As it pertains to a college head football coach being on the Hot Seat this is by far the most important Ranking because it is the fans, alumni, boosters, and administration that the head coach is currently coaching at that will determine if a coach is retained or not and the bottom line on being on or off the Hot Seat is….WINS AND LOSSES.

Yes, the above 2009 Winningest Active Coaches Ranking at the Coach’s Current School is very interesting to look over, but let’s take this down to a practical level and see what the winning percentages were for coaches that got fired in 2009. There were 22 Head Coaching Changes in 2009, but there were only 12 coaches that were fired from their jobs.

Of course, 3 of the above coaches: Mike Leach, Jim Leavitt, Mark Mangino were fired for off-the-field or other unknown and/or as of yet in our opinion unproven reasons, so in reality there were only 9 head coaches in 2009 that were fired for the on-field performance of their football teams.
The average winning percentage of the 9 coaches that were fired in 2009 was .430. What does that mean? That means that any coach at or below the .430 winning percentage mark is at risk of losing his job and we would actually increase that number to .500 level, which we believe to be the winning percentage mark at where coaches might find themselves in danger of getting fired. There are of course exceptions to the .500 winning percentage rule, coaches that took over down programs, coaches at schools that are not traditional winners in college football, coaches at schools with high academic requirements, etc., but we still believe that a very good general rule for head football coaches in college football is that to keep yourself off the Hot Seat and your job intact you need to keep your head and team above the .500 mark.
Looking back at the 2009 Winningest Active Coaches Ranking at the Coach’s Current School there are now 55 coaches (not counting the recent coaches changes in the game) that are at or below the .500 mark and that means there are a lot of coaches that have the potential to both be on the Hot Seat and face their job being in danger.
The one big exception to the .500 winning percentage rule on the upside is when a head coach is at a school where any random person off any street in America could put up a winning record, and we count approximately 15 to 25 schools that currently fall into that category. If you want to coach at a big-time school, then you will need to win big, and that is fact that coaches must realize and accept when they take big-time jobs.
We find the Winning Percentage of Head Coaches to be the most interesting Ranking we do here at Coaches Hot Seat because it is our firm belief that a winning coach can win anywhere, with any school, with any team, with any group of players. As Bum Phillips said about Paul “Bear” Bryant:
“Bryant can take his and beat yours, and then he can turn around and take yours and beat his.”
Any coach that doesn’t agree with Bum Phillips sentiments about Bryant and in coaching in general is only lying to himself.
Last head coach hired….
With the hiring of Ruffin McNeill at ECU yesterday we can now work on the 2009 Final Coaches Hot Seat Rankings and finish up our 2009 Final Grades for all the coaches and a few other things we have been working on. There are so many things we would like to do here at Coaches Hot Seat to cover head coaches and the game of college football but we are limited by the amount of time we have in each day to dedicate to CHS.
One thing that we would like to say that was brought up on Martin Luther King Day when some of us here at CHS got together for a few cold brews is that the quality of writing at all levels, the national writers at companies like ESPN, Sporting News, Rivals.com, College Football News, Fanhouse.com, and several others, the regional and local newspapers, and even for many bloggers across the United States is just incredibly high right now. America’s greatest strength is our brainpower tied to our creativity and right now we have a few hundred writers and columnists covering the game of college football that not only are very good writers but also have the ability to think about things out of the box and in creative/critical ways. Kudos to the great writers that cover the game of college football.
If the United States of America is going to get off the mat, and from what we see out in the economy right now we have a big chunk of our populace that is in deep trouble or headed to deep trouble, we are going to need to harness our great brainpower and creativity to face and solve the toughest problems facing our Republic. Right now the Untied States’ political system in gridlock and many things like common sense reform of our health care system, reshaping energy of all types in the US, and basic regulatory reforms that can both protect the financial system and the American people are not being acted up in our nation’s capital because both political parties care more about holding power and getting reelected rather than serving the American People.
It is the job of elected leaders to serve the American People, not the special interests that have the time and money to operate and spend time in Washington DC and bribe our elected leaders with “campaign contributions.” Our Republic’s political system is broken, but if the political hacks that have created the current mess where our country is in hock to foreign countries and the Wall Street bastards that don’t give two rips about the American People and dozens of other big problems that threaten the future of our country, maybe should just exit stage left and just DO NO MORE HARM!
Speaking of DOING NO MORE HARM, out here in the Real World, far from the meaningless machinations of Washington DC, all of us here at Coaches Hot Seat get asked why we are moving our companies and families out of the state of California. No one from California with a lick of sense asks us that question, because anyone that is not running or working for a very large firm that is generating billions in revenues and profits, understands completely that it has become almost impossible for small and medium sized business owners of all types to even turn a profit in California anymore. For all of the Liberals and Democrats out there that think making a profit is somehow evil, we remind all of you that if a company cannot make a profit then it cannot grow, and if a company cannot grow then it cannot hire more employees, and if companies of all types across all different kinds of industries cannot hire new employees then that is very bad for the overall economy and in a nutshell THAT IS CALIFORNIA. Yes, because companies of all types can no longer consistently turn a profit in California anymore the hiring of new employees, especially the hiring of blue collar workers has come to a standstill and it is so very ironic that the people most responsible for the destruction of California, the liberals and Democrats, are the very one’s that claim to be on the side of the working man and woman. How pitiful, but don’t count on these idiots figuring out the havoc that they wreak on families across California with their stupidity anytime soon.
What Arnold Schwarzenegger and the bureaucrats in the California state government do not understand is that the massive amounts of regulations, the high taxes on individuals and companies and the very real reality that California is at war with business in the state, is causing great damage to the people in the state and whether the folks driving this “Hell Train” called California know it or not, it is only going to get worse.
Easily, the worst law passed in the United States in recent memory is AB 32, the state of California’s attempt to stop “global warming,” which is beyond stupid because even if global warming was true (and it’s not), California in its entirety is only responsible for about .5 percent of CO2 emissions on planet Earth. Yes, California would be the Eighth largest country on the planet if it was not a member of the United States, but it is only responsible for less than 1 percent of total CO2 emissions, which really makes AB 32 and idiots that are now tasked with implementing that law, the California Air Resources Board, completely laughable. That is not the end of the story though, because Schwarzenegger and the idiots he has tasked to implement AB 32, which the Obama Administration would like to see put into place for the entire United States, are doing great damage to the state and if you would like to get some idea of the carnage AB 32 is creating in California already just listen to the below radio broadcasts from the John and Ken Show from January 20, 2010, which you can link to from this webpage: John and Ken KFI on Demand, January 21, 2010:

Yes, California is not only in great danger of going insolvent because of the mismanagement of the state for almost two decades now, these idiots are stepping on the gas as California hurtles towards the ditch.
As for President’s Obama calling for more regulations on the largest banks in our country we applaud that someone in Washington DC is finally stepping forward to address some of the core problems that led to the meltdown of the financial system in the US in 2008. Let’s not forget though that it was Congress and the President that allowed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to go careening out of control which was at least equally responsible for the problems in our financial system. Also, we should not forget the idiocy of current Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke who left monetary policy too loose for too long which led to the real estate bubble which was also a huge part of causing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mack to blow up and allowed the Greedy Bastards on Wall Street to leverage up and create the largest gambling casino in the history of the planet, while ALL of the regulators in Washington DC were asleep at the switch. If you want to know how clueless Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke was while he was creating the real estate bubble in the first part of the last decade, check out YouTube.com:
No, Ben Bernanke should not be reconfirmed as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Instead, he should be replaced with Stanford’s John Taylor – http://siepr.stanford.edu/peopleprofile/113
As usual here at Coaches Hot Seat, there is no one beyond our advice….
Recommendations to President Barack Obama: If you really want to achieve things in your Presidency and get bills passed through the Congress and signed into law that would actually benefit the American People then you need to hire some people to promote your ideas and proposed legislation on Capitol Hill that actually have the ability to get things done. Right now you have a lot of ideologues that we rather doubt could handle the swing-shift at the local 7-Eleven, forget about shepherding large pieces of legislation through the Congress. Secondly, it may be smart to have a driven, wild-eyed, flamethrower running the White House staff, but it does little good to have a driven, wild-eyed, flamethrower spending a lot of time on Capitol Hill sticking his hands into everything and doing little more than pissing a lot of people off. Right now Mr. President, you have a dysfunctional White House staff that is filled with way too many ideologues that care more about being “right” (in their own fantasyland) than about getting important and meaningful legislation passed that will benefit the country and most importantly the American People. It is time for the White House to find some people that actually have a clue to the way the real world works and that means the President needs to get down into the machinery of his White House staff and get rid of the people that do a lot of talking and don’t get things done and either find on the outside or promote from the inside people that as the Great Winston Churchill once defined as:
“It is no use saying, ‘We are doing our best.’ You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.”
Yes, there are a few people here at Coaches Hot Seat that would be more than happy to teach the White House the difference between getting elected to office and actually getting something done once you get into office. Big difference boys and girls, and to this point the entire White House from the President on down have utterly failed to “get things done” and if that doesn’t change soon the country will just swing back to the other political party that proved in the first 6 years of this decade that the only thing is that they are also good at is running the country into ditch while piling up TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF DEBT! Hey, at last something that both political parties are good at! Running the Country into the ditch and piling up TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN DEBT!
Either way, Democrats or Republicans, there is one constant, The American People Lose.
Guess what boys and girls, that reality cannot go on for much longer, because sooner rather than later there will not be Republic for any of you buffoons to continue to run into the ditch.
No, we would not recommend you folks in DC keep pissing off the American People, because the American People when pissed off are a very powerful force that will rise up and bring wholesale change to our country and with wholesale change will come an opening of the books for all that has gone on in Washington for the past few decades. Now come on boys and girls, we know you don’t want that!
Mr. President: Find some people that can actually get things done. Right now you have a bunch of flunkies that talk a big game, but in reality are lucky to know what day of the week it is, forget about them having a hand in changing America for the better! That doesn’t mean pass the bogus and fraudulent health care reform bills that have passed the House and Senate, but pass a health care reform bill and other bills that actually serve the country and benefit the American People, not the monied interests that dominate the Washington scene today.
