn sure you let us down and a Helluva lot of other people down and you should be ashamed. The Good News is you can start anew TODAY and build your life from this moment going forward and to do anything else but face and take-on your problems head-on is to be a COWARD and the Steve Sarkisian we know is No Damn Coward! Bret Bielema, Arkansas – The Coaches Hot Seat members sitting together in San Francisco watching college football on Saturday couldn’t help but laugh when they saw Bret Bielema run to the locker room at the halftime of the Arkansas – Alabama game thinking he was actually in the game against Bama leading 7 – 3.
A Coaches Hot Seat member actually said watching Bielema: “That Fat Ass actually thinks his team has a chance to win this game! Hilarious!”
Of course, for anyone with a working brain it was obvious that Nick Saban was playing the Arkansas game very low key with the only one of two threats to beat Alabama left on the Tide’s schedule this coming Saturday at Texas A&M (LSU is the only other team on Bama’s schedule it could lose to) and Saban wasn’t about to waste a lot of emotion whipping the Razorbacks when a pedestrian win would both serve his interests to get his team ready for A&M and not stress his team out as they head into a tough stretch of games. Most great football coaches know that a team can only get really HIGH for two maybe three games in each regular season and if you count Ole Miss as one game, A&M will be two games, and LSU will be three games which is why the SEC is such a Helluva tough conference because that still leaves the Iron Bowl against Auburn and the SEC Championship Game!

10. Mark Helfrich, Oregon – Before Mark Helfrich took over the Marketing and lately Winning Machine that Mike Bellotti and Chip Kelly built at Oregon Helfrich was on the staff of head coaches at TWO Power 5 schools…
Dirk Koetter at Arizona State
Dan Hawkins at Colorado
…and in those EIGHT years that Helfrich was on the above staffs working as an offensive assistant Arizona State and Colorado posted a combined record of….
53 – 58!
Of course, Dan Hawkins had a much worse record at Colorado than Dirk Koetter had at Arizona State BUT both were fired from their head coaching jobs for average or worse than average coaching stints with Mark Helfrich pulling one of the great assistant coaching moves in football history getting out of Colorado only two years before Dan Hawkins was fired at Colorado and landing at Oregon which was just on the upswing under Chip Kelly.
Did Mark Helfrich do anything in his four seasons as an offensive assistant at Oregon to deserve the head coaching job with the Ducks?
Well….Oregon is a little like a Medieval Kingdom in our opinion which is funded by serfs…think people making slave wages across Asia…making Nike products and when Chip Kelly hit the road to take the Philadelphia Eagles job the last Damn thing that was going to happen at Oregon was an open coaching search because to bring in someone from outside the medieval kingdom that didn’t know where all the landmines are located and who you just CANNOT piss off under any circumstance would have been too Damn risky and thus why Mark Helfrich is the head coach at Oregon today.
Sure enough Mark Helfrich kept the machine that Mike Bellotti and Chip Kelly built rolling in his first two seasons BUT there were signs of some small cracks along the way which in 2015 has turned into MASSIVE wide open holes that is for the most part hidden from public view since the Oregon football program is secreted away from fans of Oregon football and everyone else for that matter in a way that would make the Fascist Thugs that ran the USSR jealous if they were still around to see how things operate in Eugene.
Very simply in our opinion….Oregon Football is run by Fascist Thugs that believe a fan taking a picture of the Oregon football team practicing is akin to robbing a bank but the former US Military Intelligence Officer’s here at Coaches Hot Seat aren’t scared of people that are scared of someone who made his fortune making products paying slave wages and then marking up those products 500% plus to sell to the American People that need good jobs at good wages right here in America…and in the struggling state of Oregon for that matter…and from our checking-around Eugene a few weeks back it is our opinion….
The Oregon Football Program is in a Total and Complete Meltdown Right Now

Mark Richt, Georgia vs. Tennessee – A few decades ago when Coaches Hot Seat members were in college and long before political-correctness came to dominate American college campuses with Candy Ass Pussies running around saying all kinds of Crapola and laying all kinds of Candy Ass Pussy rules on anyone that moves a college professor could directly challenge his students in order to get them to THINK about the world and use their BRAINS which is the ultimate goal of a college education….well….it used to be which is to learn how to THINK!
One of our college professors did gets us to THINKING one day in class when in a philosophy course he asked for every student of any religion that believed in a Heaven or afterlife once you were dead to raise their hands. In that class that day about 80% of the students raised their hands with the other 20% falling into a category that could broadly be described as something like…
“Hell, I don’t have a clue what happens after we die!”
The philosophy professor then wrote down the number of students that believed in a Heaven or afterlife on the board which we will call 35 for this discussion and proposed the following which he did in order to get his students to THINK:
Philosophy Professor: “Consider for a moment that a large alien spaceship arrives on the Earth filled with people that look remarkably like humans but not totally like humans and they request to hold a press conference at the United Nations in New York City where leaders of countries from around the world and the media can ask questions of the aliens that remember….look remarkably like humans but not totally like humans. The aliens are of course allowed to have their meeting with nations from around the world and the media at the United Nations and they open this event by saying the following:
“We are your forefathers. We populated this planet tens of thousands of years ago with human beings and have watched from afar as you have developed over these many thousand years and we have returned now because you have reached the point that many advancing civilizations do when they either kill everyone on the planet with the very powerful weapons they have developed or they move forward as intelligent beings. Now let me ask specifically the 35 people that raised their hands that believe in life after death or some kind of Heaven that you have been taught in your particular religion what would be your individual reaction to what these alien beings said especially if they were able to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that what they were saying was true? Would you still worship the God you were raised to worship and still follow your religion and also more importantly for our discussion in this classroom would you live your life any other way now that you knew that there was no Heaven or Hell that would judge your life and actions upon your death, but instead your life on this Earth was the only thing you were going to get?
Amazingly that day in that classroom some students were not able to even with just a potential scenario to detach their minds from what they had been taught….some would say brainwashed….during their entire lives as it pertains to their particular religion to answer the Philosophy Professor’s questions honestly because they could not cross the threshold of even the idea that what they believed had been proved could be complete bunk relative to their religion….at least in the proposed scenario.
Of course the most important question posed by the Philosophy Professor which is a question as old as Socrates is a fundamental question of our lives on this Earth which is:
“What is the good life and why is living a good life so Damn important?”
Which brings us to Georgia head coach Mark Richt who as everyone knows and has been said by thousands is a…
“Good Christian Man”
….and thus let’s place Mark Richt in the above scenario and assume what would Mark Richt’s answers be to the Philosophy Professor’s questions:
In our opinion like most devoted Christians Mark Richt would be shaken to the core to learn there was no God…that Jesus Christ was not a prophet…that the religion he had built his life around was Bogus and that there was no Heaven that he and others would eventually go to but then that’s not the most important issue here…is it?
No it isn’t, because the most important question our Philosophy Professor posed that day was….
Would you now live your life any other way if you learned the religion you believed in was bogus?
In our opinion…for the most part Mark Richt would continue to live what Socrates called the good life doing good deeds, helping the poor, being a good neighbor, a good father and husband, and generally being a “good Christian” and right there is where the rubber meets the road on where Mark Richt has struggled in recent years at Georgia most importantly not winning an SEC Conference Title since the 2005 season.
Mark Richt….in our opinion of course….even when confronted with evidence that the religion he believed in was Bogus would not change the way he lived his life in any way because Mark Richt like a lot of us believes that the way he lives his life is not just a “Christian” thing to but more importantly the “Right” thing to do in our short life on this Earth and that living Socrates’ proposed “good life” is an essential mission of our lives on this Earth whether we believe in Jesus Christ or another deity or not.
What then does ALL of the above have to do with Mark Richt’s Georgia football team getting its’ ass whipped by Alabama last Saturday and facing a CANNOT LOSE game against Tennessee in Knoxville this coming Saturday?
As we just proved above….in our opinion mind you….Mark Richt would not change his life one iota if he learned that his Christian religion was Bogus BUT Mark Richt would in our opinion suddenly have a different perspective on the importance that fans of Georgia football place upon the Bulldogs winning football games and how Very Damn Important it was for Mark Richt as the head coach at Georgia to win….

….in his short life on this Earth because it would bring so much happiness to the fans of Georgia football. Suddenly the fog that seems to have overtaken Mark Richt in recent years which has seen in our opinion the burning desire to win that used to exist within Richt having almost been extinguished completely which also in our opinion flows directly from how he views football through the prism of his Christian faith which no doubt places football way down the totem pole in importance.
Sorry Mark Richt….you can’t be the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs if winning….
